  • After I wrote the guys from the Podcast "Schwertgeflüster" that we had a drill to train certain basics, they asked for a video. I thought this could be interesting for some more so here it is on TH-cam.
The drill is supposed to train you to protect your four openings in the most basic way. Even though it is a static parry, it is surprisingly effective and a great backup strategy to rely on. Imo it is necessary for many techniques later in the "Kunst des Fechtens" tradition.

That's a really good way of looking at Indes; as a way to break an established rhythm or pattern (parry/riposte, but also the elaborate distance/time games that more experienced fencers play with each other before blade contact). I think it makes for much better tactical decision making in general.

Excuse me, but what do you mean by "avoid this formal parry"? Why didn't you like this defense?

    • @petritzky

I mainly practice early Lichtenauer and while there are hanging parrys, they mean something different. The vier Hengen are just the guards which are Ochs and Pflug to either side. They cover all our openings, which means we should learn to use all of them to defend ourselves. This is the basis of defense and in the end they open the way to binding and winding which is where the art lies like 3227a tells us.
So learn how to use all 4, not just one of them that barely fits the other openings.
I want people to learn that crossed positions are powerful tools, this form of "hanging" parry gets in the way.
I feel like to many people have seen Skallagrim, or Shadiversity saying: "Basic block bad, deflective parry good."
Which couldn't be further from the truth. The deflective parry throws away the oppurtunity for a thrust for example.

@@petritzky Thanks for the detailed report of your position, it clarified what you had in mind!
As for the hanging guard - personally, as a kendo user in the past, Im still unfortunately cannot refuse it in HEMA sparring))
