    Too bad that the deny list can contain only 2048 entries and any other entry past that will be ignored. Such a drag. Frustratingly useless since in time you'll need to ban thousands of IPs not just 2048 max (limit that is completely idiotic) :(

    Why did you cripple the 4 bay? If anything it should had been reversed. Cripple the two bay with 3Gbps and have the 4 bay 6Gbps with 10Gbps usb c. I think thats actually how it was supposed to be qnd you you had gotten your info wrong as reversed on your order to the factory that made these and you didn't catch it until it was too late and just said "F it" and kept it this way? Thats what my logical high quality mind comes up with.

    Say given a limited storage on Google, I would like to keep the most recent photos on Google photos/which would be a replicate of my iPhone album .. but I would use google to take advantage of the AI editing of Google Photos. Now how would the QNAP backup distinguish between old photos that have already been backed up on QNAP vs files that have been deleted for a number of reasons (ie duplicates, poor quality, spam on social media etc) on iPhone/google Photos? The ultimate question is that QNAP here is the ultimate backup of photos/videos, it should keep all the older media that is no longer on iphone/google photos but delete photos that were intentionally deleted either on google photos/iphone. How can this be managed practically? Cheers.

If I configure a single parity array using the software control mode and QNAP software, and the TR-004 fails, can the array be rebuilt with the drives in a new enclosure? I didn’t see an option to export the configuration for rebuilding. Is presenting the drives individually to Windows and creating a software defined RAID using Storage Spaces superior in that regard?

This is not a standard use for the NAS so we can’t guarantee it working, but if this sort of configuration were to be configured, the “Network & Virtual Switch” app would probably be the place to configure it. • @QNAPCollege

      Hi. Thank you for the question. Qsync Pro is now integrated into Qfile Pro, so at this point just Qfile Pro should work. For older versions, Qfile Pro has been for general backup and access to files from your mobile device, whereas Qsync is for file synchronization across devices, ideal for collaborative projects with others or just working on your own solo project across devices.

    There was not enough information on the different volumes. I would like information on what situations would benefit from each of the three volume types. Also the person spoke far too quickly so it was a bit difficult to understand. The audio quality could be better

    • @QNAPCollege
      @QNAPCollege 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, mkrugr6401. Thank you for your feedback. Static volumes are primarily for older legacy models that are being migrated over. The main choice for most users now will be between thick and thin. Most people simply deploying a NAS for their own use will be better served by a thick volume. The performance is a little better and you don’t need to keep track of how much is stored on the volume versus how much available space there is. Thin volumes are useful if you need to allocate storage in a more flexible dynamic way among numerous users as storage that isn’t used in a thin volume can be used elsewhere. For more information on storage volumes, you may want to reference our video tutorial, QNP104 Storage Structure: Understanding Storage Management in QTS. Does this give a better idea of what you’re looking for, or do you have a specific scenario that you’d like to better understand?

    34:21 I've heard that thick vs thin doesn't make much a difference in terms of performance for editing on QuTS hero. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @QNAPCollege
      @QNAPCollege 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since thin volumes have to allocate the storage before writing the data, there will be some performance impact, but, many other elements impact the performance as well, so, depending on the environment the difference might not be very significant depending on the CPU, drives, connection type, etc.

    When using an ethernet 10 Gigabit connection instead of Thunderbolt. Do we need to configure anything else for compatibility with FCPX or other NLE software? I am using a Thunderbolt 2 to 10 Gigabit ethernet adapter. Folks on TH-cam like NAScompares have said that FCPX doesn't work with network folders unless they're configured with programs like ISCSI Initiator X. Is that still necessary?

    • @QNAPCollege
      @QNAPCollege 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Ryan. Thank you for your question. First off, it should be noted that QNAP’s Thunderbolt connection is a Thunderbolt over IP connection, and so it will function in a similar way to the 10GbE connection; although if you have someone connect over Thunderbolt their connection won’t need to use any of the 10GbE bandwidth. Using Thunderbolt over IP allows for multiple editors over Thunderbolt as well as your network. FCPX and other major NLE software should be compatible with SMB shares. Many videos on this channel have used this method with FCPX. You would mount the folder in MacOS and then select that folder as the storage space for the Library. Here is a link that addresses some of the requirements for NAS storage with FCP: support.apple.com/en-us/101919 If there was a setup where the SMB share wasn’t working, as mentioned in the NAScompares video, you can also connect over iSCSI. iSCSI may also provide improved speed. This can be implemented on our NAS with no additional charge. You would create an iSCSI LUN, which is a sort of storage volume used with iSCSI, along with a target that attaches to the LUN and allows your computer to connect to it. On the computer end, you need an iSCSI initiator to connect to it. While the Windows OS includes an iSCSI initiator natively, MacOS does not; so if you want to use this method with a Mac, you will need to purchase that software for each connecting Mac. Another thing to consider is that multiple editors will not be able to connect to a single LUN at the same time, because this would risk data corruption. So if you want multiple editors working simultaneously, you would create multiple LUNs. This brings up the question of whether you want to configure the LUN as a thick provisioned LUN or a Thin provisioned LUN. Thick provisioning blocks out a set amount of storage space that is only available for that LUN and will most likely have higher performance. Thin provisioned LUNs will give you more storage flexibility in that if storage isn’t being used by the LUN, it can be used by other LUNs and/or volumes. Here is a tutorial on setting up an iSCSI LUN on QNAP:

      I really appreciate the in depth response @@QNAPCollege . I might be a little more confused than many of your customers. I followed the directions for creating and mapping the iSCSI LUN but iSCSI initiator X doesn't locate the device using the IP address. Is the port alway 3260? Since Apple moved to M1 and M2 processors, it seems like software makers like "globalSAN iSCSI initiator" (from studio network solutions) no longer support their product and don't have a replacement product.

      @@QNAPCollege I've been hacking away at this issue all afternoon and I'm not getting far. I found a location in Mac OS security settings that prevented it from seeing the IP address. HOWEVER after granting access, while using KernSafe ISCSI Initiator X , I still can't see any Target Names. I've disabled and enabled the LUN on the QNAP. I've unmapped and mapped the LUN . The IQN still doesn't show up in KernSafe and both the address and the IQN doesn't show in ATTO XTendSAN

      Hi, Ryan. Thank you for the followup. Ports shouldn’t come into play here, as this should be set up locally within your network. Ports are only applicable regarding remote access (FYI, port forwarding is not a secure method to setup remote access, so we don’t recommend it as the security risk is substantial). While we can’t speak authoritatively on various third party iSCSI initiators, one issue that you may be experiencing if the initiator isn’t able to locate the LUN using the IP address, is that the iSCSI target may be on a different subnet than your computer. If this is the case it’s kind of like you’re trying to mail someone a letter only using their apartment number; whereas if you’re already in the same apartment complex then the apartment number would be all you need. You may want to consider creating another iSCSI target, but on the “Network Portal” page of the creation wizard, make sure you select the connection that has an ip address that is on the same network as your computer; basically the first three numbers of the IP address should be the same. Then you can unmap the original target you created from the LUN and map the new target to the LUN. And then try finding the new target with the initiator. If this doesn’t work you can also feel free to set up a support ticket with us for more hands on help, (here is a how-to link for that: www.qnap.com/en/how-to/faq/article/how-do-i-open-a-technical-support-ticket-with-qnap) but of course also feel free to comment here as well. Hope this helps. @@RyanSiemers

    hi there! Thanks for the video, I liked it a lot. I have a question, I am connecting a TR-002 that has a USB-C 3.2 gen 2 port (10Gbps) and I am connecting it to a 2020 iMac 27" (the latest model with an Intel chip) through one of the four ports USB-A (not one of the 2 USB-C thunderbolt). I did the speed test and it gave me 120 MBps writing and 150 MBps reading. Is this ok or should it be faster? If I connect it from USB-C (thurnderbolt) to the USB-C of the Mac (I don't have a cable, I would have to buy one) would it be faster? I would like if you could help me understand this well, I was expecting a little more transfer speed to be honest. Thank you!

      Hi, Martin. Thank you for your question. In this case your bottleneck is not the connection type. The numbers you are getting are fairly typical of a TR-002 configured with HDDs in a RAID 1. QNAP tested the TR-002 with two Samsung 850 Pro SSDs in RAID 0 (NTFS file system connecting to a PC) at 469 MB/s read and 452.1 MB/s write, so that’s the high end of what’s possible with the unit. The biggest factor here is the drives. And then RAID 0 is faster than RAID 1 as well, although there is no redundancy with RAID 0 so if either drive fails the data would be gone from both drives. Using a faster cable probably wouldn’t improve your numbers here. When it comes to connections like 10GbE or USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10GbE), or Thunderbolt™, etc., you can kind of view it like the size of a freeway, in that if there’s a wider freeway, that can give cars the opportunity to drive faster by alleviating traffic, but there is a point when it doesn’t matter how wide the freeway is, it just matters how fast the car can drive. In this analogy you could kind of view the drives in the TR-002 as your car’s engine. There can be other factors as well with various servers, but in your setup the key variables for speed are the drives and RAID configuration.

    Hi, I ve successfuly set up Raid 1. All stats are good. But, how do I actually know that files are mirrored automatically once I place something on a drive? There is no visual indication that both disks have same files (TR-002). I understand setting up Raid 1 does this on its own, but I dont see that since only one Disk folder appears. PS. What is that arrow button bellow log icon, top right corner? Thank you :)

      Hi, Ken. Thank you for reaching out. as you have observed, when the drives are combined as a RAID group, you won’t actually see the storage space appear as individual drives, it will only appear as a single disk. But rest assured if one drive fails, you will still have the data on the other drive and be able to add in a new drive to rebuild the RAID. Regarding the arrow below the icon, this is a refresh button.

    If I buy the QNAP TR-004, can I start out with two drives as a RAID 1 and then later add two more without affecting the first RAID 1 data?

    • @QNAPCollege
      @QNAPCollege 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If using the TR-004 as an external drive adding drives as you go would require you to reinitializing the RAID and wipe all of the data stored on it. If you choose to use the TR-004 as NAS expansion, then you can use the QTS (QNAP NAS OS) RAID, which can be expanded with new drives as you go.

      Thank you for your question? There should be a little less overhead resources needed for the hardware RAID, so the performance will most likely be a little better.

    For a solo operator (TH-camr and small production) would the new TVS-H674T or TVS-h874T be my best choice? I'm a Mac Studio user, so the TB4 ports feels very tempting. What disk setup would you recommend for both live projects (up to 8TB) and cache? I guess I can't share M2 disks for both cache and live project folders?

    • @QNAPCollege
      @QNAPCollege 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, persvanstrom. Either of these models would work great; whether you choose 6-bay or 8-bay, you can easily have dozens of TB on either one. In terms of configuration, for the primary storage a RAID 6 giving you two drives for redundancy would likely make sense. Regarding the M.2, you would need to choose between caching, tiering, or creating a separate storage pool to work off of. Setting up a cache would be more automated, but creating an extra storage pool would ensure that you’re always working off of the M.2 storage; and then after you complete a project you could offload it to the other drives to free up space on the M.2 pool. Here is a contact link, if you would like to reach out to a sales representative to go more in depth regarding your specific workflow and NAS deployment: www.qnap.com/en-us/contact-us.
