  • The Belfry of Ghent, also known as the Belfort, is a medieval bell tower located in the heart of Ghent, Belgium. It is one of the three iconic towers of Ghent, along with Saint Bavo's Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church. The Belfry is part of the Belfries of Belgium and France, a group of 56 historical buildings that includes bell towers in various cities.
Construction of the Belfry of Ghent began in the 14th century, and it was completed in 1380. The tower stands at a height of 91 meters (298 feet) and has a prominent position in the city's skyline. It served both as a bell tower to announce the time and various events and as a symbol of the city's prosperity and autonomy.
The Belfry of Ghent is notable for its architecture, with a blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles. It features a dragon-shaped weather vane on top, known as the "Dragon of Ghent." Visitors can climb the tower to enjoy panoramic views of the city, but be prepared for a steep ascent with a narrow spiral staircase.
In 1999, the Belfry of Ghent, along with the historic center of Ghent, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Belfries of Belgium and France group. This recognition highlights the cultural and historical significance of these medieval bell towers in the development of civic and municipal architecture in the region.
