The patch in front of the driver reminds me of the German post war law regarding armoured vehicles. From what I recall (I do not know if this is still the case) If an armoured vehicle was in private hands in Germany, the armour had to be cut out in front of the driver. Many owners would replace the armour with a thinner piece of mild steel so the vehicle looked 'right'.

Haha I'd be worried about getting stuck in some of these vehicles, but I'm a lot larger than Mr Doyle!

I wonder what the quality of the armour is like on the jagdpanzer 38t? I remember reading several German accounts including Otto Carius' that they loved their 38t' from training, but the armor turned out to be just as bad as the Italian steel, and shattered against non-penetrating hits. I seem to recall Carius' losing teeth while the radio operator lost his arm from failed armor splinters.

From Panzer Tracts No 9(written by Thomas Jentz and Hilary Doyle):
"The frontal armor was to be proof against attack from most anti-tank guns, but the side armor was to proof only against armor-piercing bullets from 7.92 mm machine gun fire and artillery shell fragments. The 20-mm-thick sides and rear, made out of low alloy SM (Siemens-Marteinit) steel with the hardness of 75-90 kg/mm2(equal to 220 to 265 Brinell Hardness), equivalent to 14.5 mm of 153 kg/mm2 armor plate, provided protection only against 7.92 mm armor-piercing bullets."
From Jagdpanzer 38 'Hetzer' 1944-45(yet again, written by Jentz and Doyle):
"Frontal armour consisted of rolled plates welded together and interlocked to increase strength. These 60 mm plates were produced in accordance with specification E22 and hardened to 265-309 Brinell."
      I hope this helps.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Czech factories were last in line for the good alloys / armor plate which would reduce quality.

I got to go inside the Hetzer at the museum in Woodsire on the last day they did tours. It was really roomy inside, nothing like most tanks.

An interesting perspective, not from a too tall irishman. But I think the whole 'StuG Emergency' is hooey. StuG IV came to the rescue, even if was somewhat crude. 'Hetzers' did not make an appearance till mid-44. The Hetzer was meant as a AFV for the infantry divisions, freeing up StuG III use in ID. StuGs were Sturmartillerie, hetzers were panzer jaeger.

In case perhaps an appropriately sized Irish man, even though he comments on the cramped nature of the vehicle. Chieftain was just built to the wrong scale for the Hetzer.

It's on the Arsenalen channel I think. They seem to share it between them.
