This Huge Painting is Often Ignored at the Louvre. Here's Why it Shouldn't Be...
The Wedding Feast at Cana is a monumental painting by Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) and was completed in the 1560s during the late Renaissance.
It's hard to imagine that you can even overlook such a large work of art but this does happen quite frequently at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
As usual at Art-Facts Videos, I explain every detail about The Wedding Feast at Cana, the painter, and its history.
I believe that this video will surely convince you to check out this painting instead of completely focusing on its world-famous neighbor.

The Honourable Mrs. Graham is one of the most famous paintings by Thomas Gainsborough and is especially interesting for its tragic backstory. Her husband likely didn't look at the portrait for over 5 ...

This painting has been discussed endlessly by art historians, but it remains a mystery what it actually means. In this video, I discuss the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck (1390-1441), one of the greatest masterpieces in art history. What appears to be a painting of a couple in a bedroom probably has a much darker meaning behind it. I discuss all the details of the work and explain why I bel...

A fascinating story on multiple levels, concisely told here.

Interesting❤
Worth checking out the The Hockney Falco thesis, advanced by artist David Hockney and physicist Charles M. Falco. 'Both argued that advances in realism and accuracy in the history of Western art since the Renaissance were primarily the result of optical instruments such as the camera obscura, camera lucida, and curved mirrors, rather than solely due to the development of artistic technique and skill. Nineteenth-century artists' use of photography had been well documented.'
That's interesting thanks for sharing! One artist who almost certainly used a camera obscura was Johannes Vermeer during the 17th century. I would be quite amazing that Jan van Eyck already used such a device more than two centuries earlier!
The story is interesting, and I like the details but please those sound affects are jarring and very loud !
Good video, interesting, but I don't like the 'whoosh' sound effects or the camera clicks.
Great and thanks for the review!
A very good and interesting video, thank you!
Thank you!
Have an art history minor. Studied the Renaissance under Thomas Martin. I've always thought all of van Eyck heads resemble eggs. A whole world of Humpty-Dumpty's!
I'm one of those doinks who goes over high-quality plates in books with a magnifying glass. I had noticed the scenes from the Passion surrounding the mirror were in an unusual order. Generally, the earliest scene -- in this case, Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, complete with Peter, James, and John snoozing at the right -- would appear at the top of a circle. Here, however, it's at the bottom, and the scene of the actual Crucifixion is at the top. I thought, "Hmm. I wonder why van Eyck made such a choice?" Your explanation makes absolute sense. I also had noted the single lit candle. When one appears in a painting, it usually indicates the presence of God. In this case, four of the sockets in the chandelier are completely empty, while the one over the woman's head has little dribbles of dried wax left from the candle guttering out. I'd never noticed the dried white wax. My eye skimmed right over it, and my brain chalked it up to daylight reflecting off the brightly-polished brass. Here again, your explanation clarifies the meaning of the picture. So many things add up better.
This is my all time favorite portrait. Saw it first in college and loved it for over 50 years. Imagine: it's 600 years old! I have seen in another video how monks could paint small features: they used a small glass vial filled with water. It definitely works as a magnifying glass. The young man must have loved her very much. He looks so subdued.
Yes it'll be 600 years in about a decade, quite astonishing!
informative , thank you!!
Several years ago, a female art critic brought up all these points and I believe she was the first to notice all the symbolism. I agree with this perspective.
Yes this was in the early 21st century, not too long after it was discovered that Arnolfini only married his second wife in 1447. Only then could all the dots be connected.
Meg Koerner was (seemingly) the first to put this theory forward in 2006 in the BBC documentary 'Northern Art' - which happened to have been written and presented by her husband, Leo Koerner. She was again featured by Waldemar Januszczak in his series Art Mysteries. Waldemar also seems to agree with the theory.
@@mafru2 Yes, that’s the presentation I saw. I agreed that Koerner made some good points.
Those blossoms look like fruit to me
I have always felt that The velvet chest on the far wall below the mirror, obscured by the subjects bodies, was a cradle for a baby. When I was a child, everyone said that she was not pregnant, it was just fashion as it was a wedding photo. Then I heard it was during times of plague so getting married pregnant would show fertility. Then I heard that she was pregnant and it was a family portrait. But I like your idea the most. It would also explain the cradle being partially hidden.
Excellent point about the cradle.
Now that you mention it, this is indeed likely the case. The hidden cradle indeed fits with this theory!
Does anyone else think he looks a bit like Putin?
There's indeed some resemblance, especially the arrogant stare.
I believe in the memorial theory as well. The details discussed match this theory, and I watched with interest, tough the cartoon interruptions were not to my liking. Thank you for the tutorial, anyway.
Thanks I appreciate the review!
I agree. They ruined what could have been a really fascinating video.
Brilliant painting and discourse. Thank you. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating, thanks for sharing!
Thanks glad you liked it!
I believe this was a momento mori for the death of ArnolFini's wife in childbirth.
Yes that's indeed the most logical theory. 🙂
Ooo0oO
The wife isn't portrayed as realistic as the husband. She appears to be more stylized.
When you look at it at the British National Gallery, it's shocking how small it is. From the viewing point, it's impossible to see the details.
Yes it's really incredible! Jan van Eyck has larger paintings as well and they feature the same level of details, truly amazing!
Yeah, I have seen it too, it's absolutely breathtaking. I could be forever British National Gallery anyway.
Excellent analysis! Thank you for posting.
