Pražský Argument | My fights and analysis
It was a great event!
Thanks to the organizers for throwing it. The 2023 iteration of this event is the reason I went back to tournaments. It is the reason I found a lot new friends since then, so it always has a special place in my heart.
Also great that we were 4 guys attending from germany. 2 more from my club and one from ESK Augsburg. We had a lot of fun and exciting matches.
The rules in short:
Fencing till first touch. Everything after the initial tempo doesn't count.
Deep targets have priority over shallow targets.
Two handed strikes have priority over one handed strikes.

So this is pretty much my opinion on the Hubert. A sword that takes a trade-off some will appreciate a lot and some won't, because we are used to having the center of percussion on the point (which is better). If you are well aware of that and focus on cuts it's not gonna be a problem. If you like to thrust, you will need to adapt to it first. I wish they just filled out that hole in the pommel...

    Actually, I just recently was making adjustments for my HFs for the exact reasons you stated - the index finger base joint being bruised over time due to the protective plates falling backward. I put there a piece of solid leather, which comes 3mm in front of the glove and goes under the plates up to the middle of the hand back and it works wonders. I still think that connecting the plastic plate with the glove via some simple rubber knot may be the best way to solve the issue but this one (and from the videos, I assume your one too) works just fine. Also, my complaint to HFs which you didn't mention (maybe you don't suffer from this issue) is they become quite smooth in time, making it really hard to keep the hold on the sword grip in some full-force situations

    The main issue we had in the club was that the thumb plate would fall off during sparring. It is only held together by one rivet and out of 6 pairs in the club, 3 had this issue. But HF guys were amazing and replaced 2, (the third one was ordered a long time ago, so we didn't ask for a replacement). Their support gets 10/10 from me. I agree with both of your initial issues. For the thumb, I wrapped the whole thumb in tape, immobilizing the articulations. I did this because I had sword tips come up and under the second articulation, which seems like it should be a freak occurrence but happened multiple times. This had the side effect of improving the protection of the tip of the thumb, because now it is braced against the rest of the glove via the tape and can't smash into the front of your thumb, instead of being basically free floating like it is with the articulations. The tradeoff is thumb mobility, which I don't find that I need for fencing. I did this same thing for my Spatha Michael gloves, which had the same issue. For the dye, from the start I have been wearing cotton gloves underneath my gloves, which I did to reduce damage from sweat, which used to eviscerate my spes heavy gloves back in the day. That had the side effect of protecting me from the dye, and I think it is also improving their longevity like I was hoping it would.

    I think that gloves depends on confort more than anything else (when protection wanted is reached), all my club uses clam style gloves and I use five fingers, I got used to them because of the type of techniques and martial arts I did, so I feel sloppy with other gloves, It gives me enough protection and lets me do what I expect from them, not gonna enforce them because overall I know they are the "worst" glove, but it's better for my style and confort. Also they make castañuela noises so I walk like zoidberg which leads to a psychological advantage

I heard the michaels(mitten gloves bought at socal swords) are good gloves too. But haven't had my hands on them. I still like the HFs more than all my other gloves. After a year though I had to make some modifications. They top Spes heavies by a landslide. If you have very broad hands, SG mittens might be better for you. My clubmate gets regular bruising on his index due to the narrow profile, the shell slightly slipping on impact of the glove and missing some padding. As the gloves wear out this starts to get a problem. Which is why I modded them so this doesn't happen anymore. And my hands aren't that broad, so it is not that big a deal for me. • @petritzky

    Sometimes I get these really fast and powerful hits, and I've been trying to replicate them but couldn't figure it out... it's this. I'm parrying across my body, then stepping through just before I uncross. I think my leg movement is driving my hip movement, and then the hip movement pulls the slightly lagged uncrossing and drives the power through in combination with the speed. Thank you so much for this, I'm definitely going to train parrying crossed much more.

      Glad I could help! What can work really well too, is thrusting in a crossed body position(like left Ochs with left leg forward), waiting for the thrust to be displaced and then uncrossing for the umschlagen.

    Congratulations on your results! How did you liked the ruleset?

    • @petritzky

      Overall I liked it more than I disliked it. The judges weren't perfectly on one page on the planches. On some quality was judged on some it wasn't. Some used priority. Some didn't as it was open to the judges. But in the overall scheme of things I think the outcome would be very similar. I personally prefer this over regular after blow rules. Initiative becomes more important. But the judges need to be better trained for this ruleset, than for afterblow rules. Honestly, the most important thing on a tournament are the judges themselves and the ones here were superb. Fast and mostly accurate calls.

      I was 100 percent commited at that point. It twisted my whole body as it twisted in the same direction as the momentum of the oberhaw. I got hit and thought, damn that was dope af.
