Description:
In 2017, Team Cherry launched Hollow Knight, a game that redefined the Metroidvania genre and captivated gamers worldwide. Over seven years later, fans are still eagerly waiting for the next chapter, Hollow Knight: Silksong, but Team Cherry has kept updates scarce, leaving the fanbase in a mix of frustration and curiosity. Why has Silksong’s development taken so long, and why has Team Cherry remained silent?
At major gaming events like Gamescom 2024’s Opening Night Live, Silksong dominated the conversation despite not even being present. Host Geoff Keighley even issued a pre-show warning to fans, reminding them not to expect Silksong updates.
In this video, we explore the possible reasons behind Silksong's delays, how Hollow Knight’s massive success may have created new challenges for Team Cherry, and why this situation isn’t as unusual as it might seem.

Ill release slik song soon
Team cherry is just doing a valve, but it makes sense because they're actually a small dev team and not the largest gaming platform
Imagine if GTA6 comes out before Silksong. The memes that will happen
I suspect they want to release a feature complete game as well. They shipped HallowKnight with most of the dlcs for free. Also they probably want to move onto different projects as they are nearing 10yrs on this IP.
Also Naughty Dog will be releasing a scifi game before star citizen is out
I saw 5 minutes of this video and now I'm playing Slay The Spire again... I'll be back for the rest of the video soon 😅
Is the narrator the Brackeys guy??
I really, really, *really* appreciate the kindness in this discussion -- as someone who has just recently jumped into game development and seen how *painfully* slow it can be, it is so horrible to see how unknown creators go from being dark horse successes to being attacked everywhere. I caught up on some video game kickstarters I backed a few years ago and all the comments that are upset things aren't delivered on time, even with incredible communication, is so, so demoralizing. I appreciate that, even without communication, you're out here giving people hope and able to make reasonable conclusions that don't involve death threats or hate mail. Thank you.
The 4k 10 hour sex scenes added another 5 years to development.
i got bored after a few rounds
this is the same thing that happened to geometry dash 2.2. It was planned to release some weeks after the 2.1 update, but ended up taking 7 YEARS. Everyone was hopeless and thinking it wouldnt even be better than 2.1, but when it came out it had more than double the content the game had before, and everyone loved it
I don’t think is a team anymore I think is one person now.
I hope Ari is able to eat a croissant every day now while working on Silksong
I’m telling you the game is gonna have a primal aspid in disguise Probably mid game if I’m to guess and I try in this one will have something similar to the path of pain
after 150 hours i quit mostly. because to be honest its game design is pretty flawed. still a great game tho
Imagine sending death threats over a game you didn't like, which you can refund as well just in that case...
The reason why nothings come out is because they were working on Waterfall and others guys.
my tinfoil aht theory is that nintendo is barging the release of silksong. because i remeber the game was suppost to be a nintendo exclusive.
idk I played through it twice and was like meh, don't feel the need to keep doing this again and again
i feel like the reason is that at first as Ari said ideas create new ideas and the game reached a point where it's so big and huge and then along the way with delay and the unbelievably continuous anticipation for the game they felt pressure that game don't meet the fans' expectations which I got it. and as the game got more and more bigger more works need to be done.
I hope it gets released with Switch 2, if not I am not waiting for it anymore.
Why does this video feel so... plagiarized from someone else
A Spanish channel called Fenyxer stole my script. Just look at the upload dates. Nothing I can do about it, unfortunately.
Just dont be fucking silent its that easy but they refuse to say ANYTHING
One pugilist or MMA fighter said that getting up at 5 am to run in the cold streets was hard to do when he was a teenager rookie, but it was WAY harder when his sheets were made of silk, heh. Team Cherry are millionaires now, they released Hollow Knight because they had to financially, they could be working on Silksong during all their lives without worrying about money, as simple as that. The tester that said Hollow Knight was rushed and unfinished and that Silksong is going to be much better made me chuckle. I beat Hollow Knight this afternoon, just saved the last worm a few hours ago, the game is very close to being perfect. Navigating through Green Path for the first time, seeing Hornet evading me, all while I was exploring a beautiful and alive world compared to the first area of the game and hearing gorgeous Green path ost, man that moment was special. Hollow Knight has the special kind of magic of devs pouring all their love into the game, first because they love making games and then because they were in the verge of homelessness. Team Cherry are talented, no doubt, but the odds are all stacked against them, fans expectations were turned into disappointment, rage or just not caring about the sequel, they are going to keep working in the next shiny idea all the time they want, and they are just not hungry anymore, hell their bellies are filled for life. And this is the part when I'm going to be the most cynical, bro just look at the 5 year old trailer, its the trailer of a game that looks finished and ready to be shipped in the next 12 months. There are a couple of possibilities, the trailer is actually a big lie and they quickly pierced together good parts to show, which makes no sense, they are working on every single idea for the game, no matter how shitty or ridiculous it is, or something big happened behind the scenes, and I mean life-altering big, thats the reason they stopped uploading posts. I just dont know if the game will come out. And I dont think Silksong is going to be as good as HK. I remember the first time I found a fake worm, that was after beating the game, I jumped to a near elevation, and the fucking thing walked the wall and kept chasing me lol. The moment I went back to the 7 ghosts house at the distant village or whatever the name is, and found the 7 masks laying around, I felt a sense of discomfort and creepiness very few pieces of media ever provoked me. 15 euros for this game is an absolute steal, and Im glad I was able to play it. Silksong might be the greatest game ever made or the biggest failure, and thats the devs fault. But hey, thank you for Hallownest. It was special.
2030 fs
I dont blame them. I agree with a lot of commenters below that even just a minor newsletter/"hey were alive post" would be _nice_ - but im not expecting anything. I too would try to shut out my own fanbase if theyre getting so incredibly ravenous that they literally need to be told ahead of time that the game they want will NOT be showing up in the showcase. Even after all these years, im still super excited for silksong! Im willing to wait a few more if need be. I waited ten years for Madness: Project Nexus, i can wait for silksong.
Just don't buy it guys
Social media made the world so asocial.... it's amazing, how a few communication platforms could destroy every human trait, except hate and greed. Sad, sad...
Its literally just OMORI all over again, and look how that game turned out to be (fucking fantastic!). Just let Team Cherry cook, and be happy whenever it releases
Why are people mad? I would rather have a unbuggy masterpiece the takes longer, then an unfinished mess that does not fall under the original plan of the game.
This opened my eyes a little. I was very confused why this silence happened so often, but I somewhat undertand now
so random seeing myself on a TH-cam vid
The only reason is that they are now multi millionaires. It is way harder to wake up in you mansion in silk sheets and go grind in game development. When doing their first game they were broke and I can guarantee their life depended on the game. Ok well their financial life depended on the game generating sales.
Nice essay. I enjoyed the video but... this game isn't coming out. It's vaporware. It's just a very elaborate money making scheme.
I genuinely still don't know why people think 6 years for three people to make a video game is a long time. And given how trash the vocal minority is, I'm not surprised they've resorted to no news at all.
It is a long time. 2D Metroidvania game, not an MMO or open world game with ultrarrealistic details.
They simply don't
I honestly forgot about Silksong for about 3 months , i'm ready to wait for many years if we still get good metroidvanias in between like Bo and Nine Sols
I already 100% slay the spire a long time ago. Monster train as well. Wildfrost I got to the point where I didn't feel like it but that game was also GOATed. Everything else is meh.
the best way out of the pressure and expectations is for people to forget about Silksong.
I'm gonna put a guess on about 20 years time, since it's probably not coming out of they don't go broke
I'm OK with them working in secrecy... But then, what does Mathew 'Leth' Griffin do as a PR and marketing manager, lol? That sounds like the most boring job ever. I'm sure they can manage that 1 tweet per year cadence themselves.
I remember when I was becoming hollow as a Elden Ring fan waiting for the game, I still reminded myself that Silk Song fans have it worse. I can’t wait to play the game myself too though! Hollow Knight was amazing
Whenever they run out of money again
You got a really calming voice, thanks for collecting all that information.
They are just furnishing it to the max so to not disappoint our way too hyped expectations. Anyday now
It's literally just like minecraft. The only difference is that thanks to minecraft being a sandbox, it could be played, without any harm to the game, during its infinite development process of continually adding content forever.
People still milking this?
played this for 30 minutes. dropped. 🫤
No, that's the answer. We've seen how fans have been, zero patience, zero reserve, they all display signs of that same toxicity that causes these developers to have to go radio silent - resulting in even basic news about milestone progress to become and impossibility for those of us just looking for minute and reasonable reasurance. It's so sad to see devs harassed by their fanbase for taking their time to make us all more content we're NOT owed in the slightest. I loved Hollow Knight, Undertale, and Stardew Valley - and I'll wait as long as the Devs need in order to put out something as INCREDIBLE as a sequel to the best titles ever made within their respective genres. Grow up guys, go out there and play / discover other games in the meantime. Give other Devs a chance, and before you know it you'll one day be pleasntly SURPRISED to see your favorites back again and finally realized in their fully fleshed out sequels. To Toby, Team Cherry, & The ConcernedApe: Thank you for all your hard work and for what you've already given us. I patiently await what you'll put out next. Until then, I wish you all the luck, health and happiness one fan possibly can. Cheers. To better days, and some damn fine games on the horizon.
I played it for like two weeks, that was last year, never touched the game again.
