    Rinse and repeat bud, it did go where you needed it to. Don’t be shy to readjust your under cut if it’s off. Try to keep the back cut nice and flat. For your first time & a dead and hollow tree you did alright, lots of unknowns with dead & hollow trees.

    Hey & Servus ✌🏻
    In Germany we would say "you have cut the tree dead" means you have lost control over the direction of the tree's fall, so you would have to cut the fall notch again in a different place (over/under)

    That adrenaline rush of fight or flight is perfectly natural and why many people do residential tree work, even if they don't realize it.
    You did fine, a great learning experience that could have gone horribly wrong-it didn't.
    Don't bother with doing the face cut from the bottom, we aren't West Coast loggers. A smaller face cut from the top is not only easier to do it does the job just fine. On suspect trees like this a face cut less than one third the depth of the tree is a good idea as it gives you way more options for your back cut and you don't know just how rotten these things can get.
    I have seen trees notched, just barely touch the back and they literally almost fall apart.
    Also, don't ever say never.

      The humboldt just came to mind as I started, even if it wasn't needed but guess that's the west coaster in me - ha. I'll do conventional next time.
      And good point, I am sure I'll cut more done in the future ;)
      Many thanks for watching, keep cuttin'!

  • @williepie
    @williepie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The humboldt cut takes practice to line up and is only really needed for production falling to save out on timber. A conventional notch is alot easier to make for trees like this and as a beginner. but good job

    • @TravisDoesFirewood
      @TravisDoesFirewood  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      humboldt cut was the only one that came to mind when I start..may be the west coast in me even though I'm in VT at the moment. I''ll try conventional next time. Thanks for the support. Keep cuttin'!

    Ive cut trees for many years, a dead tree is a steep learning curve, especially for your first time ever, they all do diffent things, no top weight to get the momentum moving, they have hollow wood, punky wood, dry no hinge wood to hold it, they are sketchy, ive sent dead trees 90⁰ off where i was aiming, it happens,
    It was a shitshow, but its down, no one no items no houses sheds in the way, if it hits the ground and u can still count to 21, youre ok,
    Very first tree i cut down was way worse. And i had an experienced guy coaching me.
    It went the right way, you cleaned up the face somewhat, and it came out ok in the end. I was scared when u hit the wedge you would pop the tree off the stump and it was gonna go back wards.
    Getting a rope up in them helps, if you can get one up there, and have some one pull with a truck or tractor a ways away

      Many things could have gone worse, and several things that I could have done differently. All things to learn from, for sure. Thanks for your insight!

    You did it! Without getting hurt, congratulations. Best advice I can give you is to make friends with a local tree guy and go learn. They will appreciate the free help and you will leave with the comfort of knowledge. You will get hooked and wonder why you didn’t do it sooner in life. ☝️

    It takes practice. Your Humboldt cut was a little off but you will get better if you keep practicing. A conventional cut or an open face cut might have been better for this. But you got it down in the right path and safely. Good job 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

    I think I would try a conventional notch. I would also run your 372 for falling. You’ll like that big saw way better I think.
    I could critique the heck out of it and we could talk and learn some lessons, but I’d far rather do that in private so the world doesn’t think I’m being a jerk to a buddy.
    Don’t quit based on your first attempt! Use this as a learning experience and try again!

    • @TravisDoesFirewood
      @TravisDoesFirewood  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Brandon, I thought about sending my 372 to myself but opted to buy another Pinkway and send it to Vermont to use.

    I got thirty years killing trees for money and even I SNAFU one or three every so often Brother. Need to keep practicin for sure . There is a good video ion You tube Called Physics of falling ,it is ment for us pro fallers but it gives good pointer. Getting falling wedges and use them every time will make you a stronger more confident faller.

    Practice makes perfect. Tree is down and no one got hurt so it can be a learning experience. Your face cut should have been smaller. Look to be about 1/3 of the diameter of the tree. Just go slow and look up just as you did. You were right to leave the saw and get out of the way. No saw is worth getting hurt or worse.
