Welcome to my Tamiya RC journey!
As a child I always wanted a Tamiya RC car to build and drive around but my parents couldn't afford one.
Now as a 'Manchild' with my own funds, it's time to start building and driving!
I can't promise it'll always be a Tamiya, but let's see what's out there to play with!

Tamiya MF01X - Poor Boys RC Speed Run Challenge 2024 - Run 6
มุมมอง 267วันที่ผ่านมา
It's run number 6 in the @poorboysrc speed run challenge for 2024. Last time out we hit 26mph. This time we have installed a new 12t motor, a 23t pinion, adjusted the shocks and fit foams on the wheels. There was a failed attempt at run 6 where the camera only recorded half the run, the car spent a lot of time spinning through the air, we lost the battery holder and had to go back for it and th...

It's run 5 in the @poorboysrc speed run challenge for 2024. The latest upgrade for the Tamiya MF01X is a HPI Firebolt 15T motor. We've previously used this motor before in our TT02 speed run project, and it has given us a nice little boost in speed. Last time out we reached 22mph, which equals last year's top speed. Can we do better??

Tamiya TT02 Speed Run Challenge - Are the Hop Ups Worth It?
Great to have you this year! See you soon again!
Nice speed, on the seafront, with the sun as background 🤩 The handling of this car is a mystery, maybe oil shocks ? Hopefully it will be easier next year. Can't wait to see the Cooper M05 project. Take care 👏🤝
Yeah maybe the shocks were the issue with the handling. Won’t be running as a speed car anymore so I guess we’ll never know.
Nice work slowly getting there but it's not as easy as it looks to go faster. I'm running a tamiya TZ motor a 63t pinion and 25 spur gear and it's a lot faster. I have a 31 and 33T but yet to try as I need to get a speed meter first.
Nice. Just added the 63t spur but the weather here is naff. Hopefully will get another run in soon.
@@rctamiyaaddict4687 I don't have that issue here in Malaysia it's always 30 degrees Celsius 365 and if it rains it's never more than an hours or 2. I just got back from Belgium yesterday I went for work and I just happy to be warm again 😀
Such a shame you didnt break 30. Some didn't have many issues yet others spent most of the time on their roof! Looking forward to the CC02 and M chassis stuff. I'll be doing those throughout the winter too. I hope to keep one of my speed run cars and push it to see what I can get with it like you have with the TT02. Cheers for now 😊
Thank you. Yeah the car just didn’t want to stay in a straight line. It’s already been switch to a rally set up and its bumpers have been added. I’ll continue with the TT02 project car Thanks for watching and your comments. Good luck with your future builds.
It was a pleasure watching your videos
Thank you
You would probably gain more top speed if current wasn't passed through a Tamiya battery connector. If you have a non contact thermometer, read the temperature of the battery connector vs it's surroundings after a couple passes. It's going to be much warmer, heat is wasted energy. This drains your battery quicker as well.
Thank you for the advice, always welcome.
Great work, Ian. Those motors seem to be quite popular with racers these days.
That’s is true. Hopefully the weather will play nice this weekend for my final run.
That´s awesome. i tried it too. different Motor´s and gearing. now i´m using the 68T * 20T gearing, with an old school Motor. it´s a Kyosho Atom Smasher 12 Turn Motor. Rpm by 1Volt is 5200. ^^ so with 2s Lipo (8,4 Volt) it has an Idle Speed of over 40.000 RpM ^^
Awesome. Thanks for taking a look.
Catching up on vids. good stuff brother.. 👍🤙
Thanks 👍
Nice..... Great movement.. thanks for sharing 👍🤙
No problem 👍
Ftx 20t 540 motor on 3s 😊
Nothings off the table
There are so many things you can do to make it handle better, its a great chassis and endless fun.
Certainly is
Great looking mate I'm thinking of doin the same, what the did you use frog tape
Tamiya masking tape
Nice work, any improvement is good! Like Mark said I'm sure there is a 30 in there with that setup. I'd be tempted to jump to a 25 or 26t pinion as that's the biggest you can go without gearbox mods and should give at least mid 30's without too many issues.
Just want to break 30 for it final run
WHATS UP SIR!!!! Getting dark there too I see.
Been away for 2 weeks with no internet. Lovely to be cut off from the world.
That's a great speed increase but I'm sure it would crack 30 if you had been able to get another clean run in! Good job though, at least you know the motor is up to the job! :D
Thanks. Hopefully the final run in the comp with break the 30mph bar
I got the 3° towing uprights and it made a huge difference for stability
Have upgraded and got some too
29 sounds really high won’t your motor overheat?
Will have to see! It’s a learning curve
Curious, what is the Poor Boys Speed Run Challenge? Can anyone compete?
It’s a TH-cam channel that is doing a speedrun comp. Anyone can enter. Ends at the end of September.
oh wow you have found a great motor there. And it went really smooth, no wobbly driving what is the pinion/spur ?
29 pinion and 64 spur
I use a 1080 hobbywing standard Tamiya motor with standard gearing with race bearings and a 5500 120c 3s 😊 I will be upgrading to oil shocks and alloy steering next week. I have just subscribed so I will look forward to future videos.
Thank you!
This looks great, spectacular. I need to ask please because ive never painted an abs hard body shell rc car , but what preparation is needed? Specifically priming and scrubbing the body shell? Ive painted smal 1/24 and 1/25 scale model cars made from abs plastic years back and mostly used Tamiya paint and got beautiful results. But i didnt ever prime or undercoat them.
I rubbed it down with a green pad and washed it all down. Then Tamiya paints used. Used clear paint over the masking tape to try and stop bleeds seeping through. Mistakes will be made, but worst case is to start it all again.
Gaining speed! Great Job!
Thank you
Great Run!
Thank you!
Nice job, Ian!
Thank you! Cheers!
Don't rush to go brushless. Once you do, you'll never want to go back, and that'll be a shame... Enjoy the brushed challenge while you're there. There's quite a bit more you can do to get it going faster.
Not too keen on jumping over yet. Happy with what I have and winter is on its way, so no speed running
Good stuff, mate. More gearing will liven it up.
It will indeed!
Nice to see a bump in speed with the upgraded motor! Looking forward to the next run!
More to come!
Nice improvement! Looking good
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice! Great jump in speed…looking good!
Thanks! 👍
4mph gain.. Nice!
Thank you.
Good work. I'm sure there are many pinion gears in your future. Doing great, watch your temps.
Thanks, will do!
Congrats to,the improvement.
Thanks!
Good little increase there, changing one thing at a time is a good idea 👍
Thank you. Making a couple of changes though for the next run.
@@rctamiyaaddict4687 made 2 changes myself this weekend. Made a significant difference to the speed ..... but also to how straight the wheels are too 🤣
I have trouble keeping mine in a straight line.
@@rctamiyaaddict4687 think i have gpd lucky with mine as seems to be ok at the moment
Do yourself a favour and get rid of the Tamiya battery connectors. They are like in line resistors, use deans or xt60 connectors.
Thinking I’ll go deans when I switch to lipo. Thanks for taking a look and the advice.
I just put a suoer stock TZ with a 25t pinion. I have no idea what the speed is I no GPS but it's a lot faster than the tourque tune.
Ran it with an RZ and didn’t go as fast as I was expecting. Pinion got stuck on the motor. Must get around to fixing that.
@rctamiyaaddict4687 the guy at Super Rajikon said the TZ is for road and BZ is for off road. I didn't knkw that but he is the Japanese hobby shop guy so sure, he knows his stuff . At 15 quid, it was a bargain, I got so many hop ups and spare rims and tyres duty free.
Nice. Some said to me R for road, B for buggy and can’t remember what T was for
@rctamiyaaddict4687 because I had a bunch of hop ups for a TT02 when I asked for a BZ he said no a TZ is what I needed.
Hey I did wonder why Taylor Swift was on the thumbnail for a speed run 😂 I think that you got the best deal with the Sand Scorcher and a speed run in a windy car park. Nice run and I think that motor can cope with some higher gearing. Great vid 😁👍
Thanks Pete. I lucked out getting the scorcher and luckily managed to get her tickets to Taylor swift.
Great jump in speed, Ian! And how about that Sand Scorcher?!?! Tay Tay's got nothin' on that classic! :)
Thanks Fil. Just hope Taylor likes RC and her team don’t come after me for using her image lol 🤣
Nice improvement.
Thank you!
That's almost as fast as my first open run. Great Job! Car looks great.
Thanks! 👍
Still improving, that's the spirt. Keep on keeping on dude.😊😊😊
Thank you.
Nice little ramp up in speed there! I got those gears too. Loving the Sand Scorcher! Good luck with the next motor. :D
Thanks Mark. Little by little the speed is increasing!
good improvement though. Took mine apart to change the motor and forgot how small the original pinion is.
I’ve seen people boring out the plastic to get bigger pinions in
@@rctamiyaaddict4687 yes, so have I. I think the original is 16t but without cutting anything you can go up to about 25t i think it is
I have 23t pinion and a 12T motor at the moment
@@rctamiyaaddict4687 hoping to up the size of my pinions this weekend if the weather lets me 😁
Doesnt matter if its 160 mph or 16 mph a speed run is a speed run, fun, clean and runs smoothly. Doesn't get better than that.
Thank you
Nice video my friend ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ A very creative idea ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I look forward to seeing your designs. Congratulations on your journey forward
Thank you! Cheers!
That body has pretty good aerodynamics. I also use one on my TT02 speed runner! 👍
Love the body for this TT02 but just a deflating day with it today. Went out again and had GPS issues.
Keep away from those pesky curbs 😆
I now have a phobia of them 🤣🤣
You have no chance on speed run challenge as been some really fast speeds to date over 50mph
The TT02 is just an ongoing personal project, but the Poor Boys RC challenge, I know I’ll be near the bottom.
@@rctamiyaaddict4687 id go in for it but been out the rc game for 30+ years and just got back into it
Sorry sent reply to wrong one lol as not long woken up as not sleeping at night due to shoulder injury and stress due to wife operation
First comment??? Good luck on that run!
Thank you. Went out again but the GPS wasn’t working 🤦🏼♂️
Talking tyres - I have a number of TT-02 speed runners, I run Corally Attack Foams on all mine. So far they've been good to 185Kph.
I have contacts on there at the moment. The Red wheels I have started ballooning with more powerful motors
