Travis Does Firewood
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 ต.ค. 2011
I'm Travis and I sell firewood. I have two masters degrees, have lived and worked in Africa in the humanitarian field, and run my own consulting business. And, I stutter.
The channel started as a place to house my videos from my work and travels throughout Africa.
Then, I moved back to the U.S., bought a home, and now spend my spare time tending to my property. As any smart person does, if/when I have a question, I Google it or find a how-to video on TH-cam. Sometimes, I can't seem to fine what I am looking for. So, I end up figuring it out myself. When I do, I film the end product.
THEN, I got heavy into firewood. I split and process firewood for my own home, as well as sell wood - mostly at my self-service firewood stand. I am trying to post more often. Please follow me as I continue my journey to sell firewood as a side hustle in Snohomish County, WA. Thanks for watching.

Another good reason why i sell in bulk for the homeowner needing heat for the winter. For whatever reason, August is my busy season for sales by mid-September. i am all done and out
Yup... my area in KY has a 5-month burn ban (it sucks) from the beginning of May to the beginning of October. (We have a hell'uv'a bonfire at the beginning of October) There should be exceptions for Rainy days, in my opinion. As for firewood sales.... The backyard solo pits (social backyard contained fires) are exempt, I believe.... so I'd say keep selling if you have similar laws. Best, -- J. Andre. / Old Iron Acres
I totally understand why some may feel that ceasing firewood sales during a burn ban is appropriate HOWEVER I doubt retailers stop selling matches, lighters, gasoline or diesel fuel during the same timeframe. Tim in northern TN
Well said, Tim. Keep cuttin' brother!
If people looked at our government this way, our country would be better! Morality has gone bye bye unfortunately
Hear ya, Curtis. Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!
Question…are car dealers/auto makers refusing to sell to people who speed and putting other people at risk? I’m not here to police my customer’s behaviour!
I hear ya, Rudi. Keep cuttin' brother.
NY has a set ban , Mar - May. ????? The wettest time of year!!!! That's how dumb our politicians are
Yeah that sounds odd. Does upstate get drier than the rest of the state? Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!
@@travisdoesfirewood it's statewide, but I actually looked it up. It's ban on brush fires. Mid Mar -mid May. I believe the thinking is all the leaves from previous fall and no new leaves. At least that's what it lines up w. Upstate is so big w wide ranging terrain, pretty flat in WNY, to the Adirondacks and Catskills. So a part could be wet while some is in drought. Not uncommon to get 1/2" here and Canandaigua 20 miles s gets 3-6".
They don't want you to melt any snow for the skiing industry!! LOL -- That is a weird set of dates for a burn ban!
Good topic. Last year we had a total burn ban for 4 months for the entire state of Louisiana during the extreme drought. Fireplaces, BBQ pits and any outdoor cooking was illegal and punishable with heavy fines and jail. But, when the ban was lifted in December every stick of wood I had disappeared. Not a single one of my regulars called until it was lifted so good on them. I certainly appreciated the ban and all who abided by it because I live in a log home surrounded by hundreds of acres of pine plantations.
I think with how unpredictable and uncontrollable forest fires are, folks may be more prone to think ahead rather than do what they want. Thanks for sharing. Keep cuttin'!
1st video I’ve seen of yours. Great points! Think wood inventory stock like gas in your car half tank = empty tank Also, it’s a visual thing for your customers. Nobody wants to pick through crumbs….they want to see a wall of split wood
Many thanks for watching and chiming in, feel free to continue to watch and if you have an episode idea do let me know. All good insight, thanks for sharing. Keep cuttin'!
Thanks bro
I have a few follow-up episodes on this saw, including getting it ported, if you're interested. Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!
@@travisdoesfirewood I am thanks ima check em out bro
Since I am bulk sales, my busiest time is August/September.
Oh I bet! Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!
I've withdrawn sales here where I live because of fire danger. It sucks but Id rather not have the guilt if someone dumb starts a fire. lol
I hear ya. Since your comment, my recent episode touches on this subject. Thanks for sharing, I feel it is an important aspect to firewood sales. Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!
Hey Travis, glad to see you made it back home Safe! How did you like the East Coast Humidity? Hot and Humid is a terrible combination! Not good for processing firewood. Or anything else for that matter!😂 Stay Safe, Keep Cuttin!🪵🪵🪵🪵
Many thanks, Chad. Humidity blows, that's another reason I could never live in DC (where most of my sector is located). Yeah when you're hot as well as soaked in sweat, all that wood dust collects on my arms and then gets itchy - which I hate. But is what it is, right? Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!
Perhaps "backstock" your firewood for weekends. Have a holding place for your bundles. Then when your stand runs low, you just take from backstock and fill up ready to go. So say you'll sell 15 bundles, instead of just filling 15 more, get 25 more bundles ready for sale and hold that to restock. Or better yet take your total sales of 1 week and add 5% to that total or even 10% so 1 day of the week you're wrapping your firewood and stock it in a particular area of your yard and take from that to fill your stand when needed.
All good ideas, Bro. I may do that. Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!
I always assumed Fridays were my big day but it's actually been Thursdays. That seems to be when people start thinking about their weekend
Hey Brian! Isn't it crazy that when you analyze sales that your assumptions are off? Ha. That's why it's good to track your sales so with a few calculations you can be more efficient and better your planning (in theory). Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!
That's ENOUGH FLIP FLAP ! You need to get that firewood stand restocked! Getter done! 💰👍
Yes sir, action coming soon. Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!
You're a great dude, brother. Thank you for such a giving heart. You will be Blessed for this. Chip
Brother Chip, many thanks for watching and dropping a note. Always strive to help others if you can. Keep cuttin'!
I tried buying a cord of split and seasoned birch to resell for bundles. Turned out that a lot of then pieces needed to be resplit. They said it was 16" but 90% of the cuts were about 14". Most of the wood wasn't seasoned enough and needed a few months in the sun
That, my friend, is the crappy part of buying split wood when the plan of flipping it - you can't control the quality. I've bought wood that was similar to what you just mentioned (several episodes on my channel). Take that v. time spent bucking logs at 16" so you can control the quality. It's tough. Let me know if you have any episode ideas and/or if you want to be on my podcast. Keep cuttin'!
Hey Travis. I don't think you'll lose any customers, one or two purchases but not permanent. As Will said, retail's almost 2x the cost and people are having to be more and more frugal now. Hope you were able to somewhat enjoy your workcation. At least ya caught good weather mostly. Any day ending with y is a good one to work on it
Hey hey Brother Brandon. I appreciate your insight. Yeah there was some fun while I was away; being sick sucked but I'm always accustom to working esp if someone is in need. Good weather, yes, just humid which I'm not used too. Amen sir, keep cuttin'!
Only tracking from memory, sales are mostly Wednesday through Saturday. We are hitting 100 or so degrees for the next few days and high fire danger so I pulled out all remaining bundles even though the forest is not officially shut down.
I think that's smart to prevent folks from having campfires when there's a burn ban/heat wave (doing your part to save forests), however sales are sales and we can't control everything. I could track from memory but my tracking system on the spreadsheet isn't too time consuming. Keep cuttin'!
Firewood is weird. Takes the tree decades to grow. Takes a lot of time and resources to process it and get it to the point to be ready to dry, then it can take many months or even years to dry....but people think it should basically free.
Speak that truth, Brother, well said. No one can find bundle wood for cheaper or if they can it's gonna be punky crap. Keep cuttin' Sir!
Hey Travis, I had someone comment on the volume of firewood for the price early on with my stand. I kindly asked them to price it out at a hardware store, grocery store or convenience store. They are one of my better customers multiple years later lol.
I feel that's a good tactic with folks without it coming off as snarky or condescending. Will try that, Brother Will. Keep cuttin'!
@@travisdoesfirewood yeah it's all about the execution of the discussion. Most stores are .7 cu ft for $8+ mine is 1 cu ft for $5.
Stores probably buy for $4 or $5 and then have mark-up. $5/bundle, I feel, is pretty standard across firewood stands.
A stand wouldn’t work here because the meth heads from the next parish would take the wood and the stand. I sell partial or full cords, delivered. No one is allow to pick up their own but everything is usually spoken for every year anyway and they all want delivery. Fun and informative show, thanks.
We pretty much do delivery only but offer pickup by appointment. So far 100% of the people who said they are coming at the agreed time never showed up or even called to say they weren't.
Geeze that sucks.
I took some advice a while ago from another YTer that any bulk wood is to be delivered for a fee, bc make that $, no one in your woodyard, and decreases no-shows. Even wood I'd give away for free (eg punky wood) would still have a delivery fee. Thank you for watching even if bundles aren't something you do on your end. Keep cuttin'!
Such a great and fascinating video, thanks for sharing your tip to restore the firewood stand
Many thanks, Keep cuttin'!
Hey Travis 👍🚜
Hey hey Len, glad you're around. Keep cuttin' Brother!!
Same goes for autoparts or anything thing else you want to do. Start small and by low and sell high. When I started firewood was looking at the lowest guys on Craigslist and i went 50 bucks higher than them. Now i am (or think i am) 20 bucks from the top 3 in my county. I am doing this all in bulk and heating at least 30 homes around the Tacoma/Seattle area.
Nicely done, sir. Thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!

I think it’s good of you to help someone thinking about starting. It’s a good idea.
Many thanks, Russ. I try to help where and when I can. Just hope this doesn't bite me in the butt. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!
I'm on board but have to say there are easier ways to make a buck.
I'm all ears for more side hustle ideas, my friend. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!
I started out selling bundles of wood split with an axe. Proceeds from the sale of the bundles paid for a log splitter which was bought used. More sales resulted in the need of an additional splitter in my woodyard in PA, which bundle sales bought as well. I then bought my dump trailer with proceeds from bundle sales with all the projects I have going on a dump trailer was needed to move material to improve fields, woodyard and to expedite bulk deliveries. I believe in growing my firewood business organically with the proceeds from sales. Yes, it is slower but it definitely works.
I like your progression, Will. Building a side hustle from scratch and organically takes dedication and a level of scrappiness. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!
Glad your feeling better Travis. Stinks we didn't get to link up while I was up.
No worries, brother!! Feeling better now, thanks. Never lost taste which is good.

When I am not feeling it, I don't run the saws as to me that's a sign before accidents happen. Get better soon, Travis 😉👍
A very good train of thought, similarly to not running a saw if you're intoxicated. Feeling better now, back at the grind soon. Thanks again for watching Dan, keep cuttin'!
Plenty of dry wood 🪵 in that tree…! How many cords will they burn per winter in VT…? Does MIL have a stove..??? Feel better soon my friend…!!!
In-laws said they burn like two cords per year but I'd say they could burn more to stay more comfortable. Small wood stove, yes. Feeling better now, back at the woodyard at home soon. Thanks again for watching Ken, keep cuttin'!
Hey, Brother Travis, Here are a few marketing thoughts to consider. #1 Always put every single individual split into it's most profitable category. And that best wood could be called your premium woods or whatever you want to call them. Take the next ones And put Them in your loose rack in your firewood stand. Next, take your super premium naked splits and use them for bags or bundles or whatever you currently use them for. Then you can take another grade of wood and call it campfire wood if you like. Last, take all the rest of the junk wood and put it in your personal pile. This way you get the absolute most profit out of each stick and You don't waste or misgrade even 1 stick. And all of your wood gets used up or sold. And you can take all the cookies and the chunks and all the weird stuff and put them in a tote like you mentioned, and you can take all t and sell those by the tote for 50 bucks or 75 bucks or whatever you think is fair. Just a few thoughts. I hope I said this in a way that makes some sense. I hope you have a Blessed day! Chip
Chip, thanks for leaving a note, Brother. I totally agree with all that you shared, and I do use the word "premium" when advertising hardwood and cedar kindling. Glad I'm not crazy but categorizing wood too - ha. Let me know if you'd like to be on my Firewood Addicts Podcast Series. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!

Will end up with a fair amount of wood from that one tree. Nice job getting it worked up.
Wasn't too shabby, for sure. Branches to be used for kindling so nothing really went to waste. Thanks again for watching, keep cuttin'!

I think I would try a conventional notch. I would also run your 372 for falling. You’ll like that big saw way better I think. I could critique the heck out of it and we could talk and learn some lessons, but I’d far rather do that in private so the world doesn’t think I’m being a jerk to a buddy. Don’t quit based on your first attempt! Use this as a learning experience and try again!
Hey Brandon, I thought about sending my 372 to myself but opted to buy another Pinkway and send it to Vermont to use. We'll catch up soon to talk shop. I'll continue to learn by doing. Many thanks for the support. Keep cuttin' sir.
