I remember playing this as a kid without any guide. It took me awhile, but I beat it. It was very rewarding, this game does have a neat exploration factor.
Yep you are absolutely spot on; the satisfaction of figuring this game out on your own back in the day is strong. And the exploration factor is very fitting for a game about a bunch of adventuring treasure hunting kids.
You know, the cave walls in the underwater sections remind me a lot of the walls from the Dam level in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game - which makes sense since both games were developed by Konami. Just goes to show how often assets were re-used back in those days.
I live where parts of the Goonies were filmed in Oregon, and I would note that the Goonies House is, of course, still standing, though the current owners tend to be a bit cranky about people wanting to see the house. Also, there have been Mini-Cons featuring public viewings of the movie with stars, as well as Q&As.
Nice, ha and I can imagine that would get old fast having random people wanting a tour of or just to take pictures around the house. Like the Home Alone house in Chicago.
This game reminds me a lot of Friday the 13th. I think it’s the way the rooms are handled. I appreciate the anecdote about the arcade machine. There was a place where we used to camp regularly when I was a kid that had a small arcade room. I used to go for Bad Dudes and Xenophobe!
Certainly Dr. Chaos but yeah I didn't think about Friday the 13th similarity with navigating the rooms but that's true. Bad Dudes on arcade was a good time.
The Goonies 2 is absolutely one of my favorite NES games of all time. My cousin and I played it so much as kids. I remember when we finally found the diving suit. It was such a big deal lol.
Yep this one's been coming for awhile now. The soundtrack is great, especially when they nail a chiptune version of an already great song which was rare on the NES.
Love this game. Rented it half a dozen times and never finished it until emulating it later. I was one of the few people who did see the Goonies 1 in a Nintendo machine in the arcades, so I knew there was a first game. Just didn't learn it was Japan exclusive till years later. I own both Goonies games now.
I hear you. Yeah it's one of those games that you just kind of decided at some point there wasn't much beyond the early areas or so because it was too difficult to navigate, heh.
I rented and beat this one over a weekend using my trusty Official Nintendo Players Guide. These days I probably couldn't get past the first room. That 8-bit rendition of The Goonies 'Rr Good Enough is AWESOME, though.
Goonies 2 looks complicated but manageable. Worth playing once or twice and worth checking out. The positive is the game has originality. Not many games look like this.
You're absolutely right, there was nothing like this game on the NES (outside of Dr. Chaos which coincidentally came out within months of this game) which is always great and rare when you can say that.
Nice walk through, Professor. If you haven't yet, AVGN did a video on this game. And boy did the F'N Nerd put this through the ringer... Lol. I would like to point out the the pirate's name in the movie was One Eye Willie... Talk about one of the biggest d*** jokes in history and it was in a popular movie... Lmao
Ha nice. Yep it's a lovely part of the country and nice to see it get some love in the movie; I feel like there aren't a lot of movies set in the Pacific Northwest.
Lots of creators have made Goonies 2 videos over the past year for some reason. Maybe it's because the movie is approaching 40 years old, or it's the first Metroidvania game and every other Metroidvania been covered? I made a Goonies 2 video too a year ago. It's not nearly as well made as Video games 101 (or others), but yeah, seems like this game get lot of love right now. Goonies 2 was released just before Castlevania 2 so you could argue it's the first metroidvania/search action game. Great walkthrough and walkthrough, always looking forward to some VG 101.
This is weird because I remember beating this game years ago however I don't remember playing through the lava level or most of the underwater levels. Is it possible I beat it without rescuing all the Goonies? It's a fairly monotonous game even when you're making progress but I kept at it because I love the Goonies and the music is fun to listen to. It took hours of exploring and backtracking and still didn't get everything. It was one of the most satisfying experiences beating this game given the number of cryptic clues scattered everywhere, just like Castlevania 2 which I beat only using a strategy guide. I have no idea how I figured out how to get the candle. I must have gotten lucky or simply frustrated at some point. The game itself is OK, but not as good as the cover art promises.
You can't open that final door/beat it without saving all the Goonies as far as I know but there are different ways and routes to get to different places, so it's possible you didn't see some of the screens that I show in this class.
@@VideoGames101 true. The key on the final door just doesn't work. As a 7 year old, I remember making it there a few goonies short. But deduced that that door had to be the "Annie" door🤗
Given how underwhelming The Mighty Ducks series, Hocus Pocus 2, and the Home Alone sequels were, I'm pretty sure a sequel to Goonies would end up being a big disappointment. The Sandlot was my version of the Goonies and to this day haven't bothered with any of the sequels. If you want more Goonies, check out The Monster Squad which has a similar feel.
What happened to MegaMan X2? You uploaded it and then took it down. I was really looking foward to it. I hope everything is ok, nothing is going on like a strike. There better not have been a strike or everyone in the school is gonna get a hold of YT and give them a piece of our minds!!!
The game only looks fun if you know exactly where to go. Otherwise you’re hitting and hammering every single part of a room. How tedious, no thanks lol.
Ok, take two of my comments. The first time I played figuring out how to navigate between the two maps was brain-bending as the halls were confusing at first navigation. My brother gave up on the game because of it. Once my brain did bend the game was fun for me at least. Without a walk thought it was a two-week or so play thought after school.
Yeah the house is pretty massive, and although it kinda sorta makes sense the front and back, it puts your brain through some serious gymnastics as you mentioned, and either way this was a project. It generally took more than a weekend rental like some games.
Apologies for the upload issue earlier and the couple comments lost! Goonies never say die, but sometimes they say fix the video and reupload!

Good point, KRG, I didn't think about that but I can see it now that you point it out.
I live where parts of the Goonies were filmed in Oregon, and I would note that the Goonies House is, of course, still standing, though the current owners tend to be a bit cranky about people wanting to see the house. @Zero, the Astoria area is absolutely beautiful!!!!
Amazing!!!! I remember beating this game when I was like 6 or 7. Without this class, I probably couldn’t do it today!!!! Thank you, Professor!!!
I’m amazed at the games I beat as a kid without a guide but couldn’t do without one today!
Yep, some games call for a class more than others and this is certainly one of them!
Very true! A testament to the time and relative patience or maybe better said dedication we had as kids for some of these games.
This game reminds me a lot of Friday the 13th. I think it’s the way the rooms are handled. I appreciate the anecdote about the arcade machine. There was a place where we used to camp regularly when I was a kid that had a small arcade room. I used to go for Bad Dudes and Xenophobe!

Yep, I loved that feeling of getting an item which opens up huge other parts of the map to you for the first time.
Thanks for the video. This is one of my favorites from the old days
You got it, and thank you BadSeed. This was a great one to really sink your teeth into for a weekend rental.
I love old proto-metroidvania games like this and Legacy of the Wizard.
I've been hearing a lot of Legacy of the Wizard mentions as of late. Need to make that happen sooner than later!
yes please! 🙏
I was hoping you'd cover this at some point! I played a bit of this growing up but didn't make it super far. Amazing soundtrack, as you mentioned.
Yep this one's been coming for awhile now. The soundtrack is great, especially when they nail a chiptune version of an already great song which was rare on the NES.
I rented this game, and had no idea where to go. The platforming sections are fun... But I never rented it again.
I'm glad to see it beaten!
Yeah, would've been nice had the manual come with a somewhat detailed map but not the case.
Your buddies are like Schneider, Diane and Jennifer in Metal Gear - very helpful info. They should have their own transceiver frequency! 🤣
Haha most definitely. And they never go shopping!
Love this game. Rented it half a dozen times and never finished it until emulating it later. Nice. Yeah from the looks of it, it's a real shame the first Goonies didn't make it to the NES.
Such an underrated fun game. I got to where I could beat it in a little over an hour as a kid.
Nice, that's some serious memorization given the scope of the house/different areas. Plus a lot of it looks very similar, especially the rooms.
This. This was the game I was waiting for. I never figured it out.
I hear you. Yeah it's one of those games that you just kind of decided at some point there wasn't much beyond the early areas or so because it was too difficult to navigate, heh.
Another awesome lesson, thanks Prof.
Thank you Richard!
I rented and beat this one over a weekend using my trusty Official Nintendo Players Guide. These days I probably couldn't get past the first room. That 8-bit rendition of The Goonies 'Rr Good Enough is AWESOME, though.
That was the only way to beat certain games. Was having that players guide.
Ha yep, games like this definitely called for some outside assistance like the ONPG, short of putting together extremely detailed maps on your own.
Goonies 2 looks complicated but manageable. Worth playing once or twice and worth checking out. The positive is the game has originality. Not many games look like this.
The ending is super weird lol
You're absolutely right, there was nothing like this game on the NES (outside of Dr. Chaos which coincidentally came out within months of this game) which is always great and rare when you can say that.
Heh it was more than I was expecting to be honest.
Nice, been waiting for this one.
Ever since Dr. C!
Do the Golgo 13 games!! WHEEEE thank you for another video!
Great video. 😀
Thank you Capn!

Good call, Tacaskey, and haha yeah the things they "snuck" into kids movies back then.
Class is in session!
They call it the town of Goon Docks. It's Astoria, Oregon. Lol.
Ha nice. Yep it's a lovely part of the country and nice to see it get some love in the movie; I feel like there aren't a lot of movies set in the Pacific Northwest.
The angry video game nerd just did a video on this. Its really funny.
Yeah it seems like the Goonies is having a moment right now for some reason.
Yeah, I like this game but still found it one of the best episodes. AVGN has still got it.
Lots of creators have made Goonies 2 videos over the past year for some reason. Subbed
Thank you kindly EtP!
You’re my fav. Teacher. There are not fucking with my fav. Teacher!
fun fact they are talking about making a goonies 2 movie
I've long heard rumors. I don't know if it will ever happen at this point.
@VideoGames101 hopefully not given the state of Hollywood right now they would just make it unwatchable
Their are a lot of really popular movies from the 80s. Never got a sequel. It's kind of weird.
If you want more Goonies, check out The Monster Squad which has a similar feel.
does the konami code do anything in this game
It does not.
Good question but nope.
What happened to MegaMan X2? You uploaded it and then took it down. I was really looking foward to it. I hope everything is ok, nothing is going on like a strike. There better not have been a strike or everyone in the school is gonna get a hold of YT and give them a piece of our minds!!!
Every time I hear those doors open it sounds like "Lick Mah Balwz" Dan from Game Grumps
Also Up Dog
What happened to Mega Man X2???????? Plz don’t tell me they made you take it down!??????
Ha had a scheduling snafu between this game and that one; it'll go up within the next two weeks.
The game only looks fun if you know exactly where to go. Otherwise you’re hitting and hammering every single part of a room. How tedious, no thanks lol.
Yeah this game requires the patience and time reserved for a kid of the late 80's/early 90's, heh. Otherwise, a guide like this is the way to go.
Ok, take two of my comments. The first time I played figuring out how to navigate between the two maps was brain-bending as the halls were confusing at first navigation. Dr. Chaos but good
Well certainly BETTER I would have to say.
