Why we use scythes instead of a brushcutter | MOWING MEADOWS E03: Lagmansro vs Styra
มุมมอง 128K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to another episode of Mowing Meadows where we take a look at two meadows that make it very clear why we use scythes instead of machines. A lot of people say we should be using brushcutters, weedwackers, clearing saws... but they fail to understand the natural environment where we work. We don't scythe to eliminate plants, we scythe so that they can live. By showing the different results...

Scything 300 m² Swedish Garden Meadow + Epic Fail! | How to Use a Scythe

I have a few private clients who hire me every year to mow parts of their garden or property that they keep as meadow. It’s a different kind of job compared to the big meadows we usually work on, but just as nice! This time, I’m at Else’s garden, which I have been mowing for 7 years now. The meadow is situated on a slope, there are trees, bushes, low-hanging branches and wire fencing - lot’s of...

You're phased by one hector??😂😂😂
he must have six pack
It looks easy
My hat is off to you - what a great day's work and what an effort. I would not have believed it if someone told me I would watch a 36-minute video on scything. Looks like an acre is about a day's work for reaping, then?
@@jojohehe3251 yes in some countries an acre seems to refer to a days work. But there are many things that's needs to be done on a field ..and different crops demand different tasks. So the measurement is a bit blunt. In Sweden an acre is similar in area with our tunnland which is more accurate as it refers to the area suitable to sow with a barrel (tunna) of grains.
Why not just go around and around without stopping? Running back every row wastes a lot of time and energy.
@@jojohehe32511 because the field is leaning, and you want to mow downward. 2 the running is only half an hour of 14. And it relieves tension from the body. 3. Easier acces to my waterbottles.
Scythe = Polish lawnmower
The handle needs to be longer. That is made for a shorter person
@@LordMesa ok, can you explain why? And how long it should be for me of 172cm ? It is good for me to know if I have made a mistake. Because I have developed this snath during 20 years of professional mowing, it is now sold as the Nordic snath worldwide and regarded as the best by many other professional mowers.
@slattergubben6702 Well, then you know much more than me. To me, the big one looked like it made you kneel more than the small one. Which made me think it was too short. But I am not an expert. If you say that's the correct form, then I am happy to defer to you.
@LordMesa thanks, as a professional mowers and manufacturer of snath I have always snath in all sizes with me to try. My perception is , at least here in Sweden many people have too long snath nowadays. You do not get strength and control by having the scythe too far away from your feet, neither by having handles placed too high referring to the body. On the other hand many old Swedish snathmodels were crap both in design and as they were too short.
Admit it, you didn't search for this video
That dude could probably rotate the earth with all that abdominal rotation
Why am I even here on a Friday night at 11.00pm. I don't know either, but that's youtube for you 😀
Your arms and core has to be burning... i dont think some people even understand the extreme toughness of this...
@@user-gu3ie right, not burning though as this is my normal job. It is just a very tough day. But sure , it is more like swimming or cross country skiing where you use the whole body.
Well done my friend. Very hard work to put yourself through but you dont need to prove anything to anyone ever again.
As a Norwegian who grew up a farm and my Dad used one of these, it brings back good memories and nostalgia 😊 Thank you 💚🐸⛏️Farming is very hard work 😼💪🏻🤠 Also the smell of fresh cut grass 😌👌🏻
Would be interesting to see if you had someone sharpening additional blades for you so you could quickly swap
@@pjanoo6973 that would ease a little bit. But writing my own rules i regard peening and honing should be done by the mower. It is so included in the job.
respect.
$700 to buy a full scythe kit is not bad but its too bad you dont accept money orders. I ditched my credits cards a long time ago.
@@rashadabdullah9769 interesting, so you mean if I had PayPal you would have bought? We can of course issue an invoice but then you need to pay in advance before we ship.
@slattergubben6702 when i was a kid i bought things via money order. Jensons usa, chainreaction cycles, i bought the bowflex all using money orders. I never even had a bank account. Recently here in canada we have etransfers and ive been buying things using that. Infact ive bought some things on layway like that. Every month i put money into an account the business set up based on what i want to buy and when ive paid the full amount they ship. Last year i bought a $1200 honda gx100 motor this way from a company. Infact i gave them the sale bcoz in 2023 i bought a new briggs motor for my lawn mower like that hence why i did not hesitate to give him the honda sale. I have no trouble paying in advance. So long as you're paid and i get the product. Anyway, and specific to you, its strange that you want to get back to the land but only accept payment from corrupt businesses or money dealers. I cant afford to buy a scythe now. Spent too much building a new moped last year with the gx100. But i def want one even if i gotta make it myself. I would send you straight cash in a reg envelope if you want. Trade something for something. I msg all sellers and none offer money order payment, NONE so far omg. Anyway, maybe around fall i will see about getting a scythe.
Hmm… that smile after saying 12k poor man’s dollars… lol… ah to be poor
I like how mid way thru the challenge. He failed it. 😅 he couldn’t cut 1 hectare with the long blade. Nice try, good luck in your future endeavours.
Did 3 hours a day during the 1st lockdown, really helped the technique, it becomes effortless over time. and a lot more zen-like! It's all good!

My Grandpa would swing one for hours.
Do you ever switch sides?
@@iantercero5380 not really, there is lefthanded scythes but I practice too less. Usually we are mowing in much more technically challenging meadows and then you just go for your skilled side. On the other hand it does not seem to affect the body really. It is only for three or four month and not everyday, we need to rake the grass ass well.
Tell you what, you got to be fit for this challenge.
great apprciated style in questiomn
keep up great work, nice video, nice everything nice book, nice
grimmmmmmmmer
I wonder how many people lost their feet doing this. Not Tolstoi for sure.
@@VirtualPianoAcademy noone. If you try you will realise feet is the safest part of the body when handling a scythe. I have seen cuts in most part of the body during my career. No really bad though - and thankfully.
@@slattergubben6702 I really appreciate your knowledge on this. On Anna Karenina there is a complete explanation of how hard this work is so I was wondering lol. Thanks for your reply! :)
Why when you talk about liking the video, the like button on youtube shine ? I tried multiple time on this video and it happens everytime
Why do you go back all the way to the other side of the field wouldn't it save time to just start at the side you reach each row? If its something he talks about in other video i apologies i never been on this channel before.
@@waydromeda if I go back in the same row I would mow grass into standing grass. That's is a big drawback. If it would had been totally flat I could have mowed in a rectangle although it has a drawback that I never had the chance to run and release tensions from the body. And that it would have been hard to control where is the waterbottles. But now the meadow is leaning and then the only option is to mow from up to down. Working with the gravity
Here I'm, learning about snaths even tho I don't need.. such a entertainment. Good job mate!
I did see the video with the long blade last time. Now the algorithm deemed i needed to watch this. Amazing how one can do this.
