Several Great Reasons to Shoot Film
มุมมอง 437หลายเดือนก่อน
I have taken up shooting film along with digital. I am doing it for fun and it is a nostalgia experience for me as well. I do believe that shooting film can enhance a photographer's skill set, especially a beginner. To that end, I made this video.
Yes the Lumix G9 can meet all my basic needs for photo and video.

I have owned the G9 for 5 years. During the time, Panasonic has upgraded the camera firmware updates making it a significantly better camera (video chops in particular) than when it was first released. So as I look at inventory of digital cameras, is it still possible that the G9 would meet all of my needs for photos and video? In this video I called the screen on the back of the camera "the mi...

Using the Canon RF 24-105 f4-7.1 on the Canon R50
I think this is where I am at the moment. Have shot lots of great pictures with this - love the image quality, video, anamorphic features - the 4k 60p crop is a pain as is the absence of 4k 120. Have used it with the 14-28, I really liked this lens but also got very good results with the kite lenses - 50 and 20-60. I really like this camera - shoots beautiful anamorphic but lacks open gate - no camera is perfect....
I am not as sophisticated of a videographer as you are. I shoot MP4s.
That feels like a really good decision. I am considering purchasing one for the 4k 120 and the size and the bang for the buck especially used. I had the GH4 and the GH5 and didn't really hold on to them because photographically I did not think the IQ was that great. Not sure I would want to be solely reliant on the GH6 especially if I was considering enlarging / printing bigger - potentially the M43 system would show its weaknesses in this area, might be wrong on this though. Basically I really want one but not sure it would be my only camera. Great video by the way - very helpful.
I shoot RAW and process my images in DXO Photolab. DXO takes care of any issues related to grain/artifacts, etc and more. If I want to do a big enlargement, I resize with Topaz AIs Gigapixel. I have made 30x40 enlargements from a16 megapixel GX1 and they look great. The sensor in the GH6 easily meets my needs given my post workflow.
I've been wanting to get into film cameras. What's your take on learning to use a rangefinder styled one versus an SLR? That's the current dilemma I have. As soon as I think I'm going to get an affordable SLR, I see another video talking about how great rangefinders are. So I'm still stuck. I did get a Kodak S1100 XL point and shoot just to dip my toes into the water, and that has been fun, but I'd like to go head first into a proper film camera too
Think about why you want to shoot film and what you would do with film rather than digital. I shoot film because I enjoy using the cameras. I don't care so much about the film look. Using the cameras takes me back to my early days in photography. In that regard, I would definitely give the nod to the SLR. I like an SLR with a great viewfinder for composing and focusing. I also like lenses with really nice dampening. Seeing the image snap in and out of focus and being able to see the BOKEH through the lens are big pluses for me. So if I only had one film camera, it would be an SLR for sure. You have inspired me to do a video on this topic. Keep an eye out for it.
@ great answer and very glad to hear there will be a video on this topic! I’ll stay tuned!
I've started to get more into manual focus lenses and zone (range) focusing. I love the concept and since I end up shooting at night a lot, manual focus would really help for those times when auto focus won't work
If I had to choose between a great manual focus system and a great autofocus system, I would take the manual focus system. That would be my preference because of the way I shoot. It is, however, nice to have both.
Thank you, Look forward to more. I am not into videography but you mentioned one can video in B & W, that made me think. Cheers from Australia.
You are welcome!
Save your money. The EM1.2 and EM1.3 are better.

I habe the 14 42 kit lens , I think standard with camera
That lens is surprisingly good in my experience.
I have one of these, shutter count 1252 , fabulous condition, too good condition that I am scared to use ! LOL. I will probably sell as don't have the photo knowledge the kids don't see to be interested yet (use their phones). I have other options: canon Powershot SX160is takes surprisingly good photos in auto. I find the G6 white balance all wrong in auto. So I need something easier to use. I also shoot with an old iphone SE 2016 lol . The g6 also has a mic port so good for youtube. Thanks for video.
It should be easy to sell on ebay with that shutter count.
@@uncunvenchunalwisdom thank you ... I am going to sell ...
Thanks for the update.
You are welcome.
Apparently, Olympus still has a 5% share in OM systems, I think it might be better if they kept 25% share in the company, but they mostly sold it off the majority of the camera and Len’s division, I think we all missed the trickle down effect of technology that came from the medical and scientific division of Olympus.
New OM-1s are on sale on the OM Systems website for $1,099. That is not a typo. $1100 of msrp.
I love that soft shutter release. You would too if you knew the effect of the camera shake caused by pressing it, especially with such a high pixel density on the sensor.
I hadn't consider that aspect.
I also love that shutter for the same reason
As a new om-1 user, your on point with your takes... definitely earned yourself a new subscriber 👍
Thanks and enjoy the OM-1
Great vid! I own also a GH5 II and some Canons and Fujis, but my everyday camera for photos and videos is the G9. It has just everything I love and need. If I would shoot just videos, maybe I would prefer my GH5II, but the lack of upper screen and the worst ergonomics would make me remember my loved G9 for sure.
For the price, it packs a real punch.
Excellent.
Thanks!
I also grew up with film and have been doing photography as a hobby for about 30 years now. I completely agree that shooting film can make you take better images. Back in the film days, I thought about every shot I took even though it was only for my benefit. Then when I (sort of reluctantly) went over to digital in 2012 I found myself taking more images but of far worse quality, even to the point of me becoming disinterested in photography for a number of years. Recently I have gotten back into it and now I take pictures much like I did in the film era. I take my time to get the image right and find I take less digital photos than when I first started shooting digital, but they are WAY better. I use the Canon EF EOS system as that is what I started with back in the film days and now shoot with EOS DSLRs and a couple of old EOS film bodies. Being able to share lenses (apart from a few EF-S lenses that I use on 1 of my DLSRs) is also handy. I agree that the old manual film cameras are lovely but I'm a bit lazy to use them haha.
That is cool that you have a hybrid digital film system. Enjoy!
I love this video. Im 54yrs, I grew up in Poland where all I could get was Zenit camera, I had to learn the manual shooting. It was easier for me since photography was my father's passion. When I was 19 I lived in Norway where I end up in a world of great cameras and also automatic. Today Im shooting digital and on film. I passed passion to photography on my son and he loves shooting all kinds of film and on all kinds of cameras. Film photography makes your imagination work, how do you want your picture look like etc and as you say it costs money so you have just one shot and you can't check it on the screen but wait until its developed. I shoot on many kinds of film and like 40 yrs old. To me film photography is a kind of art today. Thanks for the videos like yours makes analog photography live. Thank you for this video :)
You are very welcome and thank you for your comments.
No
Glad you have clarity.
Well Olympus does own 10 percent of the company. And the O in OMS does mean Olympus so close enough 😂
😁
I have an Olympus Stylus and love it. I'm thinking of getting either a OM1ii or a Fugi XHSii. I looked at the OM1 but it didn't feel right in my hands - specifically the thumb grip protruded too much and was uncomfortable for my thumb. There are many things I like about the OM1. Two additional changes I would wish for are 1) an aperture ring on the lense (similar to Fugi) and the option for the Quick Menu to display in a scrollable bar list along the right side the screen similar to the Stylus display. That way one can still view the composition while making quick menu changes from the side bar list. I'm not a professional - I think I could be full equipped (for my purposes) with 3 or 4 lenses.
You have a very well defined list of personal preferences. You should be able to find a camera that meets all of these needs. Good Luck!
There is a 9mm F1.7 lens too, super build and weather sealed
Thanks. I wasn't familiar with that lens.
How is the high res mode
To be honest with you, when shooting RAW and processing in DXO Photolab (and sometimes Topaz AI), I haven't ever had the need to use the hi res mode.
So many pearls of wisdom here!
wow...thanks!

View finder works great but looks like an space ship 😡, poor industrial design. I have M6 mark I btw.
It is odd looking.
The 40 -150 f4 pro is currently my favourite lens. So light an compact, but super sharp and actually nice bokeh, when you get some at close up shots.
Also weather sealed :)

Thanks JB. Waiting for my OM1 which is now $1000 off through December.
Incredible. Enjoy.
I just purchased the body OM1 for 1100 was delivered to my house today ,bought it from the manufacturer website. I own many different cameras and great bang for the buck.
Really enjoying your videos. Best wishes from the UK.
Thanks. I do this in spurts. I will have a few more in the near future. FYI, my daughter lives in Manchester with her husband.
I agree 100%! I picked up a nearly new S5 a few months ago for $700. I shoot mostly video (local commercials) and I love the ergonomics of Panasonic cameras. This is the 3rd Lumix camera I've owned in the last 10 years, along with various Canons, Nikons, & Fujis. Paired with a Sigma 28-70 f/2.8, a used S5 is pretty hard to beat for less than $1500. I love the number of programmable buttons on this camera and the dials are well placed. I don't recall having to get into the menu at all on a shoot earlier this week.
Lumix cameras often start out as a better value than Sony, Canon and Nikon. Then they often become an even better value when they release new models. The GH6 is selling on EBAY at times for less than $1,000, which is amazing given it was a $2200 camera. What a value, especially if you are into video. As you noted, the S5 can also be a remarkable full frame value.
As a motorcyclist who "learned" on the street and never rode dirt, I can't emphasize enough how bone-headed, expensive, and deadly dangerous it is to not learn to ride dirt bikes first! Luckily, I learned to shoot photos with film. I don't suppose I'll give up the advantages of digital media, but in some regards I'm sorry they even exist.
I couldn't have said it better myself. There are so many incompetent motorcyclists out there. No need to give up digital to have some fun with film given you can get a good camera with lens for next to nothing. I have purchased Canon T50s with the 50mm FD 1.8 for as little as $30. But you have to be a bit careful and know how to buy them.
The results on 8 x 10 blow me away. Film is still worth it.
I think Ansel Adams would agree with you.
Great suggestion!. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Great series of videos... it is reassuring to know that there are many excellent. , and in many cases, affordable cameras out there to fulfill most of our photography needs. The G9 is my main camera, which I use for photography. The autofocus works excellently when used for photography. I also use DXOPureRaw for processing, which gives me the freedom to use any ISO, as high as I need it. The thing I like the most about this camera is its ergonomics, it is the most confortable camera I have ever used - including digital, or film SLRs... I can use it with a large zoom lens (100.300), handheld, for hours, and the camera stays firmly, and comfortably in my hand... The only issue I have (but it is not with this particular camera, but with any cropped sensor mirrorless camera), is that I prefer to shoot with legacy, manual lenses, and the crop factor pretty much turns most of my prime lenses into a telephoto lens... that is why I am thinking about getting a full frame body, to be able to adapt those legacy glass, and use them as they were optically designed.
Thanks for your comments. I encourage to watch my video on the Lumix S5. It is an excellent match with manual lenses and is full frame. The only downside compared with your G9 is a lower pixel count for the viewfinder. I think it works fine, but it isn't as nice as the G9. DXO is amazing as it Topaz Labs. For those willing to do post processing, the software makes the discussions about sensor size, pixel count, grain and artifacts pretty meaningless. It is unbelievable what I can do with a grainy film image.
Yes, an excellent backup camera. Thanks!
Thank you.
Thanks JB…enjoy this series!
Thank you for your opinion on this lens. I purchased it, and it is well worth the money for video on my R10.
I am glad you are happy with it. In my opinion, it should have been the kit lens for the RF cameras as I believe it would be more useful to more people. On the other hand, it does match up well with the kit lens.
@@uncunvenchunalwisdom I agree with you. 18mm on my R10 equals 28.8mm taking into account that 1.6 crop. With my 10mm, that brings me to 16mm with a wide angle, which as a kit lens it would have been a perfect match. Sadly, I had to spend an extra $500 for the 10-18mm. Well worth it though.
Thanks for the tip! For photography, has your GH6's AF ever bauked significantly, and does it depend on lighting, background, etc? (I'm guessing the most reliable setting is S-AF. I use the center area and re-compose.)
I have noticed a significant difference between lenses. The 12-60 "Leica" seems to perform much better than the Olympus lenses I tried as well as some inexpensive Lumix lenses. I used the GH6 to make almost all of these videos. When I first started I tried the Olympus 25mm 1.8, but it would lose focus rather easily just from my simple body movements. When I switched to the 12-60 that problem ended. Of course, this isn't much of a test of autofocus. I will have to do some testing beyond my ordinary use of the camera to see if I can experience what you are describing.
@@uncunvenchunalwisdom Thanks! It' must be that mysterious incompatibility between MFT systems again! I use Lumix lenses on my Olympus bodies and vice versa.
Thanks 👍🏼
You are welcome.
Yes and no. When it works, it’s a wonderful. But the problem is, it often does not. We are peers but you don’t seem to use your camera for more than stills and static objects. The AF performance alone makes me regret settling on this system. Also in photo mode. It has been a source of ongoing frustration and lost opportunities for years now. The only way to go serious with video using the G9 is to focus manually. The small 20mm f1.7 lens is wonderful as to character and sharpness, but the AF is slow.
Everything you wrote above is correct. Given the choice and my typical subject matter I would prefer a great manual focus camera whether film or mirrorless digital. I would also prefer well dampened manual focus lenses. Just my preference for the way I enjoy photography the most. It is possible, however to have both in one camera. This just isn't that camera.
this camera is awful and grainy
I shoot RAW and process my images with DXO Photo Lab. It has insanely good grain removal. Given that, it really doesn't matter what camera I use as far as grain goes. The grain reduction feature in Topaz labs is also incredible. I can shoot grainy film and remove all the grain if I don't want that look. So it works for me, but may not for you.
@ for photos Topaz isn’t awful But for the price this is madness It is more sensible to dray pictures and write books Thanks for the response. I do use Topas but again that is madness for the prices camera, my iPhone looks nearly the same

I just picked up a lightly used G9 with the PL 12-60 for $850. I love it so far!
The lens is worth that by itself. Nice job.
Nice video. I just picked up this camera used off of eBay for a great price. Took it out today for the first time to get some fall color. Yea.. the shutter is super sensitive.
I have no idea why they mad the shutter that sensitive. I use lots of cameras and when I switch to the G9 there is always an adjustment period.
I'm looking to get the 14-140 lens to start with. Not a wide aperture but has a good reputation. (I have a bunch of m43 lenses but they not weather sealed.). But haven't decided whether this or GX8 (because smaller).
Good luck with your decision.
14-140 not sharp wider than 30mm, the longer end is great Big difference between GX8 and G9, you should know what you use your camera for!
do you have any recomendation for me to upgrade?. My daily use camera is Eos m6 the old one
If you want to use the same lenses, then you may consider the M6 Mark II. If you are going to sell the current kit and you are on a budget, I would consider the R50, which is a great camera for the price (see my related videos). If you move away from Canon and you are on a budget, the Lumix G9 is a great value used.
@@uncunvenchunalwisdom thank you sir, but do you think canon eos rp worth buying. Because a lot of people on internet recomended this a lot
Great video! Thanks. I also like using external viewfinder. I have the Fujifilm 21/28 mm one and the TTartisan 28 mm. I prefer the Fujifilm to the TTartisan for the same reason you described.
Thanks for your feedback.
For micro 4/3 lenses, the field of view of some of the viewfinders is smaller than the FoV of a lens. For example, brightlines on Olympus VF-1 match perfectly with the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens (40mm full frame equivalent), or Lumix 24mm match almost perfectly with the Leica 15mm f/1.7 lens (30mm full frame equivalent). A brilliant combo is Ricoh GV1 with a 21/28mm viewfinder, which I pair with Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 pancake + proprietary DMW GWC1 wide angle converter. This way, it serves both focal lengths with or without a converter. Also Voightlander 15mm viewfinder match perfectly with the 14mm pancake with a Panasonic GFC1 converter.
Very good info. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the video
You're welcome
I'm interested in that .8 lens. Is that correct? If so what is it? Thanks
I don't know what the .8 lens is...
I've got the Canon 32 mm lens and I use it on an M50. It looks absolutely fantastic when I use it so I can only imagine on the M6 it would look even better. By the way I also use a Laoa 9 mm ultra wide no distortion lens and it's fantastic for super wide shots without the Goofy curvature distortion.
glad to hear you have a great setup
