SP404 MK2 ONLY Beatmaking From Vinyl Samples // Why Have I Never Tried This Before? (Full Workflow)
How can you control the other synths through midi on digitakt on different channels? I have a midi through splitter, it sends the clock and play my synths all at once, but it can't separate them on different channels, it puts all my synths on channel 1 and can't really figure out why i can sequence them individually. Do you have any clue why it puts them all on channel 1? And how to separate them
All great beats, but particularly vibing with the first P-6 beat (“vinyl flip”) - impressive! ❤
Never saw this. I might have to grab one of those and experiment 🤔🙂
Oh look, it's the content I'm here for.
Cheers 🍻
All of these are dope. Really enjoy the drums and overall texture of the SP beat. I really love the harmonies and melodies as well as percussive elements on the Digitakt beat. The lofi sample rate on the P6 gives it a really nice quality. Overall the Digitakt beat takes it for me. I tend to focus mostly on harmony/melody as the aspect of music that speaks to me on an emotional level and that one has it. BoCesque bittersweet sounds. Just got Final Cut pro so I'm hoping to join the ranks of music making video makers at least to some degree. Have a good new year celebration, dawg!
Thanks for the kind words! It's awesome you're getting into Final Cut Pro, that’s what I use as well. I need to take some time and learn some more of its features, it looks like there’s a ton of stuff you can do with it
The SP404's polyphony and clean sound really do stand out! It's amazing how much you can layer without it sounding muddy.
Definitely! Though I’d love to see the P6 per pad filters on SP to clean up mixes even more, hopefully something they can add in an update
Got it! The P6 to me is fantastic to keep idea running while you have limited time, and is also lot of fun. Thanks for your content, keep it on!
That’s definitely how I approach the P-6, a portable idea generator with a really intuitive step sequencer. Then I move that pattern into DAW or SP and expand on it. It’s definitely possible to do full beats on the p6 though, I just find the combo workflow more my style :)
The first beat is so spacey! I like it and the process when you made it on the steam 😎
Cheers and thanks for listening! I think that’s one of my favorites from the year as well. I’m polishing the track up and planning to release it on an album in February :)
I am on the fence buying it because several videos mention the bad quality of the pads when it comes to trigger and velocity sensitivity in particular. How bad are they really? Are they really bad for easy playing like an instrument, which I thought is the point of this synth? I have seen videos and forum posts where they suggest turning off velocity sensitivity by setting the pads to max fixed velocity, which I find it absurd given the concept of this synth.
They are a bit iffy, but I think it's a software problem because it often feels fine. Hopefully gets patched if that's the case. Otherwise I'm in love with mine.
That’s a great question. To be honest, in my synth workflows I almost always turn off velocity, as I like more even arpeggios, chords and leads. I use velocity on stuff like piano, guitar and bass (more of my live instruments). All this to say, I didn’t really think about velocity on here because it’s not something I normally look for on synths per se. I will check it out and cover it in the 1 month review I’m working on though! The pads feel pretty decent to me for performance and I know Polyend updates a lot so if there is an issue hopefully it’s something they can patch :)
There are choke groups, they are called mute groups and sits in the voice menu if i am not wrong
Spot on! I blanked while live but the chat mentioned it and I walked through it at 40:05 :)
Yep! Didn’t make it to end because I am a father too 😅 do you know if there is a way to select a pad without triggering the sound? Can be useful when playing live no?
I totally get that! I haven’t had time to add time stamps due to dad duties. I need to double check if the P6 can do that, the p6 has such limited space I use it more for creating ideas than perform live versions on the SP typically, so I haven’t really needed that. That said, it’s also more to the point of what I was saying in the stream how the sp and p6 both have features it would be nice to have on each. (On the sp you just hold the value knob and select the pad and it triggers silently)
This was super helpful! Is it possible to queue up a third song after the second track in DJ mode?
Glad it helped! You only get 2 track channels, but if you start the second track, you can then queue a third track on channel 1
Hey Sunwarper, thanks so much for another awesome P6 video! I've been using a similar approach with loops from Roland ZenBeats-it has a huge library of phrases, drums, and sounds to choose from. Wishing you and your family a fantastic start to the new year-here’s to all of us continuing to create art with our samples!
Ah that's a great approach as well! It's all about getting inspired to create :) The one thing I've really liked about these session players is how I can go in and actually fine tune every little detail of each chord. I forgot to show it, but you can even turn the player into midi and move it around that way. Happy new year!
Dumb question, but what is the cool red synth you have in your setup here in the video?
Behringer MS-1, it's a sort of clone of a classic roland synth :)
Starts at 2:34 Well that got dusty! Here’s my last beat of 2024. I’m looking forward to making some changes and finally rebuilding my full Dawless setup in 2025. Are you planning any workflow changes in the new year? 🔴 Make the most of the Roland P-6 with the easy to reference Cheat Sheet & Quick Start Guide: www.sunwarper.com/product-page/p-6-beatmaking-cheat-sheet-quick-start-guide
Really appreciate you man. Such a decent teacher.
I appreciate that! Cheers :)
what app are you using on your phone to control the live streaming?
Streamlabs, they have an ios remote. I used to use it in these streams then accidentally muted the instrument audio without realizing it because the UI is so small lol. After that I stopped using it, but I'm considering adding it back in maybe on ipad to have multicam streaming again
Man! Your content is incredible. I’m wondering if you’ve heard of Mk.gee and if so what do you think is going on on his song “Rylee and I” sonically?
Cheers! I haven't heard it, what are you wondering about it?
@Man. How he is getting such ethereal feeling from his synths. What are some likely oscillators. What are the likely frequency response… etc.
@ also bro! CHECK HIM OUT!
Umm this has a 32 voice polyphony I don’t get the point of this video… BAIT lol
Sound generator on SP404 is monophonic. Doing this allows access to sp polyphony on sounds you make with sound generator
Sound gen doesn't have polyphony,MORON lol
Hey, thanks for the video. How can you hear any audio without any cable plugged in the mix out? I'm trying to use my laptop as speakers for the p6 but struggling to do so. Thanks!
I use usb-c to connect it to my computer, then set the input of my daw to p6, so it’s acting as an audio interface, hope that helps!
@ sounds good thank you so much!
@@Charles_Hofmann Cheers! One other thing, you just want to make sure the usb c-c cable outputs the right amount. I have a link to the one I use here: www.sunwarper.com/gear
hi! sorry if my question is very nooby, but when i connect my p6 to my pc, i dont get any sound out my headphones which are connected or my headphones i connected with the Pc. Its driving me nuts!
Do you have the P-6 open in a DAW, if you're using usb-c to connect, you can set the i/o of the DAW to P-6. That should give you sound for sure. LMK :)
Love to see the Doctor in the mix there! 😊
Most sounds in the DAW pay a visit to the good doctor :)
I love mine. Just got it a few days ago.
Congrats, it's an awesome piece of gear! I've got a whole sp tutorials playlist on the channel if you need any tips :)
IT'S A SAMPLIN CHRISTMAS BABAAYY
🎄🎛️
Nice to see! I could see it easily working alongside the Swiss Army knife SP404Mk2!
For sure! You can check out my latest livestream if you want to see how it's already changed my SP404 beatmaking workflow :)
Can you connect a mic to the sp & send the audio from the mic 2 a daw?
Yeah, but only with a 1/4 inch input. The SP input has a setting to switch between mic/instruments as well. The mic audio will get sent into the DAW, but it wont be separate from any other audio coming out of the sp
hey, hello. I want to know if all the shortcuts are included in the cheat sheet. thanks a lot.
Is it possible to make the synth from radio head everything is in its right place right place with this?
Lovely track! I just looked up the synth recipe for it and from what I saw in my quick search it definitely looks doable as it's a square wave, one oscillator patch. I'll try and film a short recreating it in the next few weeks (end of the year is crazy busy but I'll get to it soon)
Hi, I'm new in sampling and this is my very first machine. In addition of the menu diving on the hieroglyphic screen, I must watch English (wich is not my mother tongue, I understand well, except when it's a specific language, and sure it is!) tutorials and reviews... Monkey see monkey do. Thank you, btw, your video helps me a lot! Before getting this machine I had some expectations about what it can do, what I was looking for, and try to anticipate some misunderstanding about what this machine realy is and its limitations. The owner manual is obscure, I never found the official tutorials they said on the website, more or less just one video with a guy pushing buttons and turning pots in quick combinations, and it let me lost as I came.
Cheers! I'm happy to hear the videos help, I have a full playlist of P6 tutorials here if you need any more help with it: th-cam.com/play/PLl2wltiAbqRhG1NeTzy36jnIUgvXyRjHo.html
Awesome man!
Cheers!
Picked up some useful tips, great job on the video and thank you 👍🏻
Glad it helped! 😄
I really like the idea of these 2 together. I don't have the Polyend Synth but I'm currently learning my way around the 404 MK2 as a complete beginner. With the looper function which to be honest I haven't got around to using yet ( I can't really play instruments too well ) I can see this being a good combo to cook up something with my limited skills 😂
It’s a great combo for sound design and performance, with the looper perfect for live jamming and resampling. Add synth’s features like chord packs and the follower setting adds movable arpeggios for idea-building in real time
@sunwarper I really like sound design on a synth. I don't really know what I'm doing as I'm a pretty much a newbie but I enjoy it and usually find creating a sound gives me a bit of inspiration as I'm creating it and an idea for a tune will come into my head. I only have a 404 MK2 at the moment and although it has the sound generator I find needing to use effects seems more difficult to me than ADSR and envelope controls etc on an actual synth unit.
@@sunwarper Yes, the follower function is something that appeals to me.
I'm watching this again, really wanting to get one but I'm going to wait a couple of months. It's my birthday in March so maybe then. It looks like it will do all I need it being essentially 3 synths at once should be more than enough for me and waiting until March gives me a little longer to learn my way around the 404 😂
@@davidmaskew That sounds like a great plan! I'll have a one month review out in january on this, but yeah, the 3 in one synths is incredibly powerful in a small form factor. With the SP it's a crazy combo
How much
it's selling for $500 and can probably get it cheaper on the used market, it's a dope little synth for sure!
I think I love and need this n9w too
Need it
Thank you so much for all the knowledge your putting out on this device
Cheers, hope it helps and more to come :)
This is a sweet tool for LO-FI MAESTROS on a high plain ./ 62 year old shamans dig koala❤🎉😂😊
Nice! Koala is such an awesome piece of gear, having so much power in an app is crazy!
sp404 stereo out + logics new stem split is so genius.... thanks for pointing this out! i hope roland integrates something like overbridge tho
I've been hoping for an overbridge equivalent ever since I saw the mkii had audio over usb. The SP has WAY more tracks than the digi, but even individual bus 1 & 2 stereo outs would be amazing. The SP to logic stem split is dope though, I've released a few tracks using that method already, glad it helps!
the 404 sound is insane.
God every time I get bored of this thing some new update comes out and I take it off my shelf
Nice! I'm glad they keep doing such meaningful updates to it
Do you perform on synths or sequence them with MIDI? Thanks for watching, the music audio from 9:00 to 12:00 (streaming issue-sorry about that!). It’s fixed after 12:00. Check the description for timestamps if you’d like to jump to specific sections. Sample Packs: soundsbysunwarper.bandcamp.com/
Every day I get closer to buying one of these things. I need a sampler in my setup, and it's hard to justify buying other items since this thing just does SO much..its insane.
