What's the Story Behind the Battle of Ortona Christmas Photo?
On December 25, 1943 troops of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada sat down to a Christmas dinner at the Church of the Santa Maria di Constantinopoli among the brutal fighting of the Battle of Ortona.
There is a photo that is often claimed to be the Seaforths having this dinner but is it really of the dinner? This video looks into the claims and the evidence.

@@OTDMilitaryHistory , When Boris Yeltsin became the new president of Russia, he opened up the archive as a show of good will to the west. What this uncovered was that Stalin was planning a major invasion on western Europe to annex it into the Soviet collective. He was just waiting for the western powers to wear themselves down, just as Hitler suspected. The invasion of the Soviet Union was actually the worlds largest preemptive strike to destroy Moscow and stop the Marxists once an for all. Germany's actions saved western Europe, which is what Hitler was trying to do. The war in the west was brought about by Churchill; not Hitler.

D-day is overly exaggerated butchery. The germans were outnumbered and only killed around 2 thousand troops across the whole thing. Compared to the Easterbn front. This is a an average day of garrison work

All this waste of lives for the misplaced pride of a careerist general officer. Most Ortona vets had nothing but contempt for Vokes and the other incompetents after they realized why and how they ended up in Ortona! History books written by admiring young officers trying to prove themselves won’t tell you about that but all the Ortona veterans I knew sure did when they were alive!

Where was the 12 RBC stationed? Thirty years ago, this pictured was said to depict men of the 12th CAR/Three Rivers Regiment/RTR near Ortona. The 12th RBC museum in Trois-Rivières had a larger version of this picture and you could see that cap badges did look very similar and consistent to the RTR cap badges of WWII. I also remember two 12 CAR Ortona veterans (Charles Prieur & Vern Dowie) that claimed to remember this Christmas dinner at the front. They were frequent attendees at all kinds of events and mess dinners in the 70’s ,80’s and 90’s and I heard the stories several times.

My grandfather was with the Seaforths in Ortona and wrote two letters home to his wife on Christmas Day, which I now have. Here is how he described the dinner: "I have seen a sight today that should be written up in every paper in Canada and the men responsible should get medals. Each company came out in their turn and had Xmas dinner in a church about 500 yds from the Jerries. It was a beautiful place and we had chairs, tables, table cloths and plates. The meal was pork, cauliflower, potatoes, applesauce, Xmas cakes, pudding & coffee. There was nuts, oranges, apples, cigarettes and chocolate bars on the table. The food was cooked behind the altar & the NCOs and officers served it from there. The organ was playing in the loft and some of the boys sang carols. The Sgts and officers each had a bottle of scotch and all the boys had beer. It is the finest thing I’ve ever seen and men who can do things like that can never lose. I’m pretty proud of the outfit and awfully glad that I got the Mortars again. I’m really lucky and I sure appreciate the new colonel giving it to me. Did I tell you that Major Forin had gone down the line? Sid Thompson is now colonel and a damned good one too. I’m going to write two letters darling so this is continued in the next, so long sweet." And here's an article about Wilf, who played the organ that day: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/heritage-minute-occupation-of-netherlands-1.5555463

My father was a medical officer attached to the 1/4KOYLI. About his only war story (told to me while we were watching ITV's The World At War on the TV) was of a Hitler Jugend boy who tried to stab him while he (my father) was dressing the kid's wounds. Apparently the boy had been so badly wounded and so young that the stretcher bearers who brought him in hadn't searched him properly. 'So what happened?" I asked my father. 'Oh' said my father, 'He was very weak and my orderly got the knife off him pretty easily. We finished patching him up as best we could and sent him back to division with the others ( the wounded). We did put a note though to keep an eye on him and that he might be dangerous'. And that was the story. But my father's closing comment was ' He wouldn't have been much older than you are (I was 13 at the time). It's a terrible thing to indoctrinate children like that'. Some years after my father died, I did some research on the history of the 1/4KOYLI and the incident that my Dad described probably happened during the battle for Fontenay-le-Pesnel or Tessel Wood.

The Canadiens took over 45,000 prisoners and there was no order to kill POW's . They were told not to stop and take prisoners if it would delay them taking their objective. In one incident the Germans waved a white flag and when the Canadiens moved up to take prisoners the Germans opened up with machine guns. A well documented incident occurred when the Germans took some Canadians prisoners, interrogated them, then walked them outside one at a time and shot them. In another documented incident Canadians were captured and held in the town square. The Germans machine gunned them then drove tanks over the dead and wounded. The latest research indicates there may well be truth in the story of a Canadian nailed to a barn. Can you blame the Canadians for being pissed off. When the top brass heard about the Christmas peace they ordered the troops to open fire if there was any peace overture.
