Simple Woods Life
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 มิ.ย. 2022
I'm just a fella trying to figure out life in the woods and avoid any kerfuffle along the way.
As a creative who's spent 25 years running agencies and studios in Toronto, I've since gone freelance and moved to the forest with my wife who hails from a tiny little drinking town with a fishing problem, in Northern-er Ontario.
While I'm doing my best trying to figure out this simple living thing... it's anything but.
Thank you for your support!

All donations are invested back into making content for the channel while in tandem doing my best to not get injured, maimed or eaten in the woods.
My wife loves the cabin life and the coziness of it all, doesn't care for the dirt, smoke and potential for danger the outdoors has to offer, so it's a treat when she joins me for some of my shenanigans - keep an eye out for her!

24 hour solo camp, hike, fire cooking & paddle-palooza!
I'm out of our wilderness and into another for a chilly but lovely autumn camp, hike, paddle and feast. Surrounded by nature, covered with the Beaver Moon and doing my best to avoid the Samsquanch.
Ventured about an hour and change from the lodge to re-charge the batteries and hang out with the loons, pine martens and red squirrels. It was a lovely adventure complete with some Oktoberfest delights, a sausagey breakfast and the saddest boxing fight I've ever had the displeasure of sitting through.
Also, I miss my Dixie girl very much.

Not sure if this is the way to be dealing with loss. It's a rather personal story of grief, trying to come to terms with losing our Dixie girl this past weekend. We lost our best friend, our hearts are shattered and we're all gutted. 🤍 - Thank you very much for taking the time to support my channel with your views and those clicks of that lovely like button! A super rare & discontinued Coleman stove is fun!
มุมมอง 1.7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
The weather is at it again, so we're back with Coleman stoves! This time a vintage, rare, super neat Coleman that was passed down to me from my Grandfather. There's a few of these online, but not the way I've got it setup... and because of that, we're going to see if we can't get it running, not set ourselves on fire and perhaps have a spot of tea, as a toast to my Grandparents. Hope you dig th...

Wilderness adventure? Late summer doesn't mean winter, so ATV camp-outs galore! Open fire cooking, listening to "the dogs that sing", quad rides through the bush, gorgeous constellations overhead plus a special treat for the trip... This is relaxing time, taking it slow and easy (other than on the quad). This was an amazing adventure. Hope you dig it! Big props to @dischoutdoors for the charcut...
Forest garden failure? Potato harvest & season roundup!
มุมมอง 299หลายเดือนก่อน
Failure? Well it's been a summer in the garden folks, perhaps a disastrous one at that. But, onwards and upwards! We've had some amazing harvests along the way, learned lots, but lots to learn, and clearly some updates to the garden are needed for 2025. Today's about harvesting potatoes, running down the season we had, and singing one of the best songs that's ever been sung, about our friend th...

Hey Jay, love your passion for camping. You always put a lot of time and preparation into each trip. The scenery is very nice but the problem with public parks is too much of the public shows up😅 though I'm so glad we have them. Nice video Jay!!
Thanks Joe! I do love camping, always mean to go for more than just the day lol. I might venture further into Algonquin next summer, but everyone has the camping bug now so it's tough to really get out there without someone being around. Lots of Crown Land nearby too so way less people out there (but also why I also built a campsite in our forest 🤪). Totally agree that our public forests are important, such wonderful spots (even if they get a touch loud).
I’m terribly sorry to hear that you lost your fur child. I just found your channel and I’m glad I did. I have a 7 year old pit that is my world. I know this time is going to come and I cry when I think about it. Stay strong sir. You gave her a great life. She will be waiting for you when your time comes. That’s the only thought that brings me out of my fog when I get that way. God bless!
I really do appreciate the kind words. 🙏 I remember watching Neil deGrasse Tyson and he said something like "dogs have an equivalent life ratio to humans of 7 to 1. A day is equivalent to one week." Which always made me try to make the moments count. It's never easy to think about the end, so always tried to focus on the moments. What's your pups name? My wife is obsessed with "pibbles in jammies" and follows a number of IG accounts with those gorgeous little doggos. While the breed is technically 'banned' in Ontario here (ridiculous), I still see them around and always ask to meet one. Have never come across any of these little babies that are anything but the kindest, sweetest, goodest pup. Our Dixie was a "marked breed" and we used to watch people walk the other way when they saw her, which was their loss as she had a heart as big as gold and loved her snuggs. No bad dogs, just bad owners. Thank you again for the kind words, I know she's still with us in spirit, give your furbaby a scratch behind the ears from us!
Love this video. Canada has done a great job with their park system. Glad to see someone out enjoying it. I’m from Florida US. I would love to see your beautiful country someday
Thank you for watching, love that you dug the video! Totally agree our Provincial Parks have done a great job in land protection and enjoyment. There's six classifications up here from recreational to wilderness, and the one I was just in is classified 'natural environment' which has been getting a little more 'recreational' with the campers lately 🤪 That said, they've been adding a lot of walk-in sites where you park and hike your gear into place, so it gets a touch more woodsy... 95% of the campground is closed now for the winter so I couldn't get into those spots for camping. Hope you do get the chance to come up here one day!
So good to see you back J-Dawg!!!!👍 I so remember camping up at the Adirondacks and this bearded dude would going around in his chevy pickup selling fire wood! Such a memory! So agree about etiquette!!! Ya know, the going out , but there's always coming back! Lol
Thank you! The wood is such a lost art, these overpriced bags that aren't even seasoned sold to protect us by "not moving wood" however are shipped from far away... ugh. I'd rather support a small woodlot nearby or someone selling out of a truck than the park silliness. That said, if that's my only complaint about a place we're still doing well! Etiquette for sure. Camping is one of those things that should be personal-space sacred.
Wonderful J, the sunset at the lake was gorgeous, and good ole Keith's from Halifax, been awhile, enjoyed the video and glad to see you out, I am glad I didn't get caught up in that fight hype, heard from many it was disappointment. Thanks for the tour of the park.
Hiya! It's a beautiful spot - I've laid on that dock and watched the milky way for hours in the past, would love to timelapse up there but would need to head out on a new moon for that. I did hear a pretty interesting POV on the fight; that even though the chucklehead went toe to toe with Tyson and landed more punches so won technically, he actually didn't do a thing to Iron Mike. No injuries or damage, certainly not the knockout he thought he'd get. So a 31 year age gap with Tyson clearly old and tired (although in great shape), his reputation as tough stands and he's up 20 milly now. Mind you, it was still sad to watch 🤣🤣
@simplewoodslife Yes your night shots are awesome and would be awesome timelapse to see.💛👍
Hey Jay, welcome back, missed ya! Sorry for your loss of Dixie, she was certainly loved❤
Thanks so much! She was (and is) loved so much, she was truly one of a kind! Keeping on keeping on, and trying to get back into the swing of things for sure!
@simplewoodslife ❤️
nice video...reminds me of the Adirondacks....love paddling.
Thank you! The Adirondacks; camping there is on my bucket list for sure. Given the distance I might have to rent a little trailer or something for that trip lol.
Great to see you back Jay,not good for fall camping here in Cape breton.i think I saw the sun twice in two weeks, nothing but rain and a storm coming on the weekend
From what I've heard, Cape Breton's weather is no joke! My wife says that's the kind of rain I'd love lol. I like it on the tin roof at night, but I'd sure love to see a touch more sun than you're getting. Is there at least a glimmer of a break even in the 14 day forecast?
Well i headed to a near by town today to pick up some things and a little bit of pine at the orange store and the roads were flooded so bad i turned around and came home but now its 8 pm and no rain and the wind subsided so heres hoping lol@simplewoodslife
Glad to see your doing ok my friend. Nice video beautiful place to camp. The Clamato is the bomb and my favorite. Got hooked on it last year at fish camp. Love it. Found it down here at Walmart. Sandwich look awesome as well.
Hi Chris, thanks for watching! That campground is one of my favourites, although it's busier every-time I go - too many people finding out about it lol. 😂 The Clamato is a dangerous treat - one day Ms. Lady and I were lounging in the back woods and she had at least four Caesars, spent the rest of the afternoon poking her hand watching it go white blanching (don't look at the sodium content if you ever want to enjoy it again 🤪) Cheers!
@@simplewoodslife lol it definitely is a dangerous treat. Tell Mrs. Lady we said hello.
Hey J! It's good to know Canada, has wonderful yet crappy public campsites too🌲 and dude, for the love of Jebus put some ice (and vodka )in that bloody Mary thing you made.😅.... If and when we ever cross paths, we'll camp and swap stories of OUR great dogs that have passed... R.I.P. Dixie. ❤ Keep on camping man.
No worries Ryan, the can has the vodka in it!😂😂 It's supposed to have all the fixin's too but we need to up the spices and sauces. Oh the public campground, I hear you. Always love watchin' your wild camps, have my eye on a few spots on Crown Land for next year that shouldn't contain anyone - or maybe something deep into Algonquin, but even then there's always some moron with a radio. I love the idea of sharing stories about great dogs, you bring some squeeze cheese and I'll bring some Moosehead!
beautiful trip, im the same way when i get home, gotta unpack it all right away. best part is that last cold drink thats left when you get in the driveway.
Thanks man! I feel you on that unpacking rush, it's like getting back to normal (and if I get lazy and don't it really makes sure I won't relax until I do). I totally know that last cold drink feeling, the BEST!!
Watching this video, I learned of your loss and I then watched your last video about Dixie. I'm a 60 yr old man who cried like a baby hearing the story. I've been there friend. It hurts like hell. God bless you and your family. And take comfort knowing you gave Dixie the best life a dog could have.
Thank you for watching, hope you enjoyed the camping! Your kind words mean a lot too, it's been a month now and I still expect to see her around every corner. She had an amazing life, and so glad her suffering was minimal, I know time lessens the pain, and my heart goes out to you for any of your furry friends you've had with you and left. It's really quite cruel how little time they have with us, but I wouldn't trade it for a moment. ❤️
do you happen to know the size of the two bolts that are used to attach the burners? mine sheared off while taking apart / cleaning 🫣
I don't know off hand but I did google up the parts manual this morning, and found out the 2X screws are part number"1022B1022" - (s7d1.scene7.com/is/content/Coleman/Canada/Product%20Manuals/5430A700_STOVE.pdf) - It seems they also go by the name "Burner Screw, NOS E1571" on the Old Coleman Parts website, but they're still the same specs for part name. I'd bet if you brought the piece into a hardware store sheared or not, they'd be able to match it for you, or keep an eye on marketplace for folks getting rid of a 5430 and use it as a parts stove? I'm kicking myself for not doing that with one I saw this summer for $25. Hope that helps?
We had a doberman before Cutter. We were fortunate enough to have him for almost 14 years. You are not wrong in saying dobermans are special. Weve never had a dog like him. He was our children's protector and playmate. He was no less than a brother to them. We were all devastated when we lost him. Our hearts go out to you and Ms. Lady. ❤
We didn't help out with the camping because you didn't share the campcuterie or the tacos! Sorry I am a few videos behind because for some reason TH-cam unsubscribed me from your channel and I just realized it today.
Glad to see you didn't leave! S'pose I'll have to be more vocal about the campcuterie plans from now on 🤪
There are 2 types of strawberry plants. Ever bearing and June bearing. The first is best for munching throughout the year and the June bearing is for a large mass for canning and preserves.
I did not know this... man, such a newbie over here. 🙃
Hey Jay so sorry to hear about Dixie. I know what you're going through we lost an English springer spaniel at 8 yrs from a ruptured mass on her spleen and like you she was fine in the morning and couldn't move by noon. We took her to the vet and was told there was nothing he could do so we held her he put her down and it was devastating we cried for days. The unconditional love of a dog is unmatched by nothing else in this world. We've since gotten two other furry friends and are woven into the fabric of this home. As they lay by my feet sitting here at 2 in the morning you've reminded me of how great they are. You can hang your hat on the fact you gave her a great life and no one can take that away. We feel your pain take as long as you need to heal from your loss life is short. Our condolences from the Longbranch homestead ❤
oh buddy, I'm sooo sorry for your loss. It's never easy losing a pet. You did an amazing job of remembering her in this video. Dixie was well loved, I could tell. Try and keep your head up and take care of yourself and Miss Lady.
sorry ta ask this butt are you from Canada?
This reminds me of when i lost my dad too. I can't anymore.
😢😂😢😢
I'm so sorry, Jay! That is the worst. My love goes to you and your family.
Jay, thanks for such a touching and honest video. I totally understand. I too went through what you are feeling back in February. All I can say is when you love deeply, it’s the best gift you could have given Dixie. Take the time you need to heal. You will always miss her but I can see already you have amazing memories of your time together and that is what will endure. Take care.
I'm so sorry about Dixie girl!
💔 so very very sorry 😢
WOW YOU JUST EXPLAINED MY DOG TJ HE IS 12 NOW AND I THINK OF HIM AS MY SOUL MATE AND DREAD THE DAY HE GOES SO SORRY FOR YOUR FAMILYS LOSS
❤
😢
Lots hugs brother 😢
So sorry for your loss. I had a similar thing happen with my 8 yr old Aussie four years ago. She was playing with her brother in the back yard and just flipped over. By the time I got to her, she was gone...so fast...had all the same feelings you are experiencing. It is never easy.🙁
Wow, I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my GSP Millie in April of 2022 to lymphoma. She was only five years old, but she was the most endearing soul I have ever experienced, and her death was devastating . There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about her and how much I loved her. I believe that all dogs really do go to heaven. I've never been so sad in my life as I was when I lost my Millie.
All of your feelings are absolutley correct. It's always a tough loss. I feel for you.
so sorry my friend, this was hard to watch because everything you said, felt and talked about here is exactly what we just went through and felt last month with our baby girl luna who was 13, with cancer, happened so fast. there was a feeling of emptiness and a void after she was gone, i didnt feel like camping for weeks, it did help with having 3 other fur babies (different species) and they knew we were upset and didnt leave our sides for a couple weeks. be prepared for many constant reminders for the next few months, sometimes i catch myself asking where she is, this and that and then forgot for a split second, it never gets easier but we tend to cope. best wishes and love my friend.
I’m sorry for your loss.
I'm so sorry.

Are they refillable?
According the the label on the canister itself, "absolutely not". According to the forums of Coleman collectors I've come across online, "sure!"... Currently I'm in the absolutely not camp, but who knows if that changes should I get more comfortable with the process.
Gatta warm up that massage oil. 👐
😧
Baked beans, hot dogs
Hundred percent. I mean if it was me (and it might be soon enough), I'd get a curry going, warm up some soup, maybe see if a lid would get the eggs to do their thing with shakshuka, or even just a fajita fry up. I now have a load of ideas for myself, 🤣🤣 thanks!
I moved to the UK a fair number of years ago, and I saw a documentary about the royals who would use a stove to barbecue meats on their picnics. The Queen made salads, and Prince Philip cooked the meat, and it looked like it was around the '70's, so maybe it's a British thing.
It totally could be, my Nana did fry a lot of things up. My money is still on tea, but I could also see them warming something up in a pan now that you mention it!
Sausage sizzle!
Great idea! Love a good sausage sizzlin' session. Could go baked beans, could go onions and peppers, could toss in a bit of black pudding to boot.. so many options! 🍳
The rubber on that canister is petrified and will not expand, drop of oil in the hole may get it to slide in farther? That U shaped tuber over the burner head is a vaporizer tube, once it heats up it converts the liquid propane fuel into a vapor much like the other long generators do on those box White liquid Fuel Coleman's. Why you get a bursting orange flame at first..
Gotcha! I figured the orange flame might have been dust or debris in the burner, but that makes sense. Will look into the rubber, see if there's anything I can do to bring it back to some modicum of suppleness. Thanks for the tip!
Tea!
Hey Jay I love those older stoves. It's from a time when things were simpler 😊
Totally a simpler time. Bit of tupperware, thermos of coffee and a picnic table by the roadside was half the fun of the road trip. One day perhaps, our kids will get that Dad's not a jerk for never hitting the drive-thru on the trips up north and still stops for picnics lol.
So awesome!
Honestly I consider myself super lucky... still have to see if I can refill them (all signs from the manufacturer point to no) and keep this stove purring for another 40 years!
Bbq
I always love older stuff like that!
Me too, always so neat to look at let alone use. I have his old tackle-box, it's as big as a toolbox but it's a rats nest of nonsense and is up on a shelf. Did pick through it a touch and there's some old lures and a wonderful pocket watch. Nothing groundbreaking in there, mostly old line lol. But this winter I think I'll spend a day and organize it. Who knows, could find a treasure.
We might dieee!😀😀😀😀
🤪🙃
Epic!! Know that, know the area, know the sandwiches, and know the smells!!
I actually saw a NEW version of those picnic-Hibachi-grill thingy at a conservation area a few weeks back... Guess people are going retro and bringing back the memories!
Burgers, hot dogs, smores? Lol idk
🍔😂🌭
Soup, coffee, tea.
Totally!☕
