Hey Marybeth!! Love your channel. Fellow Canadian here... SW Ontario reaident. Year-round paddle enthusiast as well.. winter paddling was a new addition last year, but I'm looking for where i might paddle when my bay freezes over..and theres no open water.
Thanks for subscribing and the kind words! Welcome to winter paddling ❄️🙌🏼 Assuming you have full winter gear? Lots of spots on the Great Lakes but you really have to know the area and watch for calm days. Typically water is open because of the winter winds that create waves. Hamilton and Burlington Beach and The Beaches (Toronto) are good options on calm days. There will also be open water sections on Lake Huron and Lake Erie. Avoid walking on ice mounds to get to open water. These can collapse and then you're trapped and can't climb out; super dangerous. Anywhere people surf is usually a good indicator that the water and entrance will be open to paddle on still days.
Happy new adventures in 2025🎉
Happy new year to you too! To many more adventures this year 😄
too bad, the lake near me froze over completely when temperature dropped below 0 degrees
This is Lake Ontario so it mostly stays open during the winter due to the size and winds making still winter paddles even more special because they are few and far between. ❄️🥰
Honest question here :::::: what do you do for Protection from bears ,you must have to have something ?
Great question! In Ontario you only have to worry about black bears and not grizzlies. For the most part they will likely bolt as soon as they see you but you can surprise them so it's good to make noise by talking or using a bear bell/whistle. Keep dogs on leashes and be aware of any bear evidence. Bear spray is also a good tool to have on you and know how to use. When camping, always bear proof your food and scented items.
Oh dear, when I hear Florida I must think about Alligators. These are the animals which I am most afraid of, straight followed up by sharks. Too much Adventure for me. Whish you a great New year. Greetings from Germany.
It's super rare to see gators in salt and brackish water which is were this video is from. And if you do see them in fresh water they mind their own business if you give them space and aren't a fed gator. Like anything there are always risk in life and out in nature but gator and shark attacks are extremely low. You're more likely to get injured (or worse) in a car accident to and from your adventure. Happy new year to you as well! 🎉
Good times! Happy advenchas in 2025!
Happy new year to you too! To many more paddle advenchas and sharing your passion! 🙌🏼
Incredible recap. I feel like just knowing you exist as a human on this earth gives me hope! Thanks for the stoke! Cheers to 2025 Advenchas!🎉
Aww. Thanks so much! What a wonderful comment to get! Looking forward to seeing you on some 2025 advenchas!!
And next the person can do a flip rescue for you! Rinse and repeat.
lol although flip rescues can be fun to practice they are for emergencies and situations to help someone who is struggling. It’s not a technique to get back on your board in normal circumstances. I have videos for that too 😉
Great Video Guys!!!
Thanks so much!
I thought you couldn’t get into Mono Lake. Thanks for sharing!
It’s an other worldly paddle! Fully recommend this unique spot!
😁
🩵❄️
LOL!! 🤣
😆❄️🙌🏼
Do you use a latex suit?
Yup! My drysuit has latex neck and wrist gaskets with fully sealed feet.
@ I am allergic to latex and wonder how the other version would work. Would I have to find a way to jump to the paddle board without getting on the water at all? I know you have a detailed video on your latex set up, but was wondering if you have experience on non-latex drysuit.
@ I personally don’t have experience with non latex gaskets but there are semi dry suits that have cuffs made of neoprene. These would work great for flat water paddle boarding since you aren’t fully submerging on purpose. Just know that if you do fall in they will slowly start to leak but should give you enough time and warmth to safely paddle back to shore. I’d still recommend getting a suit with built in socks so the only openings with cuffs are your wrists and neck.
@ yes, that’s what I need. Thank you!
I think the Grinch would LOVE winter paddling 😂😂
😆 fully agree to this!
My People!!!!! Yes, Winter Paddle Sister!!
The best! I assume you winter paddle too? Where do you go?
Nice
Lake Superior swims are the best!
Such a great video! Thank you! I'm wondering about the 5/4 wetsuit, I don't have enough money right now to afford more than one wetsuit, so I'm wondering how warm of weather I can push that suit? Online only shows the lower bounds water temperature. Thanks!! Your videos are great!
I hear you on the cost of gear! I think that will depend on personal preference, the outside weather (sunny and warm vs cool and cloudy) and how much paddling your doing to create body heat. Plus of course the temperature of the water in the fall and spring where you're paddling. I've used my full drysuit a few times in the summer months on the Great Lakes in colder areas. You'll likely be too warm in the late spring and early fall and might miss a month or two of paddling. I'd recommend visiting your local paddling/surf shop to try some suits on and ask them for advice too. Sorry that's not a clear answer but I hope it helps a little!
@@PaddleAdventurer No you've been super helpful and your videos are great! I'm going through them!! I was just wondering realistically what's the upper air temp for paddleboarding in your 5/4 suit, just so I can judge the length of my season. Can't find that info anywhere!
This is SUCH a good video!! I've always avoided winter paddling, but I'm starting to reconsider. I LOVE that hooded roxy wetsuit and I feel I could get more use out of it? Could I use that suit on days when the air temp is very warm but the water is still cold (like spring?)?
Thank you for the kind words; I'm glad you found it helpful! Check out my latest video as it talks about getting started for cold weather paddling. th-cam.com/video/U_hqiqWEkDs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9i7Q-FGXF0mm3QVV Wetsuits are much less expensive than drysuits; you can also use them in the winter time but you might find them chilly when wet and out paddling above the water. To help with this you could also get a paddling jacket or wear a shell over top. Just make sure your PFD fits over everything and it's not too bulky. If you surf or do other in water activities a wetsuit is a good combo. A disadvantage to wetsuits are you need different ones for different seasons as the thickness determines the warmth. You don't want to over heat or be cold. Absolutely, wetsuits are great for spring and fall paddles!
Great tips and advice!
I'm glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Winter landscapes are like a whole new world 😍
They really are! Thanks for eyes in the sky; such a cool perspective with the ice!
R u from the soo?
I'm not but I love visiting! Beautiful area.
Oh I know a good one... Waterproof/floatable Two way radios by Midland, Cobra, or Motorola. Great for safety and wonderful when you head out in groups and your able to talk if (intentionally or unintentionally) separated enough that sometimes wind noise, waves, boat noise, music makes it hard to hear one another. With these, the phone can stay in the dry bag or box and not risk dropping in the water. Merry Christmas and happy holidays Marybeth!!
Great suggestion! 👏🏼🎁 I'll have to look into these. Do you own any of those models?
All good stuff!!!!!
Absolutely! Happy holidays ❄️🎁
This is a great video for newbies like me, thank you!
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching. Happy paddling!
Great ideas!
Thanks! 🙌🏼🎁
Why not judt jump into the middle of the board and reach for the other side then slide into position again
🤔 I'm not sure I understand what you mean. If you mean dragging someone back onto their board vs flipping it, this would be extremely challenging especially if its an adult or they have a vest PFD on.
@PaddleAdventurer so basically align yourself with the middle of the board after you have fallen into the water then reach for the other side of the paddle board and pull yourself up (sliding on your belly/vest), this is what I do when I fall in
@ ah yes of course! I have videos on different ways to get back on a paddle board solo. Flip rescues are used in emergencies or situations where the person might be exhausted, conditions have changed etc. It’s for when someone who needs help, not a technique for getting back on your own board.
@@PaddleAdventurer oh I see my bad
Good tips! But where is the on board ice cream machine, I wonder? 🙂 #essentialsfirst
Thank you! 😆🍦 I'd like to know the same thing! But that might need to be on the above $100 list.
@@PaddleAdventurer Ah, you're right. It's a critical piece of equipment, but not necessarily budget-friendly.
@@AirOnTheWater Critical indeed!
Thanks so much for educating me. The sport of Paddle boarding is becoming more popular. The knowledge you shared will make my paddle boarding experience safer.😊
I'm glad it was helpful! Happy paddling!
I did something wrong... bought almost everything on this list myself 🤣🤣 (and yes, now I'm broke, LOL!) Sooooo... on my wishlist is... a rich husband 🤪

5:30 irockers battery is awful if you want a separate battery spend the money on a large power bank instead
Thanks for the advice! I still haven’t tried their external battery but would say that buying a pump with an internal battery is the way to go. One of my next videos is testing 6 battery powered pumps 🔋⚡️ What power bank do you use with the iRocker pump?
Thats actually a good list! A small cooler bag or box is also a great on a longer hot summer day. Or more d rings and glue to add more strapping points to the board. Great video as always
I'm glad you like it! A small cooler bag and D rings and glue are also great budget friendly gifts! Thanks for the suggestions. 👏🏼🎁
nice list thanks
Thanks for watching! Another video coming later this week on top 10 gifts above $100. 🎁
Thanks very much. I miss sup so much. In Germany it's wintertime. I Don't have a dry suite. Must wait until I reach my target weight, because the suites are much expensive and I've got a lot weight to lose. But it's ok. It works, I just have to be patient. Actually I'm focussing on my mindset. Hard Job, but it's worth it. This time I will make it. I"ve been ill for about 4 weeks, just sleeping, eating and doing my Job. No sports. (I love my job). Now it's getting better. Next week gym is waiting for me. I love watching you sup in this wonderful Environment. Go on. Greatings from Germany. Susi 😊
Thanks for watching, Susi! I hope you feel better soon and are able to focus on your health and well being. When you're ready, keep an eye out for dry suit sales!
🤔🎁What’s on your wishlist?
L'il Suckers are so good!
They work so well and are small and easy to travel!
Super fun
I’m really hoping for a cold and snowy winter! ❄️ 🩵
What a lovely video! I loved your enthusiasm and your adorable beaver hat-it made the whole adventure even better. I’m so excited because I just got my first paddle board, and seeing your morning paddle has me even more eager to get out there. Thanks for sharing this beautiful place and taking us along!
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! Excited for you 🤙🏼 Do you have a spot you want to check out first?
Thanks for asking. I’m going to take it out wherever/whenever I can around home, but I got the board in anticipation for a roadtrip from Idaho thru Canada and to Alaska this summer. I’m researching places to paddleboard and camp along my route pretty much daily now.
@@melissae7445 wow that sounds like an epic adventure! Plus having a paddle board will be perfect the a road trip. How long is your trip going to be?
Alligators, oh hell no!
🤣 Have you seen my Silver Springs video?
Another great kayaking video! Thanks Marybeth! 🙂
Thanks for always watching! Keep an eye out for another sea kayaking adventure video in the coming months!
In mille ils quebec they have outhouses and picnic tables and docs on a bunch of islands.
Awesome! Is that crown land, city owned or a Provincial park? Can you camp there too?
@PaddleAdventurer not sure but the Quebec rule of thumb is do what you want. There are no laws
@ 😂 I can see that! Quebec likes to have fun!
Nice! Looks like quite a place to be paddling 😎 For me, the most unique place would probably be in the Gulf of Aden outside Djibouti, Africa, not because of the waters themselves so much (even if there are some interesting tidal differences and wading through shallow water to get out), but rather being surrounded by sea turtles, having a ray swim under the kayak, and in the distance, what looked like seals swimming by, which is really unique as they're not supposed to be present for thousands of kms (but one was found in the harbor the week prior).
It was an experience! Paddling with ocean life is incredible. Sounds like you had an epic paddled filled with critters!
@@PaddleAdventurer Kind of was. The lack of manatees here, which you do paddle with, is appaling though (although we have plenty of beavers that will splash around the paddlecraft...)
@ 😂 ‘lack of manatees’ They are pretty magical to see in Florida! But beavers are pretty awesome too 🦫🙌🏼
@@PaddleAdventurer 🙂 We could trade you some reindeer from here maybe for a couple of manatees.
Done! 🫱🏼🫲🏻
Glug, glug, glug is the sound my phones makes sinking to the bottom of lake erie. 😢
lol well I wouldn’t recommend pulling your phone out if it’s not secure or has a floaty on it. When you see two yellow straps in some of my videos that’s my phone float 🛟🙌🏼
I would be scared to paddle board with those rapids.
A lot of folks sit down or just float through them. They aren’t too wild!
@@PaddleAdventurer You mean I would be less likely to not fall out if I sit down instead of standing up?
@ yup! You’re more stable sitting down or kneeling. I’d also recommend a river fin and a quick release belt.
Thanks for the information. I hope they have that at the place I can rent paddle boards next year.
@ Do you own a paddle board? I know Grand River Rafting rents but canoes and kayaks.
Which shore is this exactly ?
This is the north shore in Lake Superior Provincial Park 🇨🇦
Such a great video! Entertaining and informative!!!
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
It would be deep
Oh yeah; 384 metres!
Great information and fun video!
Thanks! I’m glad it was helpful and fun. New pump video coming soon. All battery powered pumps! 🔋
I've seen all the great lakes but Superior is by far the most beautiful. I once drove around the whole northern shore of Lake Superior in fall when the leaves were at peak color. I've driven to Alaska and back twice and I've been all over the United States and Canada and Lake Superior is as good as it gets!
What an endorsement. I fully agree that Lake Superior is special! I was also there this fall and the colours were spectacular!
Yes the drive from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie is truly stunning during some segments.
