They definitely know what the Betty and the nell are because many in game vehicles have names that allusions of their real counterparts. It's pretty weird that they'd name these two after japanese bombers tho
I went years assuming the devs behind BW were Japanese only to find out that they were British all along. Best game by the Brits I’ve ever played!
Seeing as Betty is basically Battalion Wars’ version of Nell (at least in concept), it would make sense.
The american system had Male names for fighters and had Female names for bombers, and the seem to have been chosen at complete random, but seeing this it seems like this is the lore for the betty bomber and nell bomber

I made this animation in 4 days working on it close to non-stop, had I had more time I may have been able to include more "damage" interaction for the 4. I thought about giving it a "damaged" texture after shots start hitting it, but I didn't have time. Having it pulse red would have been very easy, but I didn't think of it

Yeah they're great. I myself am a big fan of the brass parts and the more N64-ish parts, like at 4:26. The Japanese parts are great too... very atmospheric. I listen to them too when playing other strategy games
