The File Explorer Replacement - The Files App for Windows!
The Windows File Explorer, it's been around for a while with very little change over the years. So in this video, I'll show you an alternative to the file explorer that you might want to consider. The "Files" application. This is an open source application that attempts to modernise the Windows 11 File explorer while providing features that should of been added into the File Explorer by default. I'll be going over some of the applications key features, comparing it to the default file explorer and finally I'll go over some of the things that you should consider before switching to it for yourself. Either way, I'm sure you'll appreciate some of the features that this application brings to the table.

cpu and ram eater tbh.
Good but the thumbnail is super slow, uninstalled
Can you make a video on Zen Browser Customization ?
Wow bro This video is really useful for me Thanks
Very interesting video, I used the file when Windows 10 was about to update to 11, and I stopped using it after it got bugged... but these new functions are really cool, maybe I'll test it, I thought it was really cool
Try Zen
The browser is such a subjective app. For example as a power user I prefer Vivaldi
how can someone reach the window from minute 1:32?
I'm devoted to Directory Opus
I will definitely do a video on it at some point, thanks for the comment👍
🐧 laughing in the corner
XD
You didn't mention "Screen reader" a many other useful tools
Wrong, almost all browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, etc.) are based on Chromium (not Chrome). Chromium is an open-source project (driven by Google, and also serves as the foundation for Chrome browser).
Use MacOS finder with all of this features without the limitations :)
PowerToys is an official Windows tool, meaning its features are designed for Windows. Unfortunately, its 'spaghetti source code' is such a mess that they were never able to integrate these features, which could truly take Windows productivity to another level
Nice content
File Explorer and fast? Good joke. It takes ages to generate thumbnails in photo or videos folder xD
Yh that is annoying to be fair especially with other file types like HEIC and HEVC and other file types that windows has to render I believe. Just when compared to the Files app does FE seem fast
Mad that you have to download and install third party software from a website to stop your operating system from spying on your files and ramming LLM BS in your face
Interesting but after I tried FreeCommander and DoubleCommander I never looked back, once you customize them you just stop using anything else.
Thanks for the suggestion, I've heard of one commander but not doublecommander, will check it out 👍
I've cussed Microsoft for 25 years for not having a font selector. I use File Explorer all day and can barely see
Now that you bring it up I'm surprised also that there is no way to change the font natively, might there be a 3rd party way to do this?
@Productive_Tech Microsoft's answer is to change your system resolution I can't do that because if I do the software I develop will not look right for people with normal vision.
In a Simpson's episode, a character asked why make 32 flavours when they can't get vanilla right. I have been thinking the same thing about MS and their apps. Why keep creating gimmicky new apps when the can't even get the most basic app, the file explorer, right?
I love this analogy XD. MS is MS. They always do this kind of thing from hardware to software choices and indeed design choices as well
what model of laptop is in the video?
The laptop is the XPS 15 9510, I have used it for around 3 years and have done a full review of it here if you want to check it out :D th-cam.com/video/j-g7ng-chqA/w-d-xo.html
Miller Views is so nice ... can MS add that feature in file explorer?
If they wanted to they would of by now. It's a MacOS feature and I think the argument from MS is that the breadcrumbs in the title bar with the tiny drop down arrow achieves the same thing, which is true but it cant beat having the dedicated layout of miller columns
Does it support nilesoft shell ?
I don't think so as it has it's own modern context menu that is similar to way that nilesoft shell operates in regards to the icons and clean aesthetic
@Productive_Tech I'll try but it's not a problem if it doesn't work, just if it don't makes bugs or something. Thanks for this app anyway !
God I love using Linux,
Seems pretty neat. I will say that the improved file preview thing can also be done with PowerToy. The strongest feature has gotta be smooth scrolling and the Miller columns. Never used MacOS, but always liked how it was organized. Wish it was more lightweight, like it looks super modern and all, but what's the point when it takes longer to get from point A to point B. An option to disable or minimize animations would be great honestly.
Fair point made. Agreed if there was a lighter version with the ability to turn certain features on and off in order to increase performance would certainly be interesting
I used it sometimes back, it was slow and keep on freezing Has it improved now?
Yes a lot and V4 Will Come soon
I have installed Files(free version) app 2-3 times and uninstalled it. I love this app for everything that it offers but the problem is, this app crashes a lot. Like if I am using Files app for 10 times then it will crash 8 times and then again I have to open the files app and then it crashes again. 🥲 Am I the only one who has this issue? If someone knows solution for this, kindly provide it. It would be greatest thing to happen.
Haven't experienced this too often unless I open lots of tabs or do large file transfers. I know they come out with new versions every so often so it might be a case of waiting. But yh this app is notoriously just on the edge of usable/annoying in regards to speed and performance for many I feel
@Productive_Tech No brother, In my case I use to experience this crashes after every second. Like If I to copy paste a file of 5 mb, it will crash. And this is the single reason which forces me to uninstall it 🥲
Ok that's crazy man, I think this might be an issue on your end maybe cause I definitely haven't had this level of crashing. I've only had crashing when opening lots of tabs and doing lots of transfers. But that's just my experience :/
i like how much effort he puts in his videos, lol i love those arrows xD
Thanks! 🙂
Is there something similar but for ANDROID?
Not that I'm aware of as I don't use Android :/
Good app, but I still prefer OneCommander.
Some other viewers have also mentioned this, might look into it at some point in the future 👍
@Productive_Tech It is a bit slower, but the amount of things you can do with it is pretty incredible.
Appreciate that will check it out 👍
Imagine being miserable and using Windows. Yikes.
Bazzite is bliss
WinAero tweaker just sets configurations in the windows registry you can easily set yourself
Agreed, though I find that the interface being simple and easy to use can be easier to navigate at times especially for those who might not know how to mess with the windows registry
i don't recommend using it as default because it is slow :p
0:46 the file you downloaded isnt an exe, its more like an apk for windows (hence extension is either .appx or .msix)
Thanks for correcting me there, I just made the assumption without digging or looking further 👍
@Productive_Tech no problem, i used to abuse these to install stuff on my school laptop lol
I used this app many times but when I open this app every time it takes 1 minute to open it is so messy when we are in urgent works. According to my opinion file explorer is still better than this ( I have used the free version of this) 😊
Yep I think if they can solve some of these issues for the various system variations that people use it would be a good incentive to switch to it if your looking for a modernised alternative
This application is a open source project. The developers are doing very hard work to achieve all this features. Please support them if you can 🩷❤️
one you should look at is midi mixer its app that let you use rotary knobs or faders of a midi board as volume controls for specific apps. its the most useful app i ever used with a cheap midi board you full control over Every sound and mic input
Interesting, I think it might be too technical for me but can definitely see other people gaining value from this. Thanks for sharing, will add it on my list of things to cover.
Hmmm, just seems like a lot of eye candy to me, won't be changing...
Fair, just thought to share my experience on it as it seemed interesting. :)
7:01 2024? Xd Yeah I get it, it takes a while to do a video and surely you recorded this in 2024
Alright you got me 👀, yeah I work on multiple at a time and the actual voiceover was done a while back as other elements were being added in and while also working on other videos. Not to mention I don't always release based on what is done but also based on the topics I've put out recently. But yh my bad XD
@Productive_Tech it was just a little detail. You did a complete, easy to understand and good quality video
No worries, I appreciate that! :D
Now it's on par with Linux's file managers from 15 years ago!
Never tried Linux, maybe it's time to move to the light side... 👀
What is surprising for me that from Microsoft store is paid But when I downloaded it it was free and i didn't know any other way to download it
I think it changed at some point so that the way to get it for free would now be from the website and if you wanted to pay and support the developers for long term use there would be an easier way which was through the Microsoft store.
The problem with this app (as others have mentioned) is performance, but that's a problem with FE as well (win11 made it so much worse), I've had so many crashes and bugs with FE, and I can still replicate them. It's insane to me that no one at MS gets pissed off enough to fix it, let alone because it's their job.
To be honest it's not just the file explorer it's other aspects of windows as well. If it was any other platform people would be going mad but windows and Microsoft often just get a free pass with some of the UI and design decisions. Windows is highly scattered and inconsistent and I don't see it changing any time soon unfortunately. Maybe it's time to switch sides to the light side 🐧 or the dark side 🍎, depending on how you look at it XD
@Productive_Tech I switched to the light side years ago and it's great, but I still have windows for a few things(I also like to check in and see if they improve, but they don't) and if I help anyone it's typically windows, every time I use it, it sucks.
One day I might get around to testing Linux out and making videos on there as well, but for now it's windows only and yes I do find alot of it annoying hence the videos to get the most out of it and avoid the annoying stuff lol. Thanks for the comment.
Been using Directory Opus for years on the PC around 2004, Nothing else can even touch it, my opinion. It first came out on the Amiga computer January 1990; 35 years ago (ha-the good old days) lol, - (If you did a video on Directory Opus it would be one very long or multi parts, there is so much to it, yet easy to use.) Ho and they are still updating it in 2025.
Never heard of it until this video and seeing other people comment about it as well. And to be honest I can see why people use it from the brief research that I have done on it - it super powerful and functional. I have definitely added it to my list of topics to cover at some point in the future cause there are many people that would gain a lot of value from a program like that but just don't know about it or just want a guide on it before starting. 👍
@Productive_Tech Another one to view is "Quick Access Popup" - Fantastic app, free for Windows & still updating, I would not like to use windows without it!
Thanks! 🙂👍
I think this is a great app and I have tried it out before, however what kept me from using it was the fact that it can't be used as the file picker in programs. I really don't want to have my main file explorer app and then a different one for picking files in programs. It's just too jarring to switch between them, especially on windows 10.
Yep completely valid on windows 11 Microsoft closed the gap by adding tabs in file explorer but in windows 10 Files was even more compelling. Have you tried the replacement toggle switch that I showed where you can replace the files app from a system level. I haven't tried it but just thought to mention it if it helps
@Productive_Tech I have tried it, however it doesn't replace the file picker in other apps. I do actually use QTTabBar to tweak the file explorer to add tabs, and it has worked wonders for me. Too bad there's no dark mode.
@Productive_Tech I have tried enabling that option, which does work for showing files in the file explorer, however it doesn't replace the file picker when opening files in other apps. I have been using QTTabBar, which tweaks the windows file explorer and adds tabs as well as many other things. It has worked wonders for me. Though it would be even better if it had a dark mode.

@Productive_Tech So, my reply keeps getting deleted, but the gist of it is that didn't work and I use QTTabBar.
A solo developer can almost defeat the whole Microsoft design and development team. They should just hire this guy.
XD yh its open source and don't think anywhere near the number of people worked on this compared to the file explorer. I think in the long term I see FE just gaining these features slowly. I mean surely Microsoft can't just do nothing for another 10 years??
The thing is that Microsoft doesn't care while this is made out if passion
Registry tweak in registry manager?
Underrated Software i really like Ui but sometimes it's lagging.
Maybe 2025 is the year they fix the performance side of things...
¡Gracias!
Ah thank you so much, I really appreciate that!! 😊
Always bringing the best apps for productivity and improve user experience, thanks 🙏🏽
You are most welcome! Glad my videos are useful to people out there! :D
