Airbrush Techniques: Painting Your Model The Easy Way!
When airbrushing a model kit, there is a need to sequence your color coats, weathering, clear coats, decals and washes to get the best results and to protect your work during each step. I use acrylic paints and clear coats in my airbrush. In this video, I'll be showing my preferred painting & weathering sequence that yields professional results with the least amount of work. Though these techniques take some practice to perfect, for me these methods are quick, easy and effective!

Airbrush Techniques: Masking Your Model The Easy Way!

When airbrushing a multi-colored model kit, there is a need to mask previously painted colors as we add more. The demarcation line between colors may be hard or soft. For slightly soft demarcation lines between camo colors we'll use rolled...

I think ehat slows me down is using putty on the seams of the older kit that I'm doing. I use Tamiya white putty and wet sand yhem with thinner and a Q tip sp that i don't lose any panel lines. Im getting better and quicker on each one, but it's still not my favorite part of the hobby.

Hi Jon. Thanks for the great vid. I like the desert camo production line. Saves on colour change clean ups and time etc. I find that airbrushing can be a bit stressy at times as the paints are more finicky and so mistakes can be spectacular in nature! AWESOME ideas, easy, quick'n'(not)dirty...just how i like it. I use a old bottle of Latex for masking, i still don't remember why we own this😂. This also works fine (especially with the canopy) BUT isn't as cost effective as your idea. It is natural Latex, so no Additives, and doesn't react with my acrylic or oil paints. A GIANT drawback is it drying time. A masked Canopy has to sit for a few days until i can touch it with a brush (i don't use a airbrush, would be no problem then)... Great tip on post shading with pastels. I will definitely give it a try. My question is how do you clean the brush you used to apply it so you don’t end up smearing a black or other dark color onto your next project that needs a lights gray or tan?

    • @jonsmodelkitreview4624

That's a great question. I will rub the brush on a fine file or pull a razor blade sideways across the bristles so it releases the previous color (looks like a little smoke coming from the brush). You can use a piece of paper to test the next color before using it on the model. Cheers!

Best model-related investment I've ever made. I still use those primarily, but I try other brands as necessary. I haven't found a new go-to paint brand yet. Another one of my favorites as a kid. I liked the paint and armament options and built a few. I recently made the mistake of picking up a Hobbycraft. As i was building the kit I noticed there was no mention of mounting cannons anywhere. At least Monogram showed you where to open holes. These Monogram kits still hold a place in the modeling world. Newbies can work on their skills without breaking the bank and a seasoned builder can use it as a nostalgia build or to cleanse their pallet after an aggravating build. Once again, I'm enjoying your video. Upon returning to modeling, the first two kits purchased were Monogram P-51B and P-51D to revive my modeling skills. Like you, I don't overweather the planes, so the raised panel lines don't drive me crazy.

@JOHNCORCORAN-m2i Right on! I use pastels to apply weathering, and they work well with raised or recessed panel lines. I have several pastel weathering videos on the channel if you are interested. Cheers!

It's funny, so many times when I watch your videos, I see another plane in my stash. Another great video here. My dad flew P-40N and P-47N during WW2. I remember one year as a kid, I got a 47N for a birthday gift. I know he wanted to "help" me build it, but I was stubborn and said that I can do it. So now I have one of each to put on the shelf. Hopefully, they will turn out better than in my youth. And yes, my AMT P-40N was made in the U.S.A. Keep up the good work.

Wow, hello Jon, I've actually been able to learn several new tricks for future projects today, the rubber cement thing...ufff I remember when I was studying advertising, I used it in graphic projects, however I never related it to masking, now I've started a search campaign for rubber cement hahaha. The wet paper thing is a very good recommendation, I have to use it, until now I only filled the holes or gaps with UHU Patafix or with packing sponge, so thanks for giving these very useful tips, greetings and until the next video

GOOD MORNING, from OHIO I’ve been watching your channel for a while now I REALLY LEARNED A LOT WATCHING THIS EPISODE !!!! I have a couple sacrifice kits I practice on to try and test new techniques… I will try the Rubber Cement Technique, looks like it works great… I still use TESTERS ENAMELS I’ll have to see how it reacts to the RUBBER CEMENT… This VIDEO was very informative, glad I subscribed and tuned in 😊…… I will watch this again…… Model On……. Right on Chris! I'm not sure how these mediums will react to the enamels so trying them out on a scrap kit is a great idea. Good luck!

Great tips for masking Jon! I’ve never used the rubber glue technique but I have used liquid-mask from certain manufacturers and there are times where it’s near impossible to get it all out especially in smaller corners or depressed areas. Maybe I’ll give the rubber cement a try next time and see, though I think it will be similar. Thanks!

@@SCSuperheavy114 Thank you! This week I pushed three planes through the paint shop using these techniques. Though 99.5% comes off very quickly, you are correct that the rubber cement can get stuck in fine crevices. I use a fine Q-tip, sharp toothpick or other creative means to remove all the residue. With a little practice though it's still my favorite technique for covering large areas quickly and effectively. Another tip when removing the finer pieces of rubber cement: dip the fine Q-tip or toothpick in rubber cement and let it dry. Then use that to get at the smaller bits. The dry rubber cement tends to stick to itself. Cheers!
