Ulanzi Video Fast | Is This Budget Tripod Too Good To Be True?
Ulanzi recently released a video tripod that seemed to check everything off on my checklist. And the best part is it comes in between $500-$600 at launch. There must be a catch... is it too good to be true?

There are several Drop in filters for both EF and PL - also, depending on the lenses you get some of them have drop in filters built in. The Nisi Athena's are an incredible option.
Well, Sennh sounds great in studio condition without pop filter. Rode sounds terrible naked. However when the dead cat filter in on, that’s a way different story. Sennh sound bumpy and dull while rode gets crispy and flat. I feel like rode took a huge attention to the fact it would be used in the field with the filter. I’m pro engineer with over 20 years of experience. Look. My verdict here is is: If you do room recoding like interviews. Means no wind and no proximity issues, Sennheiser is a great deal. In case you go out, field or smth. NTG4 is more natural sounding device. However you MUST use a windshield otherwise it would sound like crap. Use flat on original and use high frequency boost with dead cat. To my ears mke600 is pleasant for voiceover and vlogging internally. Two mics are designed to the different conditions. Rode gives 10 years, so internal battery fault is not relative. Batt would last long. Hope that helps
That’s fantastic insight!! Thank you so much for the detailed breakdown. Much appreciated :)
Thanks for this video, showing details about his tripod. Good job!
Thank you!
would Nikon D4s fit?
I checked the height of the Nikon D4s online and it looks to be 157mm. Which is unfortunately too high for this cage. Cage max height is around 145mm
I’ve been very curious about this because the lenses are like 50% cheaper
It’s a gamble but you might get something good! I’m still using this lens, and the fungus doesn’t seem to be growing or affecting imaging quality
@@SMBYopinion that’s dope!
Cool shot bro 3:01
Thanks bro!
Turn off lens IS
You mean for the panning test? IS was off
Great video demo of this.. i am very impressed with Ulanzi gear, they are keeping all the other companies in check because they keep everything pretty budget friendly compared to their competitors but also keeping the quality up and usually more features!
Thanks for the comment and glad you found the video helpful! Agreed, hope they keep making more great things
*I used to have a Blue Compass which is used for Mics weighting up too 2.4lbs and I used this for my Panasonic G7 at the time for my over head as well as Talking head videos and it worked Great*
Fantastic option!
Would this fit D850?
I don’t have one to test but if it has dimensions like most dslr /mirrorless, then it should
If you are in Ontario you can try crossborder shipping to reduce those import fees a bit
Sadly I’m not :(
Is it compatible with stuff from Smallrig?
wow wow, bro, slow down please... ))
I like my camera to have some "heft" to work against for reducing shake. So, I shoot with a grip. When I purchased my 5D3 over 12 years ago I purchased a favorably reviewed 3rd party grip for it. That lasted maybe 18 months. I'm a slow learner, so I read about the 3rd party grip that was at that time everyone's favorite. A couple of years went by and it too had failed. Still, I wanted another grip. Finally, coming to my senses, I bought the Canon grip. It felt better, but not impressively so. The battery holder was certainly nothing that would inspire confidence. Over the lifespan of the grip it never glitched, failed to fire, failed to generate focus or anything else. Last month, after using the camera for 12 years and the Canon grip for over 8, I replaced both with a new R5 and BG-R10. I did not, even for a moment consider a 3rd party grip. That said, my story is old news and the newer 3rd party grips have probably improved. They just aren't for me.
Thanks for sharing your experience. No doubt the originals are going to be better and most likely more durable! If you can, oems are a better option
Thanks! good info and execution!
Thank you!
I am now too scarred to purchase ugly.....Let me tell you why. My first purchase from KEH was a bargain grade D3s and arrived in quite good order....just missing rubber cap to remote connector. Them I purchased Nikon 80-400 G in bargain grade with a noted damage to front ring. On arrival the ring had a missing section but not too bad. What wasn't mentioned was weather seal next to bayonet mount was lifting in one small section. The movements of lens seemed to be good and free without stiffness. Then for a third time I decided to try a bargain grade Nikon 24-70 G ED also with damage to front ring. This time the damage seemed to be easily 1/3 of ring broken off (most likely dropped damage) and on mounting on camera....auto focus works fine but manual focus seems to freeze until using auto focus and then it works for a bit. Will see if frees up and usually use auto focus anyway. Bit dust in glass which is to be expected. I think 24-70 more an ugly grade than Bargain grade. But can't be too fussy as not buying exc or as new grades. But now unsure if taking a chance on ugly is worth it as in Australia , with our weak dollar and shipping generally cost of item doubles by time it gets here.........But am happy with the body though....Its a beast
Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s a gamble for sure, especially since their descriptions are always so vague and without pictures. Though I’m quite surprised that 24-70 ended up in bargain grade, usually if there’s a functional issue it goes to ugly but yeah who knows, it’s always a toss up
Mke 600 sounds better and the exchangeable battery is a big plus on set. Also: micro usb? Eew. Really? Rode didn't switch to USB C by now?
From what I remember they haven’t changed it. Though I did just do a quick Amazon search and there was one photo with what looks like a usb-c. Doesn’t mention usb type in the description though.
@@SMBYopinion Would be a big bummer. I wouldn't buy anything with micro usb nowadays. But well ... I'm settled on the MKE600 anyways. Should work well together with the generic Rode shockmount for 3rd Party mics. Judged by how it looks it'll allow you to move the mic backwards a little bit in case you're using a wide angle lens.
The MKE600 is a great buy. Still using mine now!
I don't need or want internal NDs. I want the creative flexibility to use my own ND options (matte box, screw-ons, drop-in blades). I'll be using L-mount NiSi Athena Primes with drop-in ND filters. Videographers want internal NDs, not cinematographers.
You are correct. These videographers need to stick with Sony, Nikon, and canon mirrorless cameras and stay away from Cinema cameras like black magic. Black magic cinema cameras wasn’t made for them, cinema cameras were made for cinematographers while mirrorless cameras were made for videographers.
Talk, talk, talk.
Thanks for this. I have a question, what if I want right handle, what should I buy? It looks like it can't only connect to the left handle
You can try flipping through bracket, but I’d imagine it’ll make your rig incredibly awkward and unbalanced. I would say your best bet is to look for full sized cage then
Nice video. I'm a bit curious if you considered the newwer one, which has a more articulated set of arms
Thank you! I think I know which one you’re referring to. Unfortunately I haven’t tried it so can’t say for sure. I saw it’s using a ball mount for the arm joints and that could be a weak point. I can imagine if a lot of weight was mounted on the end, there could be a possibility the ball joint might slip. Just my assumption though. If I ever get a chance to try it, I’ll update!
@@SMBYopinion yea, ive been looking at them and related options. Some have said its not good for a heavy camera, but i think it might be fine for smaller setups like you and i have (i might even use my phone a lot). Anyway, thanks for showing your previous setup and why this was an upgrade
@RyanCrossOfficial glad I could help! Good luck with your setup
So does this mean I should just get the normal 24-105mm rather than this one the L version?
Normal one as in the one without the constant aperture? All of canon’s constant aperture 24-105s are L versions
Great video, thanks! Which one do you think would be a better choice for birds photography? So it means distant voice. I know the regular NTG can be boosted +15dB so the pre-amp in my Canon R6 can be lowered, but did not find anyone, who would compare these in such a way. From my understanding the MKE600 would mostly use the internal R6 pre-amp and the NTG would use it's own higher quality pre-amp. Did you ever try the NTG?
Thank you for the support! No, unfortunately I’ve never used the NTG nor do bird photography to know how well it performs from afar. That’s a neat feature though, most mics have a pad but I’ve never seen any that can boost! My assumption is, if you’re shooting something from that far away, even if it can pick up sound well enough your signal to noise ratio might be pretty poor so the audio might still not be fully usable.
Did you try to use the grip with a LP-NH, the older model batteries? What was the brand of that grip?
Sure did! Works perfectly fine. This one was from DSTE but I’m sure all of these are just generic knock offs rebranded. The should all be the same if not similar
I love the Urth magnetic filters.
I just discovered you and loved the last couple videos I’ve seen. If you have the time you should keep making videos! Consistency is hard but would love see more in the future
Thank you so much!! Yes I agree, sometimes it’s just hard to find time through regular daily life to post though but I’m working on it for sure! Thanks for the support!!
Sennheiser has more noise than the NTG4. But sounds a bit better...
CAMVATE Quick Release Baseplate is 2 mm to low so the camera plate get stuk on top from rail
Thanks for geat video, i am building the same cage ! But what type model metal thingy cold shoe you using in the top shoe of your camera?
Hi! Do you mean the silver screw? It’s a knurled M4x16 screw. I should have a link in my description for the item. The cage originally comes with two screws on top but all it really does is help align the camera, so you can replace it with one screw and it’ll be enough. I made a detailed breakdown of this cage in another video on my channel, check it out! th-cam.com/video/PIeyZVDwA4A/w-d-xo.html
@inion Graeat, my age 70 so very helpful info you give :) Did you use a focus fallow?
No problem! No I don’t often use one, but if you want to you can add a rail block on the bottom of the cage.
@@SMBYopinion thank you again, like advice. follow focus think it over, Did you use a backplate for external battery?
@lumixS5M2 nope I didn’t, but if you add rails, you definitely can!
Your lighting is terrible. You wave the product around that you are trying to sell, so we can't see it. We don't need to see your face. We need to see more of the product.
Thanks for the tip!
I meant to tell u I did everything u did it’s hard to get to battery now gotta take every thing off still even base plate
Hi, have you tried adjusting the camera all the way back? It really depends on the camera you use as every camera is different. I was able to get to the battery fine on mine.
@@SMBYopinion I have Lumix G7 and I have a 35mm lens it’s very short soon upgrade to a longer lens maybe backing cam back will help I’ll let u know soon maybe by next week
@AmillionCo I don’t have that camera but I looked it up and it looks to have an issue where the battery door is quite close to the tripod mount. I think moreso that’s just a design issue. Perhaps you can benefit from a battery door clearance plate kind of like this one: ca-alzodigital.glopalstore.com/products/alzo-liberator-battery-door-clearance-plate-for-panasonic-g7?.alzodigital.com&US&
@@SMBYopinion use this on top my setup i already have ? Or eliminate the manfrotto plate all together
@AmillionCo use it on top of the Manfrotto plate. The Manfrotto plate is used because the quick release is Manfrotto. This piece moves the tripod mount away from the battery door so when you mount your camera on anything (cage, rig, tripod) it has clearance for the door to open. You don’t have to use this exact piece, I just did a quick google search. Do some research on your own, maybe you can find something cheaper or better. Just make sure it is compatible for your camera.
Nice review. Many thanks!
Glad to help!
My cage came with 2 tiny black hex screws at the top for the shoe…. Did yours come like that or did it come with one screw that u replaced ?
Yes it comes with two for the top, mine did too, but you can just replace it with one. All it really does it keeps the cage aligned with the camera. I’ve also done a more detailed breakdown of this cage in a newer video on my channel. Check it out! th-cam.com/video/PIeyZVDwA4A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=A40QXZCma0P2KqFt
@@SMBYopinion ok kool I want to get the screw but it seem so tiny I wanna make sure I get the right one from the pics they look bigger then the tiny ones it comes with
@AmillionCo haha they are small irl. Good luck! Let me know how the build turns out!
Good shit… what did u use the cold shoe adapters on/for ? I see the link in description but I didn’t see u use em in video
Thanks! There was a few 1/4”-20 on the cage, mounted the cold shoe there for stuff like mics or receivers. Essentially to replace the one on the camera, since it’s used to lock the cage in place
@@SMBYopinionoh ok I see now….. that too thumb screw is it M4, or M5 ? And how long is it
Hi, should be M4x16. There’s a link in my description :)
Interesting video!
Thanks!
I focus and recompose on my 5D Classic. It has 9 AF points but the center one is far sharper than the others, hence I do this.
Back in the days I had a 6D, there was like maybe 5 focus points and only the center was cross type lol. Good ol days
i didn't even notice the loop 😭
oh shoot i was just struggling with this issue yesterday... im trying to learn through pracrice on my zv e10... thabk you for the lesson ! 😅
Awesome! Glad I could help! :)
Yeah wow the seni sounds way better on vocals. Thanks!
No problem! Glad I could help!
That's a fantastic lens, a magical product. Shoot some pictures and look at the result. Probably stopped down you see no problems.
Definitely no issues with my copy IQ wise :)
Does this work with r6mk2?
I don’t have a mk2 to try but I believe it can since the mk2 uses the same battery grip model. Not 100% though
If you're running and gunning and want to use different focal lengths you shouldn't be changing lenses. You should be carrying 2 cameras with 2 different focal lengths. For me that would be a 16-35 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8. The new 24-105 f2.8 sounds great. Ill definitely be renting it to give it a try.
Yeah for sure. Though I shoot mostly video so it’s harder to run with two cams. But sounds exciting!! Let us know how it turns out!
@@SMBYopinion That makes sense. I shoot mostly events and then just stills. Almost no video.
Hey, did the camera tells you the battery level or its stays on 100% and switches off immediately when the batteries die?
You mean is the grip affecting the display for battery level? Nope it shows the battery level perfectly fine for me. Although I am using oem batteries though so maybe that’s affecting it?
@@SMBYopinion thanks for the reply. I'm also using OEM batteries and think of getting third party grip rather than spending so much money on oem canon grip.
Move to Sony?
Sennheiser sounds better, IMO.
one person could invent using your front camera as a back camera, and call it new even though it's not. things like this happen a lot for no defined reasoning.
I have been buy ng from KEH since 1983! Great company!
Smallrig all the way, mainly, solely due to the ease of screw-on filters. I never screw on things on matte box anyway, so I bought the smallrig one.
Is the rf 24 - 105 L F4 still worth picking up for a first len
Absolutely, for that price, the range it covers is amazing! Keep in mind, canon also has a mark ii, and sigma also has a 24-105 f4 as well if you want alternatives.
I can get a Olympus om1 with 12-40pro and 40-150pro at this price.
you can also get an iphone for a grand. so? Not on the same echelon of quality
@@olivertrees yes, you're right, they're not the same quality, I believe OM1 with 2 pro lens has higher quality.
@@zaifaxian ha, that's pretty delusional
