I literally searched VLC tips, trick & plugins yesterday but came across a video which was 4-6 years old. Only handful of them were actually good tho. Your videos are such a breath of fresh air with genuinely useful content in the YT Tech space which is mostly filled with slop. Please don't change your format. The settings you showed are great but it would be great to you explore the various plugins & advanced features. My personal fav is "click anywhere on screen to pause"
Ah thanks a ton, your kind words mean a lot! Happy to see my videos are useful for many people. Don't worry I'll be keeping the same style of videos going forward. I wanted to keep the video as concise as possible and hence missed out on some of the advanced features - maybe this could be something for the future... Thanks for the suggestion :)
Ok, I am glad your video popped up on the side bar today (12/31/24). To call VLC the Swiss Army Knife of video players is an understatement. Like a lot of other folks, my use of it was to ensure I could always watch a video no matter the format. I had no clue it could do all those things. So I am now a subscriber. Also, thank you very much for not adding any sort of music track on top of your dialogue track. Very much appreciated to be able to hear just your voice.
Thank you very much for your kind words, and happy new year also! (I see you noted the last day of the year in your comment 😁). Thanks for subscribing, I really appreciate the support and it’s great to see that the video was useful. :)
Agreed that its the Swiss Army knife of players but it's missing the most important part - *the blade!* You can't click anywhere in the screen to start and stop the player. How could they ignore probably the most sought after feature?????
1:44 you can also just scroll on the video to change the volume, if you do that it can go up to 200% compared to in the bottom bar where it can only go up to 125% volume.
Interesting, I think I must of changed something at some point as the scrolling on the video used to only seem to change the size of the captions but now that I try it it's working as you explained. Thanks for the added info! :D
No worries! Happy to see the video was useful for you :) - I'm still new to YT so it still blows my mind that people gain value from my videos halfway around the world haha :D Thanks for the comment - greetings from the UK
Thanks and no problem! Yep definitely one of the first applications I always install too. Hmmm, maybe I should look into Firefox. Maybe a video on Firefox extensions at some point... 🙂
Stumbled upon this video by accident. It is really excellent, thank you very much for these tips. I wonder if VLC player can cut and merge video segments?
Thanks for the kind words and really happy to hear that it was useful. :D Doing a quick search online it seems that it isn't really possible to do this. I mean there might be a complicated way of doing it but yh it's probably best to look at other software for cutting and merging clips.
Awesome video Here's the tip make sure you match the cut position for example if I'm focusing on the middle then when next clip comes i should be focusing in the middle
Thank you! And thanks for tips also, I appreciate that. Generally throughout the video I have tried to keep to the match cut principle but in some places it's not always possible and can end up being jarring. It's something I am working on though, particularly as I'll likely be incorporating more hand drawn elements as it can be tricky to match digital points to that type of shot either side... Anyway, thanks once again for the comment and glad to hear it was useful :D
I have two monitors, one is set horizontal and the the other vertical. Is there a way that when playing a video it automatically plays on the monitor with the video orientation?
If you go to tool preferences and then to the video tab. You will have a few options. The first one you might want to adjust is the output and specifically the output screen that you want VLC to play on. You should be able to select the specific monitor. A bit below that you'll find the force aspect ratio and if you input the aspect ratio of your monitor vertical or horizontal and then apply those settings, I think that should help solve some of the issue. Hope that helps! :)

Ifound this information: While there isn't a built-in feature in most operating systems to automatically play a video on the monitor that best matches its orientation, you can achieve a similar effect using third-party applications or by manually adjusting the display settings depending on the video you're playing: Potential solutions: Video player software with custom display options: Check your video player settings: Many video players like VLC Media Player or MPC-HC allow you to choose which monitor to play on and may even have options to automatically adjust the display based on the video's aspect ratio. Operating system display settings: Windows Display Settings: While not perfect, you can manually switch the primary monitor to the one that best matches the video orientation before playing, ensuring the video opens on the correct screen. Monitor specific settings: Some monitors may have built-in display settings that allow you to automatically adjust the video output based on the aspect ratio, check your monitor's manual for this option. Important considerations: Video aspect ratio: Even with the right settings, some videos may not perfectly fit the screen on the vertical monitor due to their inherent aspect ratio. Application compatibility: Not all applications may support custom display options, so you may need to experiment to find the best solution for your specific needs.
@@mohamad20zx34 In regards to TH-cam, the same steady consistent growth that has occurred with the channel so far going into 2025 would be great I would say. @Productive_Tech no worries mate! So it is possible just not directly, folks can ask chat GPT or goole how to use the exe via command line. I got Chat GPT made a quick batch file to prompt for the url so all I need to do is copy and paste it. As Todd Howard would say "It just works". You can change the playback speed in TH-cam by clicking on the gear icon, and then select playback speed. That way you can watch this video without going crazy trying to catch the points being made. You are welcome.
When I was downloading mkv movies a few years ago, VLC updated and then was no longer able to play the movies. I eventually got them to play by either 1. Reverting to an earlier version of VLC, or 2. Processing the movie through HandBrake (which took hours but the processed movie would play though the updated VLC). Anyone else have a similar experience?
Not that long ago you could use VLC player to play videos on line and press the record button to save a copy to your hard drive but have now put a stop to it
@sydsaturn3337 XD I would have to agree there. It's a super cool touch and would be amazing if other app developers did similar. Or even branch out with things throughout the year without overdoing it.
@@acreguy3156 Ctrl-E brings up the panel for Adjustments and Effects. Going backwards would be difficult if the video had key-frames. When a frame passes a key frame, it would have to go back to the previous key frame, and rebuild all of the frames, otherwise you'd just get the differences in that frame rendering. It's a way of compressing the video file. Each frame only save the difference from the previous frame. The key frames contain an entire image. If there are no key frames, you'd have to go back to the start, and build the frames to the current frame you want to return to. If the video was an hour long, that would take a long time if the frame you wanted was 50 minutes in.
The principal secret is impossibility to play 360°mkv files and more 30 less 10 buttons, will be a good feature. ;) PS : When we do less well than Microsoft, we bury our heads in the sand.
Good to hear you enjoyed. Dankpods was also another inspiration but yh just adding my own spin to things. I think it's the thumbnail, but I just had to include the conehead zombie lol. Thanks for the sound quality feedback 👍
VLC is great BUT the reason I dumped it was because it misses one key feature - the ability to start and stop the player by clicking the mouse inside the player screen!!! All online video software has this feature. Why not VLC? Have they changed VLC to make it possible?
I can't disagree there. I think it's something to do with it being based off some old technology from what I read and since then no one has really updated the code... There are ways to get it through plugins and extensions. Personally, I'm not too familiar with them but as you can imagine the pause to click is fairly popular. I'll leave a github page linked where you can download the plugin from and instructions for installation. For windows, I think the only technical bit is that you have to place the extracted files in a certain folder path, but that is listed in the instructions. Hope that helps! github.com/nurupo/vlc-pause-click-plugin
Yh I didn't want to get too complex with the load of addons but this is something that I could consider for the future maybe... Thanks for the suggestion and the comment.
Thanks for the suggestion, I haven’t heard of this one before but will look into it, I thought you were referring to something else originally… thanks for the comment!
@Productive_Tech mpv is another open source media player, it's focus is on being minimalistic, the thing about it is that it's scriptable , and it's full of features though tou need to use cli for that, but basic usage doesn't require it, and it's better at rendering videos than vlc. Once you start using mpv there's no going back, specially on linux. (Like VLC it's also cross platform).
Completely agree there, though I would recommend you check out the "screen box" application from the Microsoft Store which is built upon VLC with a far more modern design and UI. I'll leave it linked below if you want to check it out :) apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NTSNMSVCB5L?hl=en-us&gl=GB&ocid=pdpshare
Thanks, though apologies if it is a little fast, I found that generally this is the pace that many other viewers feel happy with. :/ You can always slow it down from the built in TH-cam player controls. Hope that helps.
I’ve taken the feedback on board for future videos. I personally haven’t had any concerns issued on any previous videos by viewers. There are also many positive comments on this video as well so it can be difficult to find a balance that works for everyone. I do apologise but you can always slow it down in the player, though I appreciate this might not be the ideal fix
Ah ok, good to know, I wasn't aware of that as I assume it only applies to dedicated movies as opposed to just your standard video playback as I cant seem to find that option on normal files
The infuriating thing about VLC Media Player is that, although you can set Effects (such as increased audio volume), when you Convert & Save, it totally disregards your Effects. So near, and yet so far.
It seems vlc cannot do: A single hot key to flip (mirror image) the video, Play a file from a folder and play the rest of the files in order, Have a completly skinless frame with no controls or title bar. Pot player does all the above but is only available for Windows😢 Pot player is far superior and is less clunky than vlc.
Never used it myself personally so will have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion. Not sure if there is a setting for some of these issues but yh I will agree that VLC does have a very outdated UI
I guess that's the main thing really - just getting the app to work for your needs. I might have to check it out as many others have also suggested this player
VLN is average good but never was capable of reproducing videos with 5.1 soundtracks correctly since it simply mess up all the channel mapping and there were never a fix or this issue which keep unsolved (and I sayinf this because I take ten years following it). So if you need to play 5.1 surround videos forget about VLC and just use MPC (Media Player Classic) which reproduce 5.1 tracks flawlessly. Shame on VideoLan!!
Apologies if it is a little fast, I will try to improve this for next time, I found previously that slowing it down is also a turn off for others but maybe slightly slower might be better
Yh that's fair the UI is a bit outdated, thought it looks like I might need to create a pot player video at some point it seems from the number of comments.
Yeah I would agree there, I think there are themes available but seems to be quite a bit of hassle for little gain. Have you checked the screen box application on the Microsoft store? It seems to be built upon VLC but has a very modern UI, might be worth checking it out
Though I've heard that by pressing the like button it unlocks extreme levels of video quality when using VLC :)
Good one, and it works.😁

PS : When we do less well than Microsoft, we bury our heads in the sand.
Interesting...
Need to add a timer to stop streaming audio. Like an alarm clock.
Would be a good addition for sure, not sure if there is a plugin or extension for this potentially
Thank you soo
Bro u took BOG seriously hu 😂 it's just like his content but I like it I will be up for ur every video just improve the sound quality ❤
@Productive_Tech Great, thanks! Love your video👍.
@@acreguy3156 No worries :)
You can change binding settings
@@FallingFlying. How? Thanks👍.
vlc for android need a major upgrade,
i got many error on that .
and there is no good video player for f android that's opensource
Interesting, I wasn't aware that people also use VLC on mobile platforms too
You missed the Subtitle downloader, VLSub
Yh I didn't want to get too complex with the load of addons but this is something that I could consider for the future maybe... Thanks for the suggestion and the comment.
Cool drawings
Thanks! Hopefully should add an extra element to the videos going forward :D
mpv next
Thanks for the suggestion, I haven’t heard of this one before but will look into it, I thought you were referring to something else originally… thanks for the comment!
@Productive_Tech mpv is another open source media player, it's focus is on being minimalistic, the thing about it is that it's scriptable , and it's full of features though tou need to use cli for that, but basic usage doesn't require it, and it's better at rendering videos than vlc. Once you start using mpv there's no going back, specially on linux. (Like VLC it's also cross platform).
Appreciate that info, thanks for the suggestion. Will have to check it out
You can stream with vlc on twitch or yt if you want 😂
Thanks for that info XD
View onvif security cams on your LAN
VLC is great If only it could have a user-friendly GUI...
Completely agree there, though I would recommend you check out the "screen box" application from the Microsoft Store which is built upon VLC with a far more modern design and UI. I'll leave it linked below if you want to check it out :)
apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NTSNMSVCB5L?hl=en-us&gl=GB&ocid=pdpshare
The GUI is perfect the way it is, You can add custom skins but why bother
Good information, but why so fast?
Thanks, though apologies if it is a little fast, I found that generally this is the pace that many other viewers feel happy with. :/ You can always slow it down from the built in TH-cam player controls. Hope that helps.
@Productive_Tech No it is too fast! You need to leave a beat between audio edits. And the occasional pause.
@@mikepanchaud1 Thanks for the feedback I'll try and implement it going forwards
Use MPC instead.
Its also free.
Faster buff.
No loading when fast forward
You ll thank me later
Thanks for the suggestion, will have to check it out
I loved the bit where the gaps between his sentences were all deleted creating a stress-inducing flow of unnatural speech with no gaps or breathing.
^ This.
Unfortunately a lot of videos are produced that way lately. Absolutely annoying! Destroys the content of the information.
I’ve taken the feedback on board for future videos. I personally haven’t had any concerns issued on any previous videos by viewers. There are also many positive comments on this video as well so it can be difficult to find a balance that works for everyone. I do apologise but you can always slow it down in the player, though I appreciate this might not be the ideal fix
bonus (3:18) u can also get more subtitles if ur watching movies for "free" if u went to view-->subtitles
Ah ok, good to know, I wasn't aware of that as I assume it only applies to dedicated movies as opposed to just your standard video playback as I cant seem to find that option on normal files
@Productive_Tech no, it's made for pirated movies, it uses an API to get subtitles for what show/movie ur watching
Oh right ok thanks for clearing that up
There's a few websites you can download subtitles from too. I've had to fix the sync on some of them though.
The infuriating thing about VLC Media Player is that, although you can set Effects (such as increased audio volume), when you Convert & Save, it totally disregards your Effects. So near, and yet so far.
I don't really use that feature all too much personally so wasn't aware of that. Interesting to know though so thanks for the comment
Record your player with effects?
make a video about potplayer
Appreciate the suggestion, will consider it :)
Spewing they disabled playing TH-cam video stream in VLC
It seems vlc cannot do:
A single hot key to flip (mirror image) the video,
Play a file from a folder and play the rest of the files in order,
Have a completly skinless frame with no controls or title bar.
Pot player does all the above but is only available for Windows😢
Pot player is far superior and is less clunky than vlc.
Never used it myself personally so will have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion. Not sure if there is a setting for some of these issues but yh I will agree that VLC does have a very outdated UI
Drag and drop a folder creates a playlist to be sorted by names. It can be sorted
{control} H for minimal interface
@@robumf I didn't know about this so thanks for that! :D
MPC-HC user here
Interesting, the only issue for me personally is that it seems to be outdated in regards to the UI
@Productive_Tech it's been discontinued for years yet still working with all the features that i need..
Interesting, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks!
Old dogs already knew, old tricks.🐺
Your narration drives me mad. Take a breath. Pause at the end of a sentence. I gave up after 2 minuets.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to add a few from frames between the audio next time
The must...
I use mpc-hc
Interesting... the only negative for me would be it's interface as it seems quite dated
you are talking far too fast slow down and maybe people won't switch off
Apologies if it is a little fast, I will try to improve this for next time, I found previously that slowing it down is also a turn off for others but maybe slightly slower might be better
#ModernVLC
Yep, it is in need of a more modern UI
I hate vlc UI. So i use pot player
Yh that's fair the UI is a bit outdated, thought it looks like I might need to create a pot player video at some point it seems from the number of comments.
Oh my god, are you in a race? Too fast for me to understand.😮
Manic presentation, slow down a bit.
Sorry about that, noted for next time, please do slow it down in the yt player if that helps
Bog vibes
Slim gui viewer linux
cvlc
the problem with VLC imo is that it looks very outdated, and the one in the Store that looks a little modern lacks most of the features
Yeah I would agree there, I think there are themes available but seems to be quite a bit of hassle for little gain. Have you checked the screen box application on the Microsoft store? It seems to be built upon VLC but has a very modern UI, might be worth checking it out
@Productive_Tech I didn't and I am glad you told me about it, I am gonna check it out.
Thanks man
No worries 🙂
The unnatural TH-camr fast speaking without breaks thing is outdated and annoying. Please stop doing it. It makes your video unwatchable.
Secrets of TH-cam - You can put chapters in the timeline!
I have chapters in all my videos, it is not working?
@Productive_Tech working now, useful stuff
Great to hear 👍
Didn't watch, but good video
It’s too unpredictable a lot of the times, sometimes videos play sometimes they don’t, making it unreliable!
I haven't had this issue personally, might this be to do with the version or platform that you're running it on?
