Lawn care and gardening tips done my own way. I don't just follow the rest of the herd, I test and experiment with all the theories out there to, hopefully, find the best way to look after my plants. I love finding the most efficient methods to achieve great results without spending a ton of money. I have a great space to test theories and explore different grass/plant types, as well as a number of project lawns that I personally work on and document for everyone to learn from. And, I actually show you their progress! Join me whilst I explore the unknown and question the known!

Mid-winter fert for my Kikuyu lawn, this time using Compo-Expert NovaTec N-Max. This is NOT THE NORM for winter lawn fertilising but I want to see what happens. The lawn is still at a 15mm height of cut, and thatch doesn’t seem to be causing negative effects.

What kind of Kikuyu is this?
Can i get the company if possible that you bought the lawn dressing ?
Newlands garden sands Pretoria East
How are you measuring what you putting down?
Many ways to do this but a good old tuna tin will tell you your precipitation rate. Place a bunch around the yard and see how the different zones are getting water down. Alternatively, if you know your water pressure and flow rate, plus all the variables down to your sprinkler heads, you can calculate an estimate that way too.
Hi BB. Would you perhaps know where in Durban I can get such topsoil for filling up dongas and dips. I have red soil in my yard. Thanks for the video - very informative.
Thanks bud! Unfortunately I don’t know the suppliers in DBN. You could try calling Duzi Turf and check who they might recommend though
Lekker bud. Also bought this... Will be chatting soon!!
🤜
Hi Travis, your videos are amazing like always! I live in Pretoria and looking to rent a verticutter but do not know where. Can you maybe assist. Keep up the awesome videos! 🎉
Thanks Alex. Hanno from Trifecta Garden Services can help you out.
Liquid iron with the PGR limits the yellowing affect
Yip, I think I said it in the vid? I just don’t like using iron without a soil test. Too much results in black layer in the soil. Nitrogen comes and goes so it’s easier to work with until you know your element values in the soil
I remember as a child we used to sit on the grass, each with a man made knife object and removing stuff we did not want from the lawn
Ja the long way that never ends! Using the correct herbicide really cleans things up
A sprayed my grass yesterday and took photos. So I will take photos daily for a month and then make a little video to show the results.
Great
So how deep do you go with verticutter? You mentioned cutting roots to promote grow. Thats deep.
Only as much as 30mm. It’s enough to remove some root density and thatch accumulated under soil level. Promote air circulation etc. I just used it in a newer vid to around 20mm into the ground
@BackyardBushveld cheers mate.
Did you use a product to coat the cut to prevent disease?
No
Bro , how do I soften my hard ground, I have areas that are tight, even if I water, after 2full sun day the area goes back hard
Hey man, It’s a long process, so you’ll need to work at it for a while. Next time you get a good rain, use your garden fork to loosen the soil. Add some good sifted compost or a liquid compost such as guanoboost to keep organics in the soil. The next most important thing is to keep your lawn growing in that soil. You’ll be surprised how important just having roots in the soil is. Keep the grass growing and the soil will transform
@BackyardBushveld i stay in the devils land, it rains around me ,I hardly got a drop, today was worse not a single drop. IL go get the guano again , i used a pick, the soil is like biscuit.
@MotanyaneMathumetse without enough rain, you will have a struggle. But if you work on small sections at a time you will have a better chance! Good luck and keep me updated
Very very good video thanks you like 💯💯👍🤩
Thanks man
Any suggestions on how to treat a dallisgrass problem?
Slowly. Pennant magnum as a pre emergent and pull out all you can see. Roots and all
@@BackyardBushveldThank you, will give it a bash!

I'm using a old screwdriver to loosen up the soil around those "poor man's kikuyu" - but yes damp soil helps a lot.
Perfect! Whatever gets enough of the roots out
Why do you draw the line at glyphosate? I steer clear of it for the most part too but tempted to go around and give the wintergrass in my lawn a quick dab right now :D
It’s just more complicated to have on hand. You can’t share a tank between products, run the risk of killing your surrounding plants with the slightest drift etc. There’s always a selective to control what you have. You can use Lawntyl for your winter grass for example. Even weeds in your paving can be controlled with a selective.
@@BackyardBushveld Thanks for the reply. Makes sense!
When's the next video?
@@jasondejager3089 😂I’ve started recording it. Probably next weekend! Just made a post on social media about it
@ hopefully next week. I’ve been compiling footage over the last 3 weeks and should have what I want by then
When hand pulling Poa annua and such - it does leave holes in the lawn. Once the weeks die , to they leave a hole?
Yes pulling weeds leaves a hole but that’s not the end of the world. Just patch it with some topsoil if it’s distracting. With grasses like kikuyu, it will grow closed in a week or two and you probably won’t even notice the hole thereafter
Thanks so much for your content. I've struggled so much to find any useful info. on LM grass - and you seem to be the most helpful. I don't want to ask for free advice - but is there anything to look out for, with herbicides, for LM grass versus the other more popular grass types in SA - worried that herbicides designed for other types of grass will kill my Berea. I'm in Cape Town if that makes any difference. Thanks again for the very helpful content.
Thanks man, and yes your question is very valid. Not many herbicides have been registered for use on LM or buffalo, but I have used Enviro Super Lawn Weeder on my LM numerous times successfully. You just want to make sure your lawn is already in a good condition and that you apply the lower application rate. The thicker you keep your LM, the better for weed suppression
@@BackyardBushveldmuch appreciated
Thank you for posting these vids, was wondering if this product is working, I am amazed by your results after a week! Dankie mfethu

Watse weergawe van in line applicator bottel het jy gebruik. Want lyk my die een wat ek vir R250 gekry het is boktollie. Dit lyk na Gen1. Natuurlik nie geweet daar is twee nie.
My ander een lek verskriklik baie.
All it showing is grass coming out of dormancy. 1st get your law out of dormancy actively growing, get it under normal conditions AND THEN add a product to see if there is a difference your biased attitude showing in the last two videos.
Vir n klein tuin en gras perk wek die guano boost baie goed uit. Sit dit en die hoseend sprayer or n foliar spray en gelukkig daarmee. Lekker naweek
Hey, enjoying your videos Can you maybe share a lawn care sqedule when to do what throughout the year. When to apply top soil when to furtalize and what products to use and any use full tips to keep the lawn green all year round
Hey Kevin, I actually do have one on my site but I’m about to change that soon. The best tips are to mow consistently, water according to the current conditions, and fertilise with a good nitrogen source. Grass will grow well with those 3 things taken care of.
Looks good what is the difference between Gauno pellets and Bounce back pellets? Ques 2: What is the ideal height for LM Grass?
From what I recall, the bounce back is a chicken manure/gypsum mix, and Guanoboost granular is an earthworm compost byproduct also with a calcium source. Not sure which yet. Similar spec but I’d usually lean towards an earthworm product in most cases. I did enjoy their product called Blade Runner though. Used it many years back. Nice surname btw!
@@BackyardBushveldThx
@johannesvermeulen942 oh and ideal height for LM is between 30&50mm in my opinion. I keep mine at around 30mm these days
Thank you for the 3 part info on this product. I was wondering for a while if I should use this product. Like you say, little time has passed to make an informed decision. How about a short check-in on the front LM within another two weeks time. Would love to see the results given it some time.
It’s my pleasure. I’ll definitely post some pics! I think many will be after the long term results as well
@@BackyardBushveld Thanks, that is appreciated.

Awesome video. Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for. Very informative.
It’s my pleasure! Thanks for watching
Mole crickets love that stuff
Quite literally the opposite bud. Mole crickets are simply the spawn of Satan. If you don’t actively control them, you will have ongoing problems without a doubt! Guanoboost boasts Chitinase which assist in deterring some pests including mole crickets. Of course, infestation is something that requires aggressive intervention. Have a look at my mole crickets videos.
"Last year, I used GuanoBoost and had a massive battle with mole crickets to the point where I scalped my grass. This year, I haven't used any GuanoBoost product on my lawn, and I haven't even seen any mole cricket on my grass. I've been there, got the t-shirt, learned my lesson, won't use it ever again. There are exceptional products available from Grasses and Greens."
I assume you’ve used an insecticide since? The reason I defend them is that your comment is simply not possible by design. You very likely had an infestation at the time of using the product and then changed to something else when either the infestation moved or was minimised somehow(insecticide). As simple as my videos are, I take pride in producing and publishing my videos and social media updates as close to real-time as possible. If this product causes a problem, TH-cam will know about it.
Sprayer needs an “adjustment”. I got two, both were way too slow. Much better after increased the flow rate slightly…
Awesome, what’s the trick? I thought about shortening or changing the diameter of the pipe might be an option
There a little filter at the top of the pipe , hope is SLIGHTLY too small. I adjusted mine and it works great now. Adjust incrementally..
@marcusjoannou7699 will do so thanks
Hole not hope obviously
Hi, looks great this. Where in pta do you get your top dressing?
Thanks man. Newlands Garden Sands
Thanks for all the feedback and interesting videos. Where do you get the handheld spreader?
Thanks so much! I got this cheapie from Checkers
Watching this with immense interest as it seems quite pricey based on their recommended frequency
When I see the results I’m sure it will become clear. If you consider the price of soil conditioners, it’s cheap. If you consider NPK values as a primary concern then it’s expensive. However, if it does what it theoretically can do, then it’s something I’ll take seriously.
Thank you for doing the test for us all to see
It’s my pleasure! Always lekker to try out new stuff
