We are a charitable organisation set up to preserve, restore and maintain historic military vehicles from both world wars, and to educate the public about their history. Our unique line-up of rare and important military vehicles, including tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, is considered to be one of the finest working collections in the world.
We are a working collection where schools, engineers, historians, modellers, enthusiasts and collectors come together to discover and learn.
We source original components and where necessary, create new parts from the original blueprints or examples. Our research into the history of every vehicle in our collection - where and when it was assembled, its role in combat and the story of the people who operated them or fought against them - provides unique authenticity to our work.
We receive no UK government funding so our work in restoring vehicles and creating a centre of technical and historical excellence depends on support from you

Reviving History: SARC Marmon Herrington | WWII Vehicles Uncovered - EP. 7
As the world braced for conflict in 1939, the Union of South Africa found itself urgently needing its own armoured reconnaissance vehicles. Their solution began with mounting a newly designed armoured body onto the standard Ford 3-ton General Service Truck chassis. This rear-wheel-drive adaptation was officially designated the South African Reconnaissance Car Mk I. Between 1940 and 1941, some 135 of these pioneering vehicles were produced, laying the groundwork for South Africa’s growing armoured capabilities.
At the same time, the Marmon-Herrington company offered a crucial upgrade: since the early 1930s, they had sold conversion kits that transformed ordinary trucks into all-wheel-drive platforms. By applying these kits to the Ford chassis, South African engineers not only achieved four-wheel drive but also improved ground clearance, making the vehicle more suited to varied and challenging terrain. This enhanced design became known as the South African Reconnaissance Car Mk II, and a total of 887 rolled off the lines by mid-1941.
Continual refinement brought about the Mk III, with an impressive 2,630 units produced. Though officially referred to by their South African designations, enthusiasts across the globe commonly recognize the entire series by a single, defining name: Marmon-Herrington.

Hilary is amazing
I assume that when those machine guns were in use, those forward-looking hatches had to be open, otherwise the guns couldn't be aimed or pivoted. Could the guns be operated at the same time by one operator, like the rear gunner in some aeroplanes?
it better be called hubert

Russian made just junk
Hitler had zero global aspirations. Demonstrable historical fact. Things like "operation sealoin" the invasion of Britain. A myth, created by Britain itself. All in our archives.
Best German weapon of WW2.
Rest in peace Mike Gibb. What a loss.
StuGs behind him waiting for orders.
The Weald Foundation being a Centre of Excellence is somewhat of an understatement. Fantastic work done by you folks, as always.
The Weald Foundation is so much up it's own arse that they can no longer see daylight. I desperately hope my tax money isn't funding the buggers.
It is good to see Hilary Doyle still going strong. It must be about 55 years since I and my Dad bought our first Bellona titles by him. I have gone from secondary school to past retirement with his books always on my shelves. Please convey to him my thanks for the pleasure his work has given to me and others down the years.
RIP Mike Gibb. Hopefully your legacy will continue.
As it also pertains to Africa-built armoured cars, I thought I would repeat my unanswered question from two months ago: "I don't suppose the Weald Foundation has found any material on the 35+ armoured cars built in Sudan for the Sudan Defence Force in the late 1930s and others built there during WWII? They served with some effect in the East African Campaign and even made an appearance in Libya supporting the LRDG. Bovington appears to have nothing. Given that they are essentially part of British armoured history, the lack of information on them is a little surprising. Any ideas?
No information at present, but will look into our archive and see if we anything related to that. Get in contact with us over email on website.
@@wealdfoundation Many thanks. Will do.
RIP Mike Gibb, sorely missed - this was a dream I shared with Mike and we often discussed these the MH Armoured cars. I am so happy that he made this incredible effort to preserve this iconic South African contribution to the war effort in WW11. I have met descendants while working in the Danakil of Italian askaris from Ethiopia/ Eritrea whose grandfathers fought against the Union Defence Force in Eritrea who recounted to me the unique noise and terrifying impact which a formation of these armoured cars made when their grandfathers were fighting them. The memory of these cars remained in the popular consciousness of the Afar people who served against them.
The Red Army captured a lot of of these bikes and liked them so much that they produced their own version. It's called the Ural and are still being made today, but with fuel injection. Most of the bikes you see in WW2 movies are actually Urals.
Ketten - tracks, K(raft)rad - motorcycle Sd.Kfz means „Sonderkraftfahrzeug“ - Special purpose vehicle.
Track is KettenK, rad is vehicle. A Fahrrad is a bicycle...

I just love a sleigh ride! 🎶Over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house we go....🎶
What is with all of the micro-managers?
This is a surprisingly modern vehicle design, these had to have run circles around allied armor
The Germans used more captured armor and horses. The US out produced them with our own raw materials. This the Germans didn't have . They wasted valuable materials they didn't have instead of on simpler designs they could mass produce.
The uniforms of the Nazis are the most impressive, their clothes are very modern even today.
Beautiful, hats off to the crew.😊
Excellent restoration. Keeping history alive. Thanks a lot.
do the little ramps come with it? in case the 4wd off road combat vehicle meets another 2 inch obstacle? well done lads! im just having a go..

Hello SIR I follow you for so many years It is a pleasure to see you are always on the deck.
I appreciate the good quality of the content of this video, but I am rather disappointed that the Weald Foundation hasn't seen fit to acknowledge those who have responded to it. You have to throw your on-line audience a few bones occasionally to keep them sweet.

I m not agree with you that the Wehrmacht has 80 percent horse as carry force in the second half at the '30. In fact, they initiated a policy of over motorised armies.

My former Swiss ex-G13 was built using parts made during the war, the majority marked with the three letter Nazis manufacturer's code. In fact the front glacis plate had the code for Ruhstahl, indicating the body was made in Germany. Ergo, I think the Czech factory was unable to produce the bodies. Regarding the muzzle brake... The prototype vehicle had a muzzle brake, I can speak with some authority as to why the original German versions had no brake. Look at the vehicles "Angle of Approach." Run a ruler along the image here of the front edge of the track up toward the muzzle. A muzzle brake, if installed, will extend beyond the edge of the ruler or angle of approach of the vehicle. As a former crew on the Patton Museum's Hetzer that had the brake removed so as to resemble a wartime German vehicle, we were moving down a slight incline. We were going to drive to the road beyond. Result was that we impaled the gun's muzzle into the embankment (ditch) of the road beyond stalling the vehicle. Because of this impediment to the vehicle's maneuverability, the Germans chose to ditch the muzzle brake. The Swiss, following the war, chose to specify the addition of a muzzle brake as it is said to reduce the strain on the recoil mechanism by some 10%. The Swiss apparently preferred longevity. I've been told that the Swiss plans for the G13 was to drive them on the road to defensive prepared positions. A further item I wish to point out are the three steel cylindrical bosses welded on top the crew area. Each has a cap that is threaded onto the bosses to keep dirt out. The bosses are about 3" in diameter and a couple inches high. What are they far you might ask. Look at a Bergpanzer, the repair Hetzer. It came with a three point hoist. Those bosses are for installing a Berg's hoist onto the Jagdpanzer 38T. Ingeniously, you could then use the hoist attached to your own vehicle to affect repairs, while the Berghetzer could be employed elsewhere, perhaps to recover a disabled Hetzer? Feel free to contact the founder of the US WWII Historical Re-enactment Society regarding Hetzers. I may well be the most experienced Hetzer driver in the USA with some twenty years experience. .
actually, you know what might work on this tank, a VR headset attached to a small camera which is mounted just inside the driver's visor slot. I wonder.
