My First O Gauge Layout - Build Series - Overview
I see this is a year old but you said you don’t have much experience with scenery Woodland scenics has learning kits I’m gonna try them cuz I haven’t done scenery at all
Hi, just got this train and realized that to only make sound. I’m using Lionel conventional control. Do u know what could be wrong with it. Do I need a better controller?
I hope you haven’t given up on your upper level with the single liinking track. If you install the remote control Fastrack switches on both ends, that will solve your problems. These switches have a built in auto alignment feature. They switch when an engine approach an align correctly automatically. You don’t even need to install the controllers. I have the same situation on my overhead setup in my basement it’s been performing flawlessly for over 13 years. I haven’t had a single derailment . I don’t know what system your running, if you are applying a constant 18 volts to the track and are using TMCC, LEGACY, OR MTH DCS. You automatically have enough voltage to fire the switches. If you’re running conventional power. Where you control the trains with the transformer , you need to supply a constant 18 volts to the switches. The instructions that come with the switches tell you how to do that. That should solve your problems and make running trains on the upper level trouble free.
The FT 036 turnouts can operate fine on 14v. They can be wired for constant power, separate from track running power. However I’ve had issues with this and ruined a switch, the problem is hit and mis in manufacturing. If you don’t want the frustration, yes use the ‘dog bone’. I also understand the FT 048 turnouts don’t have the issues the 036 switches have.
If your looking for some trains I recommend The Thomas range but they are rare now menards or the Lionel Santa Fe super chief starter set
What is the size of W and L ?
16’ x 5.5’
Thank for reply
Here’s a recommendation. Instead of getting manual switches, replace them with the remote control ones. In my experience, manual switches always cause issues.
Quick question, how big is this layout in feet? I want to make a layout for my dad and this seems to be a good size.
16’x5’
I just bought a Lionel O gauge starter set (Union Pacific) and almost didn’t because of how cheesy I thought the track looks. It’s supposed to arrive tomorrow. I’m really disappointed in the fast track but I’ve seen others who paint the rails and added ballast, similar to what you did here, and it makes all the difference. Nice job! 👍
I would keep the upper level just use a trolly car to back and forth
I love it!
WoW! A fifty car train? Now that was impressive. Thanks for posting this.
I went on this railroad but I went in the 486
I'd keep the upper loops and just run conventional engines, you can use it for older Lionel, Marx, or American Flyer engines. You could also just remove the switches and put a couple bumpers on the ends and run a trolley. The dogbone would cover your bottom tracks and wouldn't look as good.
I've never seen a Atlantic hauling freight in any gauge or and game
Your problem baffles me. Your switches are manual and your operation is center rail one connection and outside rail the other connection. Now if your switches have a electrical problem due to the track design, or a combination of that and the design problem of your engines that got stuck. But one of the large issues of the remote train is that the track has to be fully or almost fully powered with 18-25 volts, and enough amperage to run all of your trains. So any derailment or track connection problem has the possible surge of the full amperage and 18-25 volts. Now as for the MTH electronic systems. With my recent experience with them I find they get scrambled too easily. But it is possible a MTH shop might have a way to de-scramble your MTH engine's system instead of replacing it. Also check the batteries in them if the battery will no longer hold a charge, or it is run down they will not run.
I hate that it does one chuff when it should be doing four at the beginning :/
Nice
Looking good. For walls inside your tunnel, you don’t need a lot of 3D detail and ail, so I would print stone walls from the internet and then glue them to foam board cut to your tunnel dimensions.
The triplex is a tank locomotive.
Дякую за відео. Яке чудо. Мира і счастья всім людям які проти війни в Україні.

I am thinking about putting something like this together this winter. Would you recommend going with a Lionel Starter set? Anything you would do differently?
When I start over, I will be using atlas track instead of Lionel. As for starter sets, I think they are great and have had no issues with them. Comes with everything you need especially the Bluetooth models.
@@triplertrains Do all of the tracks work with any train, or do you need Lionel track for Lionel trains. Are you going to Atlas as it is better quality?
Yes you can run any 3 rail O gauge train on any 3 rail O gauge track. Fastrack is great for quick setups / usability. Atlas is more realistic and appealing but more expensive.
@@triplertrains Yeah, I can tell getting into model railroading will get expensive and there will be upgrades. 😄 I collect vintage baseball cards going all the way back to the turn of the 18th/19th century. I’ve got that collectors gene if you know what I mean.
Like the Big Boy in Rio Grand colors
Why does the tender have drive wheels?
Rio Grand had Challengers not Big Boys.
Awesome video
I think it's frying due to a lack of ground... OR that the Circuit is incomplete sense it loops into itself
Think about this for a while your have the spirt of 76 running next to the triplex generation apart from each other my loard I'm getting old lol
The issue I believe is that you are using steam engines on the upper loop. The front wheels don't have enough weight to throw the switch. I've had this issue too. It's derailing probably and shorting out. Do yourself a favor and get a second 4 amp inline thermal fuse because the MTH Z1000 built in thermal fuse is too slow to react. And just use a heavy diesel on the top
I believe you’re correct with the steam engine wheels
Perfect! 👍👍👍
Do you like the 765 or the 1225 better though? 😂🤠
The Atlantic is so cool! 😀
Nice progress think about double stack con trainers are 8" tall another road block just saying happy railroading look forward to your next video thanks for sharing
It’s easy to get discouraged sometimes. I would be bummed out by frying two engines as well. I would recommend you keep the track plan but fix the switches and invest in a better circuit breaker. Your layout looks great!
Get rid of the fast-track switches. I would purchase Ross switches. Another option is to go to Atlas track, their switches are very reliable.
I like the idea of the dogbone upper loop. Would be great for passenger operation. I toy with the idea of using switches in the same scenario but for the price just buy more track. Great layout in general and my only critique would be that your switching operations and spurs are toward the center/back of the layout. Hard to reach especially if you are running a couple trains on the outer loops. Otherwise love the layout and my thought is more trains running = more to enjoy. Move forward, carry on!
Do a Dogbone and keep the upper level. I DO NOT like Lionel FastTrack. Not a Fan.
Keep the upper loop. My whole layout is a reversing dog-bone pretty much, and I wouldn’t be able to get away from that design because I really like it. I am not familiar with any fast track switch, but I had realtrack switches and those things would hold up almost anything that went through it except my diesels. It never caused damage though. My mth z4000 doesn’t trip immediately. I think it’s time to decide if you want to keep trusting those switches or not. There are other companies out there to consider. Also, I have 2 of those mth engines that I can pop the shell off and get you a ps2 part number if you need it. Just let me know.
Take your switches out and make it a loop. Like a double main line on the bridge. Save the headaches
I would highly recommend a dog bone! No switches highly dependable, and you can run really long trains. Don’t get discouraged keep moving forward!
Looking at doing the same thing so I don’t need switches … do you have any plans for track needed to make an O-36 dog bone loops so that I can use a double track bridge
@@OscalemanYou can download track planning software and just use the free version to design it so that you know exactly what pieces and the size of the layout you will need to do it. If I get some free time, I will play around with it with mine. I use Any Rail but that’s not free.
Looks like you have the same manual switches on the lower level. Did those trains run ok on the lower level?
The steamers ran ok but not as reliably as the diesel.
Then what's different about the upper switches? If the lower level did not fry them something other than 8 inches higher is wrong. I would keep the upper and just change the switches to remote ones. You can find them used for 60 or 70 bucks each. Then sell the manual ones.
My first question would what transformer are you using. The breaker should throw before damage.
Lionel wall wort
How are your engines being fried? Does your power supply not have circuit protection?
Using the Lionel wall wart
Wow, I thought those had circuit protection. I don’t remember frying any engines when I used those. You may have a bad wall wart. You may want to get a CW80. Something with circuit protection. How is the top track powered? Do you have a terminal track with the wall wart plugged in?
FT electric switches should help. They are made with this kinda configuration in mind.
I like what you did with trackwork on the upper level. I honestly do not know what is going on with the switches. I know how it feels to have issues like this arise and then your motivation is adversely affected. This too shall pass and you will go into "train season" just fine. I will be at York as well.
You did not say what kind of transformer you were using and where you have it connected to the track. I have a reversing loop using (3) wall warts, (1) in the middle with (2) blocks right before the switches and (1) wall wart right after the block before the switches on each side. You cannot run conventional on it .but it does work well with no power drops .It's also inexpensive if you have any wall warts left over from starter sets.
Using wall wart
If you are using more than one wall wart, make sure than are blocked from each other.
fI
If you'r using a wall wart how are you able to run conventional.
Lose the fast track go with Atlas or gargraves
My layout is three dogbones, great for long trains.
I volunteer for a seasonal train set-up. One solution might be using a non-manual switch, getting the wires from it, and have sensors on the track that would switch the switches before it goes over it. It can definitely take time and you need to do a lot of coding, but it does pay off.
Your transformer may not have a quick enough circuit breaker to protect your engines. You may be able to add one or a fuse to the output of your transformer.
Get another bridge and double up the back . Keep the upper level for sure.
