On June 28th, Canadian Pacific 2816 made an unannounced trip over from Nahant Yard to Railroading Heritage of Midwest America to Silvis, Illinois over Iowa Interstate rails. Leaving the rest of the Final Spike Tour train in Nahant yard, this extraordinarily rare move was one of, if not the only time on 2816's tour that it traveled without the auxiliary tenders or diesel assist. After departing Nahant, 2816 traveled over the BNSF Crescent Bridge to cross the Mississippi. This bridge has weight restrictions, so 2816 took it nice and slow. After coming into Rock Island, the engine proceeded down the BNSF Industrial Track from Rock Island to East Moline before splitting off on to Iowa Interstate rails for the final mile to Silvis. The next day, Railroading Heritage of Midwest America held it's first ever open house at the former Rock Island and NRE shop. It spent the day showing off for the guests, going up and down the two mile test track. Also in Silvis was the Union Pacific DDA40X 6936, operating publicly for the first time in many years. After the event was over, 2816 headed back tender-first to Nahant, but this time taking the Arsenal Bridge and the Iowa Interstate Iowa City Subdivision to Missouri Division Junction before taking the Golden State Route back to CPKC rails at West Davenport. This trip, from Davenport to Rock Island and back over both bridges, makes 2816 one of, if not the only steam locomotive in the modern era to circumnavigate the Quad Cities by rail.
