Im not sure about no brainer, though it does depend on your other gear and use case(s). While I think the p-6 is dope especially at the cost, for overall uses the SP definitely can do a lot more and has more options in the long run. If you’re looking to just flip samples, do some sound design and then finish tracks in a daw or other hardware, the P-6 is perfect. But if you want a sound generator, a live looper, multiple performance effects, a live performance box, a dj mode and so on, the sp is worth it. If this helps, for me, the p-6 is going to be my portable idea station that I can send samples into, mangle them up, create a pattern idea then elaborate on something else. The SP is my studio Swiss Army knife, that is always at the center of any setup I use.

It’s a sampler, so it can be a drum machine if you put in drum samples, but it can do so much more as well.

I fell totally the same way. I think the worst thing about a machine like this is if you don't use it for a while, you forget almost everything and have to learn it again

The manual is not the best for sure and considering all of the complexities of this machine it's a bit of a shame. As I do for all of my machines, I've been creating a more digestible cheat sheet that has all of the menu names, and quality of life tips laid out for easy reference. That said, it's really easy to get started on and then get to grips with the more intricate features as you go, at least it's been for me.

Right?! There's just so much sound design options in such a little box, it's insane. I'd really like to see them add this sort of stuff per pad to the SP but who knows. I'm still figuring out my content schedule for covering the P-6 but sound design is definitely planned :)

Cheers! That's what I suspected but when I tried to rerecord the automation over it wouldnt take it. All good though, the woes of trying to manage a stream and make a beat at the same time haha worked out in the end

Cheers! What sort of problems have been cropping up for you? I havent tried any sort of midi yet, I meant more just setting the bpm and resampling the individual pad sequences in to then sequence/expand on in the DAW. That's what I've been doing between the P-6 and SP, and intend to try on the DAW as well.

@@sunwarper Yeah, I have the MKII and like the sounds on the old SPs as well. This P6 is perfect for me as I had always wanted to try a Yamaha VSS30. I’ve been experimenting with VSS30-style ambient pads, like Sigur Ros used to do. Here’s my first experiment. All of this is just one single short sample of a couple of Rhodes chords that I morphed. Yeah! That was something new I learned in a previous livestream thanks to the chat. I normally like to stick with "chromatic" since I borrow chords a lot but it turned out to be super useful for this livestream haha

That’s a great gift! The Digitakt is amazing for ambient sampling, I use these same techniques for that as well. The werp can get some very trippy characteristics out of a sample when you repitch it, the. Resampling and using slice to capture small segments can lead to some amazing sounds. How do you use it for ambient?

@@sunwarper It really was the best gift. From a musician friend in a Discord community I'm in, he had ordered the new Digitakt and wanted it to go to someone who would put it to good use. I'm still exploring how to weave it into my creative process, alongside Ableton Live, the SP-404 MkII and Koala Sampler. But finding plenty of inspiration for sure. I might use it for sequencing ambient samples then running the SP-404 MkII alongside it. And/or Koala. I also recently got a Volca Sample, and am exploring that too.

The main sample pads are great, the tiny ones are alright but pretty small. They work well enough and it's decent for $200 given what it can do sound design and sequence wise

@@sunwarperI also don’t understand why videos being made don’t utilize the midi out and connect it to a keyboard or even the SP. The keys are tiny but they include a way out of that using MIDI. Just food for thought. Thanks for the video.

Yeah for sure, we talk about that at the end of the stream. Planning to sequence it with the Digitakt in the future, but that wasn’t the point of this video, more to show a quick start workflow for what is actually a bit of a complex machine. Cheers 😄

I wouldn’t say it’s better, just different. The sequencer is more like the Elektron one so you get a lot of programmability for each step. It’s also got the sample rate features of the old SP’s that are missing on the MKII

That's a dope setup for sure, lot of flexibility with it. I go into a little more detail on the LFOs in my dawless livestreams, but I don't have a full video dedicated to them (yet). I think Braintree56 on yt might in his Digitakt series, there's a ton of great info in that series :)

I just held down the pad I wanted to record to then swiped up to hold it. I cover it in koala tutorials if you want a link.
