Harbour BAIT & BERLEY fishing | Shallow stray lining 2m of water | Snapper fishing NZ
Headed up the harbour fishing just after sunrise. I'm using bait (kahawai) and barley to catch snapper in the shallow water (2 meters) in the harbour using the stray line method. After letting the barley soak for a while things start to pick up and I get some very good eating size snapper. Great day fishing in NZ!
Gear used:
Rod | Abu Garcia Veritas 6-10kg
Reel | Penn Slammer III 3500

    hi can i ask about the boat , im looking at the idea of a true kit for a small boat alongside the kayak how did you find fishing from an inflatable , would you recommend it ? im just nervous of the idea of hooks , fish spines & holes would you buy an inflatable if you were to start over or was it a hassle to fish from ? thank you

      Hey mate. Shape things near the boat is definitely something you have to think about. I always made sure to net fish and drop them directly in a fish bin. I’ve now got a different boat (you’ll see that in my latest videos) and it’s a lot my casual dealing with sharp and pointy things I must say. The TrueKit is amazing for the ease of storage and start up cost but does have some drawbacks when it comes to fishing that’s for sure. Hope that helps. Cheers, Thomas

    More of what I consider an essential upgrade rather than equipment would be a second battery on the boat. You can do it.simply enough with a battery switch to select battery 1, battery 2, or both but that requires you to monitor battery levels and switch them in and out manually to keep both charged. A better system is to use an Automatic Charge Relay (I use one by "Blue Sea Systems" called "Add a Battery" but there's cheaper ones that do the same thing) which will detect if a battery's low and connect it to charge when the motor's running. That also lets you use one battery just for starting the motor and the other as a "house battery" so you can run the VHF, sonar, music, lights, anchor winch, etc all you like without worrying about the motor not starting due to a flat battery.

    when you're having issues getting bites/takes in amongst the birds like that it is because your softbait/lure is too large. You need to match the hatch size wise. Somedays the fish dont care and will eat anything you throw at them, other days are get fixated on a certain size and anything too much larger wont get touched. On those days throw in a white Zman Slim Swimz or Minnowz and you should see a lot more action, if wanting to go with a jig the Catch Seducer is my go to

    Amazing video as always!! Loved the cook up, looked fantastic, definitely inspired me to give that a try when the summer rolls around. I like the neon sign on the wall, there’s got to be a story behind that 😅

    You're video came up on my screen, so i thought I'd take a look and cool bud, I'm liking what i see. But anyway nice catch and fresh is always best, plus yeah would love to see more catch and cook videos, especially when someone knows what they're doing lol. I subscribe and follow quite a few NZ spearfisherman, but 1 not many of them do catch and cook videos, and 2, when they do they butcher the poor things with their slap up meals, and one in particular I have to say might need to take up some cooking lessons, so he doesn't make a mess of his catch when it's all cooked up. 😂😭🤣 So I'm looking forward to checking out all your other content you've made so far and look forward to seeing more especially with your cooking of any type of fish meal. Cheers 👍 PS, so are you up near the Bay of Islands Northland.? I'm in Whangarei myself and go out in the Harbour for a fish when I can.

      Thanks so much for watching mate. So glad you enjoyed the cooking segment. That was a fun meal to whip up on the boat. Can’t beat homemade tortillas! I’m a bit further north than the Bay of Islands. Looks like the fishing has been great lately around the harbour in Whāngārei. Thanks so much again for watching. I really appreciate it. Cheers, Thomas

    Very good mate. Maybe a little talk about what soft baits and jig heads you are using would be helpful. Cooking always good, especially more unusual fish recipes.

      Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed the cooking. That recipe is super yum. I’ll do more of it in the future and maybe some more on board cooking too. Thanks re the gear talk. I normally do but when I got to editing for this video I noticed the info I’d given was completely wrong (I said the wrong softbait colour 😬) so I had to edit it out as it was more than useless info when it was completely incorrect 😂 Sorry about that! For your reference I was fishing with a 5” jerk shadz from z man in atomic sunrise colour and I used 1/2oz jig head at the start and 3/4oz jig head from about halfway through the video. Thanks heaps for watching. Thomas

    so do you ever use fresh baits, worms, shellfish, sliced up baitfish?

    • @chasingacatch6017
      @chasingacatch6017 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Don. I bait fish off the rocks but not really on the boat though. For one I love lure fishing and two it’s just so dirty and smelly 😂 In saying that I’m planning to do a stray lining video soon using bait. We don’t really use worms down here (not in the ocean anyway) we use pretty big dead baits. Thanks for watching this one! Thomas

    Thanks for the cooking video Thomas! I’d love to see more of how you guys like to cook up your fresh fish! So interesting to hear a fisherman say you like them sometimes better the day after!? I’ve never heard that! Also I’d love to see other ways you enjoy cooking whole fish AND different ways you like to cook filets! I know you talk about how certain sizes become fillets and others are whole fish cooks so I’d find that interesting… also what does Zadie’s fish look like? What is a 1 year old eating for her fish choices? And I remember how you said those cooking videos you two did during Covid didn’t react well so I do understand your potential hesitance on doing them and appreciate it all the more! (Though I always loved the cooking videos too!) 😉😂

      Thanks so much for watching Jaci. I’m glad I could get a catch and cook together so quickly after you’d said you’d like that. The next video has some cooking in there too 🙌 Zadie loves just a simple piece of fillet cooked in olive oil. It’s so cool being able to catch fresh fish for her. I really appreciate all your support. Thanks so much for watching. Thomas 🙌😀
