How To Save Money On Arturia Software 😍
The Malevolent was TERRIBLE, the build was like soup and it made the Korg mini look like a tank! Found it very limited tonally and it lasted just 2 weeks with me
That's interesting. Specs look good on paper but I can't imagine any build worse than the Mini 🫢
@@IanWaugh Aye, you're right...I had the FS of the MS20 and it was a TANK, loved that thing. I'm jinxed though...just returning mty Grandmother as it's got loads of defects :( P.S. great vid, made your opinion piece useful and relevant to everyone, thank you
@@Farold_Haltermeyer Thank you for your kind comments. Sorry to hear there's probs with your GM 😢
@@IanWaugh have you ever been told you have a bit of Dennis Norden about your delivery?
@@Farold_Haltermeyer Ha! Ha! Nope. I think he had a great delivery. Not quite there yyet 😊
Ian you missed something important. They did in fact answer your question. The limitation will be addressed in a future product. This is exactly why the JD-08 doesn’t do class compliant USB audio. Why did they give themselves more work maintaining a proprietary audio driver when they could have just made it class compliant? Same reason. They are reserving must-haves for a future product offering that unites their hardware with patch management and audio mixing and the lot. Owners will have no choice but to buy into that because they left us no way around it that isn’t terribly inconvenient.
Not heard that, especially at the time of making the video. What's the new product?
@@IanWaugh you think they'd tell me? But it's the only way of making sense of these limitations. The way to think about it is, you buy a second DAW like Logic, and you wonder why you can't load all of the Logic plugins you just paid for into Ableton. I mean, you paid for the functionality, but they won't let you use it! We've gotten used to that because they all do this...they are trying to sell the platform, not the functionality. And Roland probably is or was envisioning a platform to succeed the Aira system (which had a special mixer component iirc) where you plugged all these things into a mixer with its own USB hub no audio cables needed and everything magically linked to Roland Cloud but offered hardware hands-on control. And they didn't want some competitor being able to do the same with their boutiques. They may have abandoned that effort if they decided not enough people would buy it, and then never bothered to open up the boutiques after that.
@@PeterJensen7 I guess that's one way to try to make sense of it I just think it was a poorly-thought out idea from the start and they totally failed to do a proper job or remove the bugs.😠 Really bad show coming from a once-premium synth manufacturer 😠
Stepic is fantastic, alongside Harmony Bloom it is my go to for sequencing, especially Stepic’s 8 modulation lanes means you can create infinitely evolving sequences
Yes, indeed, it' a clever bit of kit 👍
now I know why film scores by Hans Zimmer for example will catch me so - thank you for your examples and the very helpful explanations

I think someone here did mention the difference but, alas, I don't remember what it was 😊
Ian, what an excellent video. This is the first youtube tutorial I've seen for 'ambient music composition' that actually shows some composition and not someone twiddling software knobs! This was so useful and I'll be applying these lessons in my projects.

@@generoley Ha! Ha! Good stuff! I keep chugging along 😊
Hi Ian this is awesome but I have a question do you have some sort of method you use to pick what instruments to use in you music.
Hi Paul - thank you. That's a very good question. I often start by playing through a synth or library to find an interesting sound that 'suggests' a music line or style. I then often know what sort of sounds might go with it and often use Komplete to search for suitable candidates. But to be honest, it's usually a bit ad hoc 😊
hi, is the headphone output stereo?
Yes 😊

Great track! Would you be willing to share your process in terms of synths used etc?

Another masterpiece!
<blush> Shucks! But keep em coming 😊 Thank you very much 👍
Thanks for this, Ian.. masterful piece of music as always! I love the way you have balanced everything in the mix and nothing gets lost or drowned out by the more upfront elements of the track..even the faintest twinkle can be heard clearly! A real joy to listen..thanks again. 😌👍
Thank you Dan. Really appreciate you listening and your comments 👍
Deep and mysterious! I love the use of flutes and wind synths you used for this!! The sparse percussion is a very nice touch, glad you didn't interrupt with a cliche' bombastic explosion. (Probably something I would have had a hard time doing... 🤣😉) An interesting contrast to the bright colorful video images. This makes me feel that even in daylight there are many unanswered mysteries lurking in the jungle during broad daylight. 10/10!!

EXCELLENT...5stars wonderful soundtrack and video. The drums really add a nice touch to the music, are you playing those on keys or are they loops? Great video images of these beautiful creatures..what they're doing to the Amazon for $$$$$ is criminal. Really enjoyed this one Ian.
Thank you, Richard. Yes, they are cutting down one of our greatest natural resources. But what's that compared to the mighty $ 😠 The drums were sort of a loop😊

Cool, thanx 😄👍
The Model D is *the* synthesizer-that thing uses discrete topology and hand-wiring. The prices are never going to be low for a synth manufactured like that, but it’s a classic. I’m happy with my Subsequent 37 and Minitaur, so it does not appeal to me. Comparing a Behringer Model D with its janky-ass build quality to a hand-wired synth with discrete circuits is ridiculous. It’s two different markets. It’s the beauty of capitalism-if you want your janky-ass Chinese-made B Model D, go for it. If you want to tell yourself that janky-ass synth is “the same thing as a $5K synth with hand-wiring,” go for it. Whatever. Who friggin’ cares? Conversely, if you want to drop the $5K, do it. The handwringing over this is ridiculous. If you lived behind the old iron curtain, you’d get the people’s synth, you’d like it or else. There…you got me to watch and comment.
I honestly don’t know what’s worse: complaining about having a choice or the Behringer Sleestaks who think they “stuck to the man” because they bought a $200 synth.
Yes I did! Result 😄
Can you may be sometime breakdown some vidna obmana track? From river of appearance album, for example
It's easier - sometimes 😊 - to break down my own tracks so in this case, alas, not 😭
@@IanWaugh oops, my bad, for some reason i thought that this is the series where you deconstruct famous ambient track, it always puzzled me how vidna obmana achieves such ethereal feeling in his tracks :)

Got it about 4 months ago but just "digging in" now. This is an astoundingly well thought out and executed tool! Thanks for a great video!!
I have yet to fully plumb its depths...😊👍
Great video. Digitakt has a feature called micro timing that lets you shift notes back or forward in time in micro amounts. Does Stepic have this feature? If not can it be implemented in a future update. Thanks.
No and probably but you'd need to ask the developer, he seems open to suggestions 😊
@@IanWaugh Thanks Ian. It surprises me that not many step sequencers have micro timing. The Beatstep Pro has it on it's drum sequencer but not on the melody tracks. The newer Keystep Pro has it on all 4 tracks. Maybe I am over thinking this but it seems such a handy feature. Cheers. Paul

Great tutorial! One thing you can do to add saturation is pass the output back into the filter via the external input
Thank you 👍 Great tip, will give that a try 👍
Great video! Thanks for sharing your tips. We agree on many points. The lack of faders on the Komplete, unacceptable on such an expensive keyboard. And I already had two Arturias Essentials (Keylab 61 MK3 and Minilab MK3), both with very bad keys. I sold both. Some M-Audio keyboards too, very bad keys, except the Oxygen 61, which is exactly the keyboard I bought after seeing your video LOL. I was about to buy the Komplete Kontrol S61 MK3, but with a pain in my heart, because deep down I knew that such an expensive keyboard wouldn't fully suit me. I already had an Oxygen 61 and I can say, they are the best keys you can find on a studio midi controller, in this price range. And the functionality, once you have set it up, are great as well!
Thanks Michel 👍 I think the Mk 3s are more for those who want deep Komplete and Kontakt integration which, of course, it excels at. But it does fall down as a general MIDI controller 🤔
I normally can’t resist an Arturia upgrade. Mainly though I just noodle at the keyboards. I bought 3 and 4 but really haven’t used them much/ I’ll be skipping 5 this go around
Yes, I don't think many people are going to use all of them...
I'm an old novice transitioning a neglected hobby into something more fulfilling. I truly appreciate your videos. The educational content is filling in some of the holes in my knowledge. Much appreciated.
Very kind, thank you, so glad they are helpful 👍
