  • You have a Native Instruments' S Series Mk 3 keyboard which doesn't want to talk to your computer. Here is what I think is the most common problem. It's mentioned in troubleshooting forums but not fully deetailed or explained and often gets lost in the multitude of other suggestions.
    Here I explain what I believe to be the most common cause of these problems. I detail my own personal experiece - and solution - and include additional suggestions which may help.

    Hi Ian, just want to thank you for pointing me in the right direction with my problem. And to be honest, I had no clue that the USB-C port was the one who kept me frustrated for 2 days. There was absolutely no way I was able to connect my new KK-MK3 to my Studio-PC. On my laptop the connection was working fine though but not on my studio-PC. So when you mentioned the USB-C port could be the cause of my problems, I changed the KK-MK3 to a USB-A port. Guess what? It worked right away. I still don't know why my USB-C is not able to connect but my problem is solved. So thanks a lot. I only wished I had seen your post two days earlier. 😁

      Hi Jo - glad you got it working 👍
      It's a weird problem and I don't understand the technicalities. Is the C socket connected directly to the motherboard or is it on a plug-in card? Mine's on a card and that seems to be causing the problem 😤

      @@IanWaugh Hi Ian, my USB-C port is directly connected on the mothenoard, which is a Gigabyte Aorus B550 Master motherboard. So not exactly a cheap one. The specs in the manual mention the following: "The reversible USB port supports the USB3.2 Gen 2 specification and is compatible to the USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0 specification". Don't know if you are still investigating the problem but maybe this helps you or some other users having the same issue. Good luck and thanks once again!

      @@jofuhren Well above my expertise level, and it still seems to be puzzling others including NI who don't seem to have a fix although can't be sure it's only a Mk iii problem - it may also affect other devices but I haven't gone looking for any. Got the Mk iii working which was the object of the exercise 😊

    Even on my Mk2 (I’m not going up to the Mk3), USB connectivity is random at best with the KK software, but works fine outside KK - even with Live or Logic or Omnisphere or Kontakt standalone. I have a 15v 1.5A power adapter for mine which seems to help. It was more so I could control external gear via my mioXL midi hub, but quickly realised it’s not that good as a midi controller anyway. So I bought a Keystep Pro and for running KK on the Mac, I use my Mk2 with the power adapter left plugged in.
    In your situation, I’d contact NI support and see if you got one of the earlier prototypes as I know they’ve had connectivity issues. It should just work on any USB port, even on a USB hub. Power shouldn’t matter - it’s just sending data, not audio as well. Unless it’s the KK software that’s the issue - I’m staying on KK version 2.9.6 until I start to hear good things about KK version 3.

      Hi - well, it's currently working so we'll see how it goes...😊 Had no probs with Mk 2. Just wondering if USB is really as Universal as it should be. I'm pretty sure I don't have an early version. I agree, it's more likely to be a data thing than a power thing. We expect all USB devices to just work - but some just don't 😢

    Hi Ian!
    Doesn't seem very 🤔 Universal...
    Have you contacted the company who built the PC and supplied the "U"SB card as it obviously wasn't fit for purpose. As a company who specialise in Music PCs they need to do a little more research. They are likely to be quite receptive if they are worth their salt.
    As an aside, one issue I have come across many times is that a piece of USB equipment that previously worked fails. This is usually on a laptop, or something that isn't always plugged in. Generally this is because you've plugged it into a different USB socket than the one you first installed it. This is a real PITA, especially at a performance. One solution is to go through the installation process on all ports, but I generally just use the same ports for each device. Best to colour code them - Acrylic paint pens are your friend! I'm not entirely sure, but I think USB sockets are bussed in 4s on the MB, so maybe it's to do with which buss the socket is connected to. In your case Ian with 8 sockets there will be at least 2 busses, 4 on each so maybe it's at Buss level rather than socket level? Either way, give each controller a permanent home!

      Hi David - Thanks for the info 👍
      I think the USB backplane is an off-the-shelf jobbie and probably works with 99% of gear. The company would really need a Mk 3 to check it but I will get in touch and see what they say.
      I have come across the situation about plugging gear into different ports and, as you suggest, I try to keep everything in the same port. Not sure if that's a prob with USB or the OS.
      I've no idea if this is a problrm with other bits of music gear - I was just happy to get it working 😊

    Yeah I have the usb c cable it came with from the host port of the keyboard to the Mac usb c slot… then a usb c cable from the port Next - to the host port on the back of the keyboard with the lightning bolt sign - run that usb c cable to wall plug it in an iphone wall jack.
    I might get a usb c computer hub but my Mac doesn’t power everything I need at the studio here
    Things r getting more complicated made it is a luxury board for sure

      Interesting. I am keen to know more.....I've got the Arturia stuff so I am holding out for a new Keylab. We'll see what happens.
      It's a shame no one has put a touch screen on these things in 2024. @@IanWaugh

    • @IanWaugh
      @IanWaugh  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@axs203 One reason NI gives for not including faders is that they are never in the right position when mixing. What do you use the faders for?
      Everyone's waiting to see what the new Keylabs are like 😊
      A touchscreen, alas, would be useless to me. I also wonder how it would be implemented on a controller although I guess if you can have one on an niPhone you could have one on anything 😊

    • @axs203
      @axs203 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@IanWaugh Yes it baffles me how NI couldn't put faders on or even drum pads when a Keylab Mini 3 I bought for 50 quid has 8 of them on and 8 knobs and 8 pads! Bit stingy ........ and maybe a touchscreen is not the best idea for a controller. The thing is about a touchscreen though is that it very immediate from brain to hand......always loved the Korg Trinity
      Faders are useful to control synths - sometimes I want to turn a knob but use a fader for certain parameters....say balancing the sound of different layers.
      It is quite a pricey controller....I ask myself is it worth it. I suppose it is if you already own Komplete......

    • @IanWaugh
      @IanWaugh  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@axs203 Yeah. I'm with you on the faders. I think NI is positioning it more as a controller for Komplete and Kontakt than as a general MIDI controller. If you're not really into those then probably not the most flexible option. You can, of course, use them on-screen with a mouse and I often do that anyway. It supports NKS 2 and MIDI 2 so that should be nice when it all arrives 😊

    • @IanWaugh
      @IanWaugh  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It might. But the more I think about this - yes, I know, I should get a life 😊 - the more I think it is likely to be some sort of 'disconnect' on the data side of the USB connection. But I don't have sufficient technical expertise.

      Hi Andrew - Yes, it would seem like a power issue. These things have a built-in computer and massive display and I'm surprised that they run off USB at all. Have you tried using a separate power source not directly connected to the computer?
