    Does this only does AV1 or will it do others also? I'm trying to get back into computers after 20 plus yrs. We didn't need GPUs anyway I am building a home server and I'm seeing that I may need a GPU just to do the transcoding I was thinking about getting something small cheap it will only be for a couple of TVs in the house thinking about this asrock A310 or that little $99 sparkle I think you did it on your site I think it only did maybe between 3 or 5 vids. Which would you recommend if you had to choose the little sparkle or this A310? I do kind of like the little look of this but it takes up two spaces

      The resizing doesn't really use the GPU for AV1 files, that's why the CPU topped out at 100% and the videos started to buffer. But using H264 the GPU does the decoding, resizing and encoding, putting a lot less demand on the CPU but higher load on the GPU. That was why the server/NAS could handle nine concurrent streams of the Under the Dome episodes (they were encoded using AV1) but far more concurrent episodes of The Wire that was encoded using H264. The H264 encoded files cause a bit more load on the GPU but far less on the CPU. As the GPU has support for H264 it is very efficient at both decoding and encoding these files, so the server/NAS can handle more concurrent users watching video. Direct play without resizing is the most efficient for the Server/NAS as it doesn't really need to do anything but serve the data without changing anything. Now different GPU have slightly different capabilities for this so a Nvidia, AMD or Intel GPU will differ. Intel is pretty good at this and even the integrated GPU in their processors supports what is called Quick Sync. This is pretty capable and can be improved by adding a second Intel GPU such as a A380. If I remember correctly it says in the intel website that adding a A380 to a computer that have an Intel processor with integrated GPU will increase encoding performance by 40%. the A380 is a pretty cheap card priced at about $120. If you need higher performance Intel has some more advanced cards such as the ARC Pro A40, A50 and A60 GPU. I have no idea about how the performance matches when compared to the A380 though. There's also a A310, though again I don't know anything about what performance can be expected considering video encoding performance compared to the A380 or the A580, A750 or A770. So hopefully others will know more. Now if you are looking at buiiding a server or NAS that will support Plex and it's only for your home and say three users you would probably be OK with a intel processors with integrated GPU. if you are looking at supporting a lot of users then adding a A380 or something like that will probably handle your needs.

    Hardware transcoding with hdr tone mapping isn't support on windows officially yet on intel igpu/gpus. (there's a plex preview beta dating back to febryary this year that includes the fix to make it work for 11+th gen intel igpu and gpus) For years it has been supported on linux tho. You could just build a low power intel cpu server with no dgpu, just an igpu (UHD 630 can transcode up to 5-6 4k to 1080p streams no issue, it's included in intel cpus since 6th/7th gen)

      Not right. You should only use the hardware key as 2FA on the apps or sites, and delete other 2FA methods. It's safer because nobody can access the codes if not with the key. You didn't test enough fam.

Yubi keys i see at infosec circles alott, so yeah, great advice.

    These keys are not worth the effort at most places. You call customer support and tell them you've forgotten the password, they don't work for some reason, or maybe you've lost the yubikey (or whatever). Customer service asks you a few personal questions (all which an identity thief will know) and then customer service throws open the gate. Try it yourself.

    why would you need to store stuff in some format that requires transcoding. just use direct http/s file transfer over normal web server video player. pre-transcoded. smarter or harder.

    • @smokecrackhailsatan
      @smokecrackhailsatan หลายเดือนก่อน

      ...Maybe because you still want to watch it locally in the original resolution and bitrate, but you may not have the bandwidth to stream that, and you don't want to store two copies of the same file to have one pre-transcoded? Maybe you also want your collection organized and to have access to an app to stream it on practically every device? Maybe you don't want to have to tunnel into your home network via a VPN to watch your content and don't want to have to deal with the hassle of setting up a reverse proxy to expose something to the web? Maybe you can't even host a local webserver due to ISP limitations (CG-NAT, for instance). I could go on and on. So, tell me which one is smarter or harder here.

    • @gsestream
      @gsestream หลายเดือนก่อน

      if you lack bandwidth then just let it buffer on the device you want to stream it to, if you want to keep the original quality file only. otherwise just keep the 4K and the 1080p versions and even 720p, the lower resolution files are much smaller than the original. you can also use more aggressive compression on the secondary files etc. a non-issue.@@smokecrackhailsatan

    You cannot measure transcode power on the same system. You need resources for playing videos, and also resources for transcoding. If you do it on the same machine, it is not really a good test. You need to have like a dedicated linux or windows plex server, and watch on different machine. AV1 is heavy on CPU, that is why you can't play more then three 4K videos. You are bottlenecked with your CPU, not GPU

    Smaller files at high quality. Newer codecs are the staple of anime fans. So I'm guessing some anime fans are asking about AV1. Me being an anime fan... You won't find many UHD (HEVC) movies in AV1 unless someone has converted it to AV1. AV1 makes files smaller than HEVC and at a slightly high quality.

    Looks like TH-cam ate my last comment (probably because I included a link). There's no hardware HDR tonemapping support on the release version of Plex with intel igpu's/ARC. There is a preview build available on the plex forums you could check out. It might explain the extra CPU overhead with AV1 transcodes.
