I have a love/hate relationship with Brian Bolland... He's always been my favourite artist since blowing my mind with his mind blowing talent. But I will never forgive him for making me realize I would never be as good as him. What makes it worse is that it's all done with a brush!! It just isn't fair... Another great review Andrew. 🤘
I don't think I would dislike him for being so much more talented than me, there are zillions of artists who are better than me (though I think I can draw and paint and design reasonably well). It is wonderful that we have so many talented people around to enjoy. Yes, his brush work is stunning - glad you liked the review
Obviously I don't really hate him 😊 But I find his work so fantastic, so unbelievable, that I really can't get my head around how he does it! There isn't a single line he draws that's out of place. It's magical to me, and I feel if I could draw like that I would never stop drawing. It amazes me when I see his interviews, just how humble and likeable he is. Out of all the Frazetta's, the Kirby's, the Byrne's, the Boris's, the Wrightson's etc.... Bolland will always be my all time fave! 🙂
I got my copy today and couldn't be happier with it. What an artist! He just made an effort with everything he ever drew. I also like watching the insightful interviews with him available on TH-cam. One of the few artists who seldom used whiteout and would rather draw a million dots and colour everything around them black. Total commitment. His book "The Art of Brian Bolland" is also great. Thanks for the video, Andrew. It is much appreciated.
Yes, seen "art of brian bolland', excellent book. Definitely one of the best artists in the comic world. Glad you love the Masterpiece edition also. Andrew
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews It's interesting that for decades he drew with such exacting perfection using completely organic tools (mostly a brush!) but over the past years transitioned seamlessly to more digital drawing. I will say though that you can see a little bit of adverse effect from the more recent digital work, as it loses subtle elements of the organic look. Someone even mentioned on my poll that a Batman cover looked like "AI", which is a tragic issue that will only grow larger with time.
Sadly, no more physical originals anymore...😢 I saw an interview with him where he said he sold his "Killing Joke" pages for £70 each back in the eighties...😮 There are some very lucky sods out there! I wonder if I offered him £75 he would pick his pencil up and do me a picture? We can dream can't we? 😊
@@MarkFletcher-c7w I don't even want to speculate on how much the OA for a Killing Joke cover goes for now. It's such an interesting choice for artists, as to whether to go digital or not when considering the enormous prices for original art. I know digital allows them to work faster and be more productive, but it just seems that one OA cover Bolland could produce right now would probably sell for more than what he gets paid to do 5-10 covers digitally, that he would want to keep producing originals. I'm sure he has good reasons and I do admire the ability of artists to make these huge adjustments to their process after doing it one way for decades. That sort of adaptability is impressive.
I think most art will end up as AI, comic covers are probably already happening, I am not a fan of AI but I guess it is easy to type in 'Judge Dredd battles a fish and wears a silly hat and says x or y and in the style of Brian Bolland and Dave McKean ... and you have an instant cover over paying someone for that or not getting what you want from an artist.
Hope it comes quick enough. It has been a long wait for the book but it is worth it. I think up there as one of the best 'artisan / masterpiece' volumes

There is a 2000 AD ART OF MICK MCMAHON APEX EDITION HC and also a 2000 AD ART OF KEVIN O`NEILL APEX ED HC apparently available, so perhaps a masterpiece edition. As to artists I would love to see with an artisan edition, that would be Gil Kane, Bill everett, Mort Meskin, any EC artist etc

Coincidentally I just ran a cover poll of Bolland covers yesterday. I was surprised to come across a somewhat recent one he did for Barbarella.
Oh, must look out for the Barbarella one. He has done some amazing covers over the years
