  • For the first time since 2019, I returned to Mount Pleasant, Iowa to spend the day at annual Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. Old Threshers is an organization dedicated to the preservation of old farming equipment, namely grain threshers, but all kinds of tractors, old cars, and steam machinery can be found there during the annual reunion over Labor Day weekend. However, while all that is fun, what attracts railfans from all over the midwest is the Midwest Central Railroad, the narrow gauge railroad which has a one mile loop of track on the reunion grounds.
MCRR has two operating steam locomotives, Shay #9 and Mogul #6. During the reunion, two trains chase each other around the loop making sure that the action never stops. Unfortunately, #9 had mechanical issues and was not able to run this year. In its place, diesel engines D-9 and 14 took turns pulling one train while #6 pulled the other. #6 also suffered a broken pilot truck spring on the day I was there, and was pulled from service near the end of the day. While #6 was still running, I was able to get a cab ride from the footplate, and I even got to blow the whistle!
Also present but less well known at Old Threshers is the Midwest Electric Railway, a trolley loop that takes guests to and from the large campground. I also took a ride around that in Chicago, Aurora, & Elgin 320. The day ended with a ride in the gondola behind D-9. And before leaving Mount Pleasant, we stopped at the Amtrak station to see a BNSF coal train. Overall an exciting and memorable day spent riding trains and chillin with the homies.
