  • Mark Cohen, author of the new Sherman biography, Overweight Sensation, introduces himself and Sherman's legendary but until now lost and never-released "Goldeneh Moments from Broadway." The Goldeneh songs are Sherman's Jewish parodies of the great Broadway show tunes. This video includes Sherman's "Jump Down, Spin Around" from My Son, The Folk Singer and a January 18, 1963, concert recording of Sherman singing "Seventy-Six Sol Cohens," his fantastic parody of "Seventy-Six Trombones" from The Music Man.

I an 68. I was brought up on these. Just as fresh and funny now as more than half a century. The crowd reaction is priceless.

My favorite song, The Streets of Miami, they mention the fountain blue and I love the reference of the whole story line.

Alan Sherman's genius shines through in both examples.

You really need to put them all out. So many gems tend to get lost due to this or that reason. I remember hearing his work when I was young and was thrilled to find them on TH-cam all these years later. Mr Sherman was a genius at parody and I, for one, appreciate learning there is more “out there”. I grew up in NYC, and although not Jewish, I understood his humor even as a young girl. I have a couple of my grandchildren coming to visit next week, and I am going to play these videos (that you so generously made available to us all) for them. Thank You! J

My cousin had a copy of "For Swinging Livers Only". I practically wore out the LP when I was 13-14. I'll listen to ANYTHING by Allan Sherman!

Share them all with the world is my vote. Your uncle was a genius. Hello Mudda is my favorite funny song, but I enjoy hearing all his songs. Thank you Mark for posting these and for finding the lost recordings!

Thanks for these! I grew up with the albums, my parents had them all--knew the words long before I understood the references!

Hey Mark, I wish my mom was still with us, she would have loved these recordings. I have her collection, but it doesn't compare to the actual shows they were taped from. I want to thank you for this, Allan Sherman was a great comedic artist and writer and I wish he was still with us today. When I saw my only show on his, on Channel 5, with Totie Fields, I was in awe of the magic he created thru humor. It's a shame those shows can't be found, or aren't available to be shown today. Who ever owns them, if there are any tape recordings, it would be so wonderful to actually see him in action once again. Bless his humor and everything he brought with it. He would probably plotz seeing that it's 2020 and he's still appreciatd by so many.

So much of my own sense of humor can be traced to Alan Sherman, I'm proud to say. Jump Down, Spin Around, in fact, has always been a particular source of joy for me. Thank you for your posts.

Please continue to release the unpublished material. I have always wished there were more of Allan's work available!

Mark, thanks for the project! It's fantastic that there is a treasure trove of unreleased material - including fully orchestrated performances - that you can share. But it's also great to hear clean, true stereo versions of the classic Warner Brothers and other commercially released material. Please include the non-Warner Bros. recordings, including the RCA Victor recording with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops.

Very excited to hear the new Sherman songs, and love that many are from my favourite musicals. Much more excited than hearing 'My Son The Folk Singer' again. I played that a million times when I was 14.
But I gotta say, these unreleased ones are lower in quality, as you'd expect. Not just the lack of orchestration and production, but Allan isn't singing as well, and he hasn't worked as hard to make sure all the lyrics are funny. And sometimes (like in Summertime) they're downright tasteless.
All the same, I'm planning to listen to every one of these goldeneh moments.

YES, I do want to read your book, and YES, I do want to hear the best of the unrealeased stuff (yes, he did write his share of clunkers as well, particularly when he tried to "broaden his base" so to speak). I know that parodies of copywrited material posed problems with permissions and/or royalties. But if they're as good as "Trombones", I'd love to hear more.

Ummm...I have heard Seventy-Six Sol Cohens at least once before (on Dr Demento, I guess), but I never had his albums and I never heard Jump Down Spin Around before. In any case, play it all.
