We have left our jobs and rented our house to travel and make memories with our kids before before they reach high-school age... we plan to be on the road as long as we can, exploring around New Zealand 🇳🇿 in our Caravan... we plan to show the highs and the lows of full time family life on the Road... our 3 kids are Jade, Riley and Toby and we are Sophie and Mike.
Camping in WILD and empty places. Akitio
Hey everyone, we have a great video for you this week. Adventuring out at remote settlement called Akitio. 30 permanant residents, a beautiful beach and reef.
So good even the Southern lights turned on for us in the North Island. Was a great spot for us to be by ourselves for a bit after weeks of being in other peoples spaces.
We also day tripped out to Waihi falls a pretty large waterfall which we had all to ourselves, looks like this whole area stays pretty quiet all year round.

Hey everyone, this episode, we're towing from Rotorua to the Hawkes Bay over the Napier Taupo road, with it's large rolling hills. We spend a couple of days at the Nzmca part, a couple of days freedom camping at the eroding Clifton freedom camp and then we're back on the tarmac, staying with family. Napier is where I grew up. I love it here, the weathers generally good, there's lots to do, and ...

Hey everyone welcome back. After saying i was gonna do a 5 tips series it's time I got back to do at least another after all the vlogs I've done. Towing a big caravan around can be pretty intimidating, and after having some issues early on for us, I thought it would be helpful to put these 5 towing tips together of things I've learnt and whats helpped me when we know we are going over big hills...

Hey everyone, the past 2 weeks have been interesting and definitely not our favourite weeks in the caravan. I wasn't even going to make this episode, because I just didn't know if I wanted to make a video that seemed so unenjoyable or lifeless compared to Normal. I think it's fun though to watch some of the boring bits I guess it's something different. I hope you enjoy our Messy 2 weeks as we r...

Hey everyone welcome to central Northland. Kaikohe, a small town that generally a lot of people do not go to. But the A P show grounds offer a cheap option for camping with full facilities which is always nice. Should have stopped in Wairoa and grabbed some bait from the petrol station, MY home where you are, Lake Waikaremoana is awesome as well
Beautiful spot, nice drive out as well, lived out at Maharahara for year's, used to go out there now and then, awesome
It's a bloody good spot alright, I imagine it's pretty busy over summer, but the off season is so quiet n peaceful
I love what you are experiencing as a family, you’ve got guts to show your kids what life is about! I’m following!
Oh thanks so much... I don't think people realise how hard it was to walk away from our home, jobs, friends to do this, no regrets though
Thanks bro good to see unspoiled kids
entitled kids are so draining... We appreciate our kids, showed them the way we wanted them to go while they were in Nappies, makes it easier when their older.
Keeping it real thanks kiwis
thats the one, living it like the rest of us would bro. kids are keen as on their bombs.
Kia ora, nice video. Thanks for showing us around our Ataahua country ❤🇳🇿
Oh we loved being in the area, thanks for watching, hope we did this spot some justice, it's beautiful.
I found a article about you on Facebook tonight and now here I am, scrolling all your videos 😁
we've had a bunch of new people jump on board our journeys which is great, enjoy our travels, tomorrow we're sailing to the South Island for a bunch of winter adventures, hoping to get in the snow and ice.
Spent all my working life there. Glad you liked it as much as I did
It's a lovely spot, to far from the main road to get most people there, I just loved the place.
Love the swing bridges. Highlight of the tramps
it's a mixed bag in our family. Hokitikia bridges are pretty big and wide though.
Thanks for another fantastic vid.
Your so welcome, thanks for watching.
AWESOME to read about you guys in the NZHERALD today. living life on purpose. :)
Awww thanks mate, yes some very intentional plans were laid, loving the life style
Driven all those roads in a 8 wheeler truck towing a 3 axle trailer. No problem.
The roads mostly flat, easy driving
Can I please ask, when towing on the highway, are you staying in 5th, rather than 6th? Or even as low as 4th? Buying a manual N80 Hilux this week to tow a van for the family.
You can definitely ask. Pretty much in 4th gear 90kms an hr reeves are sitting just over 2,000rpm I'll go 5th gear on a 2lane expressway that's flat and straight but 4th feels much better
@@leopardsgowild Thanks heaps.
I lived nearby to the shipyard, its a beautiful place and I still miss it. Southland is a great place... And it's food 😅
yea I think it's pretty underrated, although haven't been there in winter... Whats that like?
Battered
yip, good battered... Feels like it's time to get some fresh fish actually.
@@leopardsgowild about 40 years ago my dad and his mate worked at the piecart in gore which was towed by a tractor, still remember even as a kid, beautiful battered blue cod and big chips
@@vaughantutty2227 small towns don't go wrong aye, everyone knows everyone, can't afford a bad feed at the fish n chip shop, the whole town would know in a week... Growing up in napier we all knew the best spots to go for a good feed.
New Zealand is cold, wet and dark.
Well the West Coast is... typically, they do have their good spells of weather... east Coast has most sunshine.
I went past your camper when I was out there I walked past your son with my dog
Oh thats cool you'll be very familiar with the area then, what a spot to have close to home? or do you visit from afar?
Finally have gotten back on track for the last 2 weeks of our South island trip. Checking out Nelson 😁
You guys been rewatching a few episodes to get back up to date aye... I'm slipping behind in my editing again with a sick Toby and work i'm doing... Yikes.
Yes, we know that if your van can go somewhere, ours will 😅. Although obviously Rob's fitness means we can't manage to do alot of the amazing walks... So we get to go virtually with you Guys. 🥰
Love your video! Me and my wife will sell up our house and get 6 berth caravan 20ft or more. Will be living permanently and travel NZ!
oh thats great guys, sound like you have a great adventure coming up, are you planning to come from somewhere else in the world?
You play the best music on your blogs!@
Thanks mate I pick the music I like 😂
Another great video. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
thanks mate, appreciate the feed back always. have a good weekend.
Great video, Mike boy, those lights were just insane.
thanks mate, yea was such an impressive night sky, I so hope we get another big one like that while we are down south. Those colours were unreal.
Another cool as video as usual ' capturing the aurora like you did was primo ! Cheers Mike and team , looking forward to the next episode
thanks heaps mate, always love videoing nature in all her glory, flippin awesome display. See ya in the next one.
N it is pronounced ack e tio
hmmm i'm not sure on your sounds here, but I've def been corrected with the wrong pronunciation before, I heard a lot of people refer to it as Ak-A-te -a or even Ack-a-tee, I might not have had it quite right, but I hadn't heard anyone say it properly to go off, #trying my best.
That is the English mis-pronunciation. Leopardsgowild’s version is much closer.
@@tutekohe1361 Kia Ora...
Yeah I'm from Dannevirke too and we always said it like ack e teo
@@offgridRockets most people say it that way, it's not Maori pronunciation though which I'm working on.
Beautiful place im from dannevirke it is the locals cupboard for kai.
it's a great reef with plenty of life in it. Pity the sea was a bit rough when we were out here.
Love this video! Looks like great place to visit
yea it's beautiful, some people prefer places with facilities, but we are pretty self sufficent, we loved being out here almost alone, was great.
Hey guys random question, how did you find going over the Auckland harbour bridge?or did you go around
It's fine, road feels a little bit narrow but I just stay in my lane and don't look at the mirrors to often because passing cars feel really close. Definitely harder stretches of road
@@leopardsgowild yeah we planning a trip to Auckland and we just wondering what to do it'll be our second trip with the caravan so might go round.thanks again guys .
Another great video Mike. And a great spot. I`ve only been out there the once but loved the place, so far away but close enough. I used the camp ground They were great people Hope you are enjoying Otaki this weekend Take care and safe travels
Thanks heaps Neville we really enjoyed this area so out the way just driving out there is really cool... otakis been fun, with another family, the wind is pumping though
We were at The Waihi falls on 18th last month. At certain times, after lots of rain, water pours over the full width of the cliff. It's a great spot.
Been a few photos on our Facebook post of the falls in flood, super impressive.
Did changing the thumbnails help the channel? I hope they did
maybe a little bit... I had a really helpful email from some people in the USA who gave some good examples and tips, which I've tried to do. Sometimes I don't quite have the right image or I don't want to make the title so click baity, trying to stay organic.
OK, so now I have another place on my list that we need to visit. 🙂 We haven't finished this trip yet.
Oh good stuff, We plan to add many more spots for your list in the coming months.
You're the man Mike, cooking seems like a way to relax for you? That's a nice spot, made special by the Aurora.
I do find cooking quite therapeutic, and it's always a bit of an adventure seeing how it will turn out. that Aurora was a very cool display, did you guys see it?
@leopardsgowild I'm the same with cooking, freestyle all the way. Yes we took to the Port Hills to see the Aurora
We got snowed in there too. It was amazing!!!
its actually a really good spot to get snowed it because it's 800m above sea level, We were glad we were able to drive out later that day though, the snow turned to slush pretty quick
Definitely worth taking a side road or two.
yea mate, I spend quite a bit of time on google maps looking for random places to go, or places that might be good for fishing.
Thank you.. glad to see you on the road again.
so good to be going on an adventure. looking forward to the South island again in just over a week.
Loving your videos! Giving me all sorts of ideas! Awesome, thank you!
there are so many great spots to go and explore.
That meal looked amazing... I'm well jealous that you cook Mike, I have a non-cooking partner. I also saw that short you put up about the Art Deco festival. We were there and stayed on the waterfront with other NZMCA campers and also at Clifton Beach - I wish we'd run into you for a chat! Enjoy your new adventures.
Napier is always a pretty busy time for us, cause it's home, so we have lots of visits to do. it's always great being there for Art deco weekend, although this year was so much busier than I have ever seen it, so much fun.
Yumm looking dinner 🍽 😋 😍
We always eat yum food lol... I need to go on a diet.
Nice one Red Dragon - and that looks so peaceful there a nice place to relax in
yes it's such a great spot, Loved exploring around the area, sea was pretty rough though, but how cool was the reef.
Amazing underwater footage, great shots of the octopus 🐙
The octopus was such a cool find, go the kids, I'm glad the kids are brave enough to pick it up.
Epic everything Mike!!! The kids r so awesome, soph is hilarious, you really are great at making these vids... thank u guys for all you do,, somedays I get lonely out here but your vids always cheer me up.. ✌️🤙❤️ have a great day Leopards
Thanks Cam, i'm glad we bring some joy to your life.... soph really is a comedian, she's never overly keen to be on the camera, but when we meet people who follow us, she's always having a long chat with fellow campers.
What a cool spot! So close to home for us we will have to go take a look! Thanks for sharing!
yea mate, it's on your back yard, but not... Close but a bit of a drive out to the coast... Hows' your guys travel plans looking? When do you finally hit the road?
@@leopardsgowild yeah big weekend moving everything into the shed so we will have to hit the road soon after that maybe this Wednesday! Just saw your Whakaipo bay clip looks cool that might be our first stop. 😁
Mike, what an awesome effort in the kitchen. We have now added Akitio to our list to visit this month. We were at Otaki Beach for the Aurora - man it was amazing. Keep the videos coming.
Did you see the Aurora from Otaki, thats where we currently are.. Akitio is a pretty awesome spot, hope you enjoy it like we did.
@@leopardsgowild - I hope you have a nice day or two there. Shame we missed you. But I'm sure we will be star struck when we do meet your family on the road! I'll post a few pics on the Living on the Road Facebook page for you. I gather you have a booking for the ferry soon?
@MaureenKeene-ix3ic yes ferry booked for a week's time... don't be to Star struck, we're pretty ordinary lol... definitely enjoyed Otaki
Can't wait to see where you head to! Repeat visits and new places. Safe travels
I managed to see my first ever aurora that night. With the eye and captured my first photos too. It was amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Oh well done, it's a bucketlist opportunity really. The Aurora is so magical, I'm grateful for technology that alerts us to these things, otherwise I'd probably would have been in the caravan editing a video and would have missed the whole thing.
@@leopardsgowild same thats how i know. We have a westcoast one and then aurora australis one. I saw mine close to Kumara at Kapitea resevoir with reflection on the water. Magical. Had a photo printed in the locoal paper too. So feel famous!
ha ha so famous... We made it on to newshub on the 6pm news so I know how you feel lol.
@@leopardsgowild well done!
When there’s been a bit of rain, the entire rock face of Waihi Falls is a thundering torrent. Nice to see Akitio from a different perspective, haven’t been out there since the cyclone.
Oh we were talking about how those falls must pump in the rain, a clear water line on the river bed there of when it's running high. Akitio is a pretty awesome spot.
Love it!! Akitio and Waihi falls are two of the many reasons I moved to Pongaroa:)
Oh it's such a lovely spot... I reckon I could easily live in the area... Peaceful and quiet... Hows the wind in the spring time there?
The wind is ‘REAL’!!! I lived in a 6x3 cabin the first spring I was here and survived.. it’s not for the faint hearted.. but like all things, is temporary and the mostly beautiful calm days more than make up for it
Riley's going to make a great little housewife one day 😄
ha ha, she sure will...
Woohoo! I've been there - over 60 years ago! We had a farm out of Dannevirke so Akitio was 'our beach'. I'm sure visits were rare but I remember Dad and my uncle fishing and crayfishing while Mum and I enjoyed the beach. Your aurora time lapse was stunning. Thanks for this lovely video of a special and secret place.
Oh wow over 60 years ago, the place prob didn't have any holiday homes then... It's such a lovely place, would be worth while having a place out there.
that's not drift wood. ...it's all the slash that has made its way there......at least you got plenty of firewood
yea the beach is covered in wood from cyclone gabriel, apparently the reef was covered in silt until mid summer when it finally cleared itself out after months of weather... I wonder if it's a good protection from erosion, letting it sit there and break the waves.
@@leopardsgowild I was thinking you and Toby could put down a hangi everything you need is there maybe not the rocks although you can use some iron from some where ....but this video is a couple of weeks old so you would be in a different location ....cheers anyway

Good to see those subscribers ticking up; you should put your fridge magnets on the fridges in Top 10 kitchens ;-) Thanks for showing us this place; not too far from Kāpiti for me, so it's going on my bulging Leopards List!
Yea the subs are a constant uphill grind, thanks youtube... top 10's we've never been to, they are so expensive, over $100 a night for us to park our caravan there, we like the little isolated camp sites, if we're paying we just like some power, and our main preference is unmetered showers lol... We love having nice long, hot showers.
@@leopardsgowild Yep, I know you don't stay there; I've been following you guys from Day 1. My point is there are loads of travellers going through those places who don't realise all of the other, better, more remote places to stay, so they'd really benefit from your videos. And there's no harm in you popping in and whacking a magnet on their fridges while you're passing through?
