Resident evil art style was born from hardware limitations. If you don’t have a reason to limit your players exploration and interaction with your game world why would you limit it?
Horror comes in many forms, and limiting visibility (using this style) can still be very effective. The art style that RE used, with pre-rendered backgrounds, is not what I'd be going for. The idea would be to have the camera system as an effective horror technique, while keeping a higher level of interactivity in the environment. This would more just be a change in how the camera is operating and how the player is viewing the world.
I'd say first person helps to show off the look of the map better whilst set camera goes more for the nostalgic feel, honestly I'd say go for the style closer to your intended market whether it be the more old school feel for the more mature audience and horror types or the first person for the more mid to young age players as it's more common in their type of games. either way best of luck and it's nice to see someone asking for opinions to do their game right not just in their own eyes but in the eyes of their players :) hopefully you're very successful
Thanks for your comment :) Very good point with targeting specific audiences. Mine does lean more toward the older/nostalgia area, it's soooo hard targeting to younger audiences now especially with single player games. I struggled with a huge decision in my last game, and have really come to learn that hey - the community can be pretty cool and helpful!
@@stasisboothgames I'm glad you're able to find inspiration and creative help from the communities ideas, honestly a lot of communities gaming or not are much more engaged when they're taken into account not just for their wallets but for their input and enjoyment as well. I think you'll end up getting lots of awesome inspiration and fun ideas for the game and im looking forward to seeing what comes out at the end, should be lots of fun :)~p.s. single player games are always awesome
Player, user and community feedback is super important to me. Without it, my previous game wouldn't have released as it was. This is the first time asking for community input into a core gameplay feature though - while it feels weird, it's so nice to have this level of interaction :)
I'm a newer gamer while I do like the FPS approach, the Res Evil Style camera might make ur game more unique and bring more ppl in
Agreed. There's hundreds of games in first person of similar design, and doing it in resident evil inspired can void a lot of the difficulties of animating things in first person to make it look good. If you're feeling ambitious, you could work on one or the other, and see which one you prefer to work with. Who knows, procrastinating on one by working on the other can be good... just don't burn yaself out. :)
You're right - I think while both FPS and Resi Evil camera have been done *alot*, there is still some freshness to bring to it. Thanks for watching and your comment!
Thanks. Yeah FPS was a choice because it felt to me you can make the environment more interactive, but this was just when working toward a prototype for a funding application. Moving further into it, animations as you say can get very tricky to look natural, whereas with the RE inspired style you can get a way with a little more jank as it's not in your face. I'm *always* super ambitious, but running these two systems side by side will be far too much of a headache haha.
Feature creep is real
It sure is!
Fantabulous work as per usual m8! Always nice to see these updates, and that you are taking care of yourself; thereby making sure the game reaches its designated brilliance just like its predecessor 😉 👋🏻 Again, remember, my soulmate and I are here for whatever ya need👌🏻🐼🙏🏻🐻❄️💪🏻 Thanks, good day, and stay indie~
Thank you so much for watching and your support! Hopefully this game is the one ;)
@@stasisboothgames Your games have never been short of "The One". People are just blind, dumb, and or ignorant...they can't help it But yes, it will happen. Sooner than you think~
Really good devlog!! Really good job making it!! It's great to see how the game is progressing!!
Thanks, Az! I'm really happy with how it's turning out.
@@stasisboothgames You're welcome!! That is really great to hear!!
You're welcome =P I swear I can do it better though. This is great for people who want to know more about Game dev
Haha just make sure you take time for yourself too :P
You will find most people now are starting to get tired of the marketing approach that a lot of games do these days ... all hype all talk and no action. Keep doing things the way you feel is right mate! Also this is looking Awesome!
I completely agree. I was into those kinds of videos for awhile and started seeing devs disappear or abandon projects.
Good video. Spot on about the living documents. Things change all the time. You can have the vision but if theres a roadblock because of it you need to have that flexibility to change it and keep going. Ive run into plenty of problems and changed them while still keeping the new version in line with the end goal.
It's great you're able to recognize and make those changes. I've seen so many devs be so strict with their vision and the project ends up going nowhere, or has some major flaw because they can't see it or even worse, they won't listen to others valid points.
developers are better when they don't open their cringe mouths.. take Luca from Poncle. Legends still exist today just a shame most developers are pathetic groomers
Another great video! Thanks for your honesty and being transparent about what it actually takes to be a developer!! We could use more people like you!
Thank you so much for watching! I felt tired when making this, so was maybe a bit more raw than usual. Maybe that's when I should be making them haha.
Excellent update!
Thank you!
I just ran across it on GOG and bought it. Congrats on your game development journey, hope it's working out for you!
Thank you so much for buying We Are Not Alone! If you enjoy it, I'd really appreciate if you could leave a review :) Journey is going well - it's fun, but also the good kind of scary/tough.
Hey your trailer looks really good 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Glad to see your back for another devlog, excited for your new project and can’t wait to see more!!
Thank you so much!!
Love your devlogs mate
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Congratz! Lotta great news, proud of you as always...! (Athough I must say, not to make this about me- but I was a bit shocked to hear of all these new developments; being moved from the glossy internal peep to a shoddy public chump 😅. Bitterness aside. Just know i can always assist with anything. *Me and my soulmate~* Good day, and best of luck~
Thank you! Don't take it too personally, basically everyone got radio silence on what I was up to haha. I needed time alone to figure it out :) You'll be more in the loop from here on in!

I can't wait for others to play it too :)
Glad to hear the new game is well underway!
Thanks! I'm really happy with how it's going :)
Looks really good. Keep us updating with new indie vlogs :)
Thank you! Devlogs will be making a return in a few days :)
Yes!!
🥰
Nice trailer.. very atmospheric. 👍
Thank you!
You can for sure recoup the cost of Unity Pro if your game has achievements. I made a small 2D puzzle game that was sold for $10 at launch on Xbox (no launch discount) and made hundreds of sales just to achievement hunters. Only about 10% of my last game's sales came from Steam. That said, check out if you can get a "Preferred Platform License Key". Last I saw (granted this was several years ago) Sony and Nintendo offered them for free when porting to their systems so you don't need a Unity Pro license just for a console port.
It definitely has achievements 😊 Sony discontinued the preferred platform key in June - which was perfect timing haha. If I can find some more money in the next month or so, I’ll try funnel it into the ports!
@@stasisboothgames Oh no! I hadn't seen that they discontinued it. It's still worth reaching out to Playstation/Xbox reps since they might provide you with partial funding to cover it or something else. I'm not sure about Sony, but the ID@Xbox people I've talked with have been really helpful and accommodating.
Thanks, I’ll reach out to them and see what happens!
Great to see you back!! It's bad than using Unity Pro free trial for launch console port was not possible and have to be on hold... I hope you can find a way to publish them on console...
I will at some point for sure, just at the moment it’s not feasible 😊
I still dont forgive you for that video title... Glad to see that you're back
Hopefully one day I can redeem myself :P
Very authentic game dev channel , are you going to do "how much did in the first month" ?
Hey, thank you! I’m not exactly sure what the format will be coming back to devlogs. I might try a few different things. Videos will be returning shortly though, it’s been a crazy few months!
It's an appl-- 🍏
Man, I wish this game was in 1st person. Horror games should ALWAYS be in first person.
A majority of the game *is* in first person! There are times that it becomes third person as everything you view is through the lens of a camera. Oh and not always! There are lots of amazing third person horror games (RE, Silent Hill, Tormented Souls)!
This is the first one of your videos that I've watched. I love how naturally you talk about your game’s development! Watching this video feels like talking to a friend. Also the name "panic patching" is very fitting. I relate to the nightmares and dreamless nights leading up to releasing a game. In hindsight, most of that stress was unnecessary. Keep up the good work! I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos and I hope that I will talk as comfortably about my projects one day.
Thank you so much for the comment! I’m glad that’s how the video came across, I tried for many years on many other channels and it just never felt genuine. So now I just try be me :) If you’ve got a game out there let me know the title so I can check it out!
i am also done... watching this video.
Thanks for watching!
Congratz on finishing a game, it's a marathon i know myself, I don't know whats going on with your like/dislike ratio on this video, but i wish you all the best and many coverage! Because marketing i think is the hardest part of being indie..
Thanks for watching - now you've mentioned it I had a proper look at numbers and I also have no idea that's going on with that :) Marketing is tough. I've learned a LOT about it over the past year and through my tiny attempts at marketing We Are Not Alone. Hopefully it helps when it comes time to market the next game.
Just picked it up and will be playing over the weekend. Congratulations! You also kicked my butt back into the dev chair. I want to get a game across the finish line :D
Thank you for picking it up, I really hope you enjoy it! You can do this :D Message me if you have any questions or just want to chat/some motivation! (Also if you're working on anything in particular, send me a link!!)
I hate you... for the fake out in the beginning! But you redeemed yourself with the gold standard devlog after AND that solid launch!!! Your future plans sound spine-tingling but a part of me knows that (A) you are destined for great things, (B) you can pull off anything you put your mind to, and (C) every lesson you learned will guarantee you can do A & B. Sorry to hear about the patch rushes & mistimed launch date. But yeah, will remind ya next time m8. And you are welcome. Thanks also for the gig to Geoff, the VA role with the MOST number of lines thus far in my career. Until next time m8! Looking forward to more postmortem videos. *Oh and hey, one more thing. PWOUD of ya too bud~*
I couldn't resist the fake out, I'm sorry :P I can't wait to announce future plans, but they're sooooo early it could potentially bite me in the butt to announce anything at all. Thanks for all your support, and for being you (also for being Geoff) :)
Hint: Link is not in the description yet.
Fixed! Thank you so much for letting me know!
Dude you totally got me man, your such a d!ck lol 😂 congratulations
Haha sorry :P. I just couldn't resist ... as much as I hate clickbait titles.
Super insightful, congrats on the launch! Such an achievement
Thank you so much ❤️
Proud of you
Thank you 🥰
14.79$ looks meh i won't play it
😮
Thank you for your comment. Sorry to hear you don't like the look of the game, hopefully one day you will give it a go though.
@@stasisboothgamesI won't tho it is a game that has nothing to offer for me. Of course tastes are different and so are games. But as it stands the price is too high for me to gamble my money on a Indie Game
k
proud of you mate!
Thanks!
Huge. Can't wait to give it a go
I still can't wrap my head around how big it is the game has actually launched hah. I wonder how long it'll take to sink in. Hope you enjoy it when you get to play it, and that you're doing well :)
Would've been evil if the title was only the first 3 words
I was *very* tempted to do that, but I couldn't. I felt the intro was evil enough :)
I'm playing it, and the story has me hooked, very good. The trick with the cameras don't convince me because it seems unnecessary, I would prefer a camera on my back like Resident Evil 4, but it is not a big deal. The plot remind me to CONTROL: a girl who arrives at a mysterious facility in search of her brother/sister where she works as a cleaner, lol.
I watched your videos, very informative, but at the mo I bought it already on Steam, now playing, dont know which part or chapter I am playing now, but I must say, I am very impressed , The game is fantastic! I am on a investigative journey, dont know where it will end 🙂 Great job Andrew!
Thanks, Hassie! Glad to hear you’re enjoying it. Hope you like the way it ends!
I am genuinely excited about this game! I don't know if it is because I've followed its progress for some time now or whether I just love how original and truly spooky it sounds. I am not even a horror fan (I just watch and let others play while I scream in the background for extra tension and ambience), but I might get this one. :)
Thank you for following along! As I finish off the last parts of the game, comments like this really help keep the motivation up :) I don't think the game is *too* scary, and is more a different form of horror but that's coming from someone who has lived and breathed WANA for the past 14 months. Really glad to hear you might get this one!
Looking forward to getting it!
I'm looking forward to getting it out there :D
Exciting
Thanks!
Very good devlog!! Good job!! Good luck when the game releases and good luck working on the last details of the project!!
Thanks, Az! Can't believe the game is almost finished
You're more than welcome!! It's great than you arrived at the almost publishing state of the game :D @@stasisboothgames
That cat is a paid actor, I'm most convinced of that now- and I dun h8 it in the slightest XD *WELCOME BACK* M888888, I swear that just when I thought my admiration & love for you has capped out; you find ways to blow the roof!! 1) Congratz on the release date! 2) The project management thangs seem mad cool and even intimidatingly so 3) Personal life is stellar too. Interesting book. Both George and John would be proud 🌝 4) My heart was beating out of my chest when you told me bout the wasp. So glaaaad it didn't getchu!! 5) Good luck with the 9+ tasks remaining~ Always by your side! And you have another supporter by your side. I will make sure of that ;)
Thanks for watching :D Haha yeah the project management stuff could be an entire video ... I think i talked about doing one over a year ago. Thankfully I didn't because this system is amazing.
Loved the video! Another great one 🥰 well done on getting so much done and how exciting you have a release date!! Favourite parts would have been a remaster where Riley shoots first and of course the cat break ❤️❤️
Thanks so much 😊Glad you liked it!
