Our Journey Begins: A Quick List of Things to Do in Charleston, SC
Perhaps I should have made this Chapter 1of our Big Year series, but as you might come to learn, that trip to Dry Tortugas opened out eyes. We realized the only thing stopping us from starting our travels, was our idea of HOW things had to happen. I am a planner and a visualizer and I struggled a LOT with changing my mind on starting our trip without our Van, but I am glad I did it. This video shows where we went first on our "vans suck" road trip and the fun we had accomplishing a short "To Do" list in Charleston.

Chapter 1: Visiting Dry Tortugas National Park - An Unplanned Adventure

In July 2021 we were stuck with a Van that couldn't work and wanted to start traveling anyway we could, so we took off to Dry Tortugas ad this video shows you that adventure. You'll notice even this...

Unbound Merino Wool is the best Merino Wool clothes. I have bought a few pieces from them. Their quality is very good. Unbound Merino Wool does not scratch and it’s really soft.

I really would like a comparison of the Tripped Travel Gear Packing Cubes which are compression against the plastic compression you used in this video.

Planning for laundry also helps! (So that you only need a few of anything, clothes-wise). And using compression packing cubes can help with squeezing all of the clothes into a carry-on sized bag too!

The two bags are for different purposes... as you've observed, the Osprey Fairview opens like a suitcase and is meant for urban travel where you're pretty much carrying it from airport to public transit to your hostel or hotel, whereas the Gregory Jade is a hiking / backpacking pack, so it's designed to be comfortable for carrying long distances. So - makes sense to consider how long you'll be wearing it when you choose it!

Love the look of the cubes and you can add more to the cubes by using a vacuum bag for the small space lifted over. More clothes with the organization!

Thanks Rose so much for this video. I have spent so long in the last few weeks trying to figure out a RTW ticket using One World just to find out that I also had too many segments. I think it’s maybe a good option if people want to stop 4/5 times across the world but anymore I think it goes beyond the total mileage allowed 😞 I have chosen in the end to just buy one flight into the country and one out and keep booking as I travel for flexibility now!

This video brought back a flood of nostalgic memories. I resided on Marco for some eight years after sailing in and meeting who would later become my cherished life companion. She claimed that she was an original pilgrim who negotiated with the Caloosahachie Indians. Sadly she passed away some 3 1/2 years ago. Mary Neale, R.N. 1952-2020.

No need to roll actually Just zip halfway or three quarter Then press on the bag to release the air inside and gradually zip it up!

If you pack the compression bags by standing them up making sort of a flat bottom, you can fold the clothes to fit standing up right from the bottom of the luggage creating somewhat of a rectangle when you are finished. They will usually stack better and hold more versus packing them flat . I use them all the time. It also can be adjusted to fit the compartment that way. It works for me.😊

You packed SO badly, the clothes need to be NEATLY and tighly rolled into small and medium cubes not shoved in like rags! compression cubes are better than those storage bags! these clothes using your piss poor packing will look like you slept in your clothes! if you knew how to pack then you be able to use cubes properly! what a useless video!

I love my air compression bags - easy to roll and clear so you can see what’s in them. FYI: You could have gotten more air out if you packed clothes flat/stacked, and rolled them on the ground instead of on top of the divider of your suitcase. Need a firm base to push it out! 👍🏼

A not so secret hint on hoods an inexpensive tennis visor or ball cap works wonders . The hoods tend to run larger so that if your climbing ,caving or rolling it will accommodate a “brain bucket “helmet . Having a brim from a hat or visor helps improve the experience , I wear glasses and don’t have a wiper in rain , so keeping the spectacles drop free is key . And I just saw the date you have already travelled , I hope you enjoyed the trip and made some good memories .

Compression bags seems so much better for saving space. Only concern is doesn't the vaccuming process crinkle up your clothes if stored for long enough, especially for formal shirts??

Don’t know if this would work but I think I would do 1 large compression bag for heavier stuff (pants, tops, etc.) then use the smaller cubes for lighter weight clothing and to fill in the gaps. Hopefully that would work and get all clothes in just 1 side of the bag - the other side for shoes, vacuum tool, and misc items. Thanks for sharing!

I used a Gregory Zulu 35 (the male version of Jade) as my only pack for a one month traveling in Europe, so i definitely know how it feels like when you try the Jade. Jade and Zulu are the top professional hiking backpacks, they have all the things that you need when going on a hiking. They reduce the feeling of weights. However, they don't really have good space designs for travel stuffs. But Fairview is designed more for traveling. Especially for flights or long way trips on which you can check it easily and use it as a "suitcase" on your shoulder. So on this point they are not the same kind of backpacks.
