I was at Portland Borstal 1969/70 after escaping from Guys Marsh. Everyone went into Grenville which was the reception wing. Then you would be allocated your House. Either Drake, Benbow, Raleigh or Nelson. I went into Nelson and was lucky to do a 6month Mech Eng course under Mr Petty. I got City & Guilds. I managed to complete my training in 13 months and was released in August 1970. Funny I dont recognise any of the housemasters in the video. I dont remember the BBC being there. Maybe they were filming in another house. I thought it was ok there. Not too much trouble. Taught me a trade.
Been walloped with a red hot coal shovel on your bare backside I would suggest would traumatise you as a kid,he didn't deserve that even the headmaster tried his bloody hardest and he seemed a very decent fellow, don't judge is what I say until you've walked a mile in John's childhood shoes, poor fellow after been dragged up like that I suppose a lot of blokes would struggle on the straight and narrow.
was in there 74 got brostal a cunt of a place you got nicked if they found you a sleep on you bed of a day .was glad when i went to wetherby borstal it right next door the the race course
The cells and deprevation are not that different from monasteries. But in some monestries you cant speak and have to get up at 2am. Compared to places like Devils Island it looks ok. Free food, free electricity, pocket money, clean water, free clothes, a bed to sleep on, nor are you worked to death. In the Alcatraz punishment cells, after a beating, you had cold water hosed on you and then spent your time in darkness in a freezing cell, underground being fed every second day on a starvation diet.
That fellow was explaining what it was like to be part of the working poor. No future. No way of ever owning your own home. Just working yourself to death just to survive. And all around you is the landed gentry. My ex father in law was from Hull and he said his greatest regret in life was not coming to Australia in the 1960's when he had the chance. It's harder here now but back then a working man could get ahead in Australia, raise a family, and buy his own home. England has always been bleak for the average working man.
I always wondered why prison officers were hated so much. Listening to these men it's easy to understand. They were nobodies in society who when given a little bit of power exercised it unlawfully and without compassion. I get these were different times but clearly the culture of the prison officers was completely toxic.

I have been looking for this documentary ever since youtube first started,i could see it was on idmb but was always unavailable so it made my day to find it. I was on unit 10 next door to brackenbury and i remember a few of these characters obviously smiffy who we all knew had robbed an old ladies handbag. I noticed the black kid in the white shirt in church who was called grant. I saw cobby who like me had been transfered there from wellingborough when that got closed down. I saw mr wainwright the SO on unit 10 and a host of others that i had forgotten about. Best of all i saw the episode about the riot that did not air originally due to the trial taking place at the time so it was great to see it. Glen parva was a great place considering places like feltham as the staff did actually care. Thanks for the upload
I had a cell spin once. Had a large book, i hadn't read it, can't remember where or who i got it from. But cleverly hidden down inside the spine was a bladed tool and other blades within the book!!! Fuming i was lol. Lost days and canteen for that. 7 days extra ffs 🤣 i curse whoever put it there originally lol. 1998 Aylesbury yoi.
I was quite impressed by the two men who made the effort n their cells with the cards and giving the stamps to charity.
What a waste of time sending that man to prison it cost more to keep him there that the debt was😂
smith doing weights lol
Imagine being barrys cell mate.i would be sleeping with 1 eye open and arse to the wall😂

Not so much drugs in prisons back then such as spice to make the prisoners loose their minds
My first sentence was in Glen Parva good days looking back wasn't great at the time mind

Cruel. No other way to describe it.
What does one expect from a nation that once dumped petty criminals and poor people on the other side of the world?
