Starting Hurricane 5389, Part 2
มุมมอง 1.5K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Oct 4, 2019. Calgary Mosquito Society's second attempt to start Hurricane 5389 after a 6 year long restoration. Coaxing a 77 year old engine back to life is not an event, but a process. This one felt like having 5 out of 6 numbers on the winning lottery ticket. Stay tuned!

Calgary Mosquito Society's first attempt to fire up Hurricane 5389 after a 6 year long restoration. Sept 26, 2019. The 'delightful' noise at the end was the shaft for the handcrank starter. Two shots of oil and no more noise.

    At 1:32 is my Father Jim Living - Jim died June 25th 2024 and his time with Spartan Air was a a big part of his early life and had many stories from the adventures he had while with them. He will be sorely missed.

    Hurricanes apparantly were easier/quicker to repair as they were of metal and fabric construction and could take more punishment than the all metal Spitfire. My Grandfather was a specialist ground crew member in 'fabric' repairs on Hurricanes. Lest we forget them all. Nuff said.

    The Canadians were great soldiers and pilots in WWII. I had uncles in WWII, New Zealanders, one flying Hurricanes and P47s in the RAF and the other a tank driver in North Africa and Italy. They always had great things to say about the Canadians. Cheers from NZ.

    Over 2000 Polish engenires was employed in 1939 / 1940 by Havilland in Canada to create mosqito because in Poland before WWII was bigest factory of playwood in the world and we have design lots of new type of playwoods used also in Mosquito . It mean its fully Polish project and design because noone could expect that plane like this can fly that fast but we had experience in Poland before the war to build planes like this for mostly sport pourpouse....and now noobody even speak that it was our invention , same like metal detector , buletproof jacket, bluelaser, , fiberglass for data , vitamins , railway steell, welding constractions , method of grouth minerals used for create processors , and many more ,... yes you speak about Havilland and the others .....tell about real creators and inventors from Poland ....really sad

    Lame! ... No discussion on neither the Japanese or Italian (nor French) [WWII] warplanes[?]! Perhaps the title to this presentation should have been adjusted more to [suit] both the narrator's and host's lack of general knowledge concerning the [broad] title's topic. And at 0:47: the reference to 'Iron Cross[?]' ... 'What[?]' - so did 'they' in fact just emblazon 'blown-up' Iron Crosses to all their warplanes then? (for *_"Christ's_* sakes!") ... The correct [German] term 'there' is, _'Balkenkreuz'_ (Balk [or Beam/Bar] cross) - there is simply no other better (English translation) term in describing the WWII-era Luftwaffe emblematic insignia; and use of the [all-encompassing] term, 'roundel', is perhaps entirely inaccurate (or inappropriate) here as well ... Just so you all know - when/if you decide to upload any more such content in the future.

    My Dad was a Navigator for Spartan Air and flew with them both in Canada and Columbia. He later went on to work on the Apollo program and helped put a man on the moon.

  • @conallmarley
    @conallmarley 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    My Northern Irish born Father, Eugene Ignatius Marley (deceased), was a navigator for Spartan Air Services back in the early 50's. He was born in '28 and joined the Merchant Marines at 17, soon after WWII ended. He gradually worked his way up to Navigator on sea-going vessels. He skipped ship in Cuba in '53 (as the story goes) and emigrated to Canada. He went to school in Nova Scotia and Montreal and in the summers he lived and worked north of the Artic Circle and made his contribution to the maps mentioned in this video as a Navigator with Spartan Air Services. He married my Mom, then a stewardess with Air Canada, and they spent their first year together in Delft, The Netherlands, where he went to school to learn how to transform those aerial photographs into topographical maps using an instrument known as a stereoplotter. I believe that Spartan Air subsidized that schooling and he returned to work for them after graduation. Another opportunity presented itself once President John F Kennedy proclaimed the goal of putting a man on the moon and my Dad was hired by the man that made the original flight simulator, Edwin A. Link. My parents, older sister and I were awarded American Citizenship and moved to Binghamton, NY. Dad worked on the simulator for the lunar lander. He transformed the information contained within the photos from previous Apollo missions into topographical maps of the moon so that the mission planners and astronauts on Apollo 11 had elevations to go along with those pictures for simulated landings. The Mosquito was a huge part of his growth path!

    Re the coolers in the leading edge of the wings, does this design kill any lift in this part of the wings? Is all aerodynamic activity performed outboard of the engines? What's going on when I look up at a A380 going over my house, it has got moveable parts on the wings between the engines. Please advise.

    • @calgarymosquitosociety2061
      @calgarymosquitosociety2061 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, there is some loss of lift because of the irregular leading edge shape, but not a significant amount. What you are seeing on the 380 and most other airliners is a leading edge slat to increase lift at slow speeds.

    Unbelievably beautiful machine. I saw the last flying example in the UK at Old Warden airfield, on a flying day for the Shuttleworth Collection in about 1984, maybe 85. It went edge on, wing tip about 20 feet off the grass, right down the airfield at about 250mph!!! Then flew up and away, to return for a low pass, even faster, level flight, about 10 feet off the deck!!!! The old boys just said, 'He's throwing it about a bit '!!!! That was it for me!!! A near 50 yr old wooden plane doing THAT!!!! Amazing!!! Can't wait to see our new old girl flying again, thanks to The People's Mosquito Project!!

    Super Wabbit got under my skin, the crew went down. I do want to say it was due mostly because they were ordered to remove their nose art from their B-29, and they were not the only ones ordered to remove nose art, that also met with terrible fates, after they lost their Magic, their good Ju-Ju.

    Even with this and similar footage, a certain WW2 history channel still said the Mosquito used a metal framework inside the fuselage in the style of Hurricane. And the person who said it is a big fan of the Mosquito. Unfortunately this is how falsehoods get started.

    The americans abandoned color on their heavy bombers due to weight not a casual disregard for the enemy. this is especially true for the B-29 where they were doing all they could to reduce the weight to increase range and it was found the paint covering the entire skin made a considerable difference.

    The one thing that you miss out is that De Havilland were experienced at designing and building wooden aeroplanes. The DH88 Comet that won the England -Australia air race was wood. The beautiful Albatross mail plane was wood and used many of the techniques passed on to the Mosquito design. It was a natural decision for them to build a high speed high altitude plane from wood.

    • @neiloflongbeck5705
      @neiloflongbeck5705 ปีที่แล้ว

      They've missed out more than that. They've also lied about who came up with the concept of the fast unarmed bomber - that was George Volkert of Handley Page.
