Monogram’s kits were so good and daring in their releases that their legend lives on.!.Who else has given us a 1/48 PBY and B-29..The Monogram B-24 has been going on strong and only now has only been released by Hobbyboss as a new tool this year..
Great kit review Jon on this kit..I would be happy to build this model if rereleased again..
All the best from the U.K🇬🇧🇺🇸👍

Jon have built this kit back in 2003. It is a great kit and had no fit issues nor any filler to use on this kit. Great detill inside and out. Made mine as a black cat with the bars and stars. Turn out great and is huge. The tires to get definitions from the rims to the tires, I painted sliver on the rims and outside edges of the tires to the rims. This way I could see a little bit of the edge of the rim and used my hobby knife to scribe a more defining line. It turned out good. This is a great kit and with a little bit more work on the inside can be made into a show stopper. Model on my friend and have a wonderful day.....😊😊😊😊

This kit & the B58 may be the last Monogram kits I'll build as I've built most & so many have been superceded by better kits.

Nice Jon. I love a flying boat. Looks like a very nice (large!) kit.
RAAF used all black Catalinas on long range mine laying missions ( "Black Cats") flying at 2-3 m/6-10ft to drop mines as close as 10m/30ft to target vessels at anchorage.
And Qantas did Perth to Sri Lanka mail runs once a week with modified Cats flying 30+ hours from 1943. Called the "Flight of the Double Sunrise".
Absolutely fantastic aircraft. Lots have survived which is really cool.
    Floating at dock diorama?
Keen to see the end result. Cheers Matt.🦘🦘🦘

hi Jon. Hopefully Revell/monogram re-pop this at some point as I would like it.
None for sale here. To import, roughly 200AUD/134USD for the kit and 100AUD/68USD for the postage!
I think that if it was reissued, they would sell heaps of them.
Nice if Eduard borrowed the moulds and added extras as they did with Classic Airframes Savoia Marchetti SM.79.
(the metal u/c legs as you suggested, belts and instruments would enough).
      Thanks for the review.

Hey Jon, a combination of great minds think alike and deja vu, this is your third of recent videos that I have on my build list , all extremely helpful. I enjoyed your summation of the KEY STONE" contribution of this aircraft to Nava! History. They even have a strictly night bomber version that was quite successful called the
" Blackcat " Only two historical caveats like most aircraft, pilots had to be careful to take off climb out quickly plus not search at close to the water because of those wings causing ground effect. Tragically Jacques Cousteau son was killed in a ground effect incident and John Denver wrote a sing about it called I am Calypso The CAT, was also a key component in the USS Indianapolis incident,
I do have a painting problem you might be able to assist on. In the " old" days achieving a nice aluminium finish , like Century Series aircraft was not too difficult. However with all these new paints I don't know how to achieve it. The aircraft about six months out is a B-58 I suspect that and the F-104 had very distinctive polished surfaces. Do you know what paints I can try and steps to use like primer and finish I could try? The last
" metalizer " I used was a railroad paint made by Floquil ( out of business) with some buffing up. I've also got a X B51 and Ju52 but those surfaces were note highly polished. However the JU 52 will drive you crazy on decals. Thanks for the help, definitely enjoying the larger kits you've been reviewing. Cheers Bob.

@@c123bthunderpig I've heard Alclad is supposed to give good results for bare aluminum if applied over gloss black. I currently just use rattle can aluminum for the bare metal finishes. I managed to find this kit a while ago, and will be building mine as an RNZAF machine based in Fiji and the Solomons . The RNZAF only ever used the PBY-5, ( & not the Amphibian PBY-5A with retractable landing gear - guess which kit is easy to find!) I think I will hunt out a set of engines and the resin tail and already have a set of PE radar antennae for it.

I've built 4 of these kits since they came out with a 5th in the stash that I want to hack up and take a shot at converting to a PBN Nomad.
The decal sheet in every kit was awful. The adhesive turned milky when they were saturated and there was no way I could use any of them. In fact, the decal sheet has consistently been the weak point in most-if not all the Monogram kits I've built over the years.
Also-the eyes that have been on the kit have also determined the blisters are too high on the fuselage.
