    You should make a follow-up video with the Taiga Keyboard that's just announced today!
    I personally from the options would probably buy the PWM Malevolent. I have a Voyager so I got the Moog sound covered.
    Also keep in mind Sweetwater prices do not include any kind of taxes and I understand UK prices do include VAT.

    Korg ms20 go up in price when korg stops making them any time again. The mini is like my dad said: you have two kinds of cheap. Cheap that breaks down, and cheap that keeps working. I had 3 recent moogs with issues and you can read about issues with grandmothers online. I wish i got a green ms20 FS when they were about 1k…

    I remember “Never Mind the Quality . . . Feel the Width” - about a tailors in London, funny show: ‘Everybody Out!”
    I’ve had a Grandmother since it came it, it still has a great deal of value to me: it’s meant to be played like Rick Wakeman playing the keys, not Aphex Twin twiddling the knobs. I love the colours, it sets it apart from the black’n’silver brigade. The patch points and MIDI make the unit an excellent conversion machine, connecting MIDI devices like the Octatrack or my DAW with my Eurorack modular gear. The keyboard is excellent, as is the build: it’s a properly heavy synth. Quality is an important to me, I believe it will last longer than, say, a Kong MS20. It uses a classic subtractive synth model so it is easy to interpret and patch them components: there are no menus, just a few features buried deep in the MIDI implementation.
    An important factor - Moog have changed owners since I bought my Grandmother. I don’t even know if they are still making them but before long they will be looking to release other products.
    I do wish I’d gone for the Matriarch with all the additional features (I wish I’d had enough to buy a EMS VCS3 to be honest) but I won’t get rid of the Grandmother, it’s limited but it’s too useful and it sounds great.

    My ambient music setup centers around an analog island consisting of a Korg ARP 2600M and a Korg Minilogue XD, both connected to a Novation SL MK3. While the Minilogue XD isn't purely analog (only two of its three oscillators are analog), it's a crucial part of my setup.
    I've been contemplating which analog synthesizer to add next, and I've narrowed it down to either the Moog Matriarch or the Moog Grandmother. After careful consideration, I'm leaning toward the Matriarch. Here's why: Although the Grandmother is an excellent synthesizer, its monophonic capabilities would largely overlap with what my ARP 2600M already offers. The Matriarch, on the other hand, would significantly expand my sonic palette by providing:
    Additional voices for chord work and evolving pads
    More comprehensive modulation options
    Stereo sound design capabilities
    Enhanced ambient music possibilities
    When specifically considering ambient music production, the Matriarch's ability to generate complex, evolving stereo textures would be more valuable than the Grandmother's simpler architecture and built-in spring reverb.

    • @IanWaugh
      @IanWaugh  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Richard - Good setup. Yes, the Matriarch is definately the one to go for. Wen I bought my Grandmother it was about 2x the price of the Grandmother, now it's about 1.6 times which is far better value 👍

    You are fortunate to own the ‘dark’ version. They are less easy to get hold of and as you note, seem to command a higher price than the garish and unsettling standard version. Similar situation with the Matriarch

I have a Sequential Take 5 and a Behringer Model D, so a poly and a mono (and a TD 3 but use it very little); can be worth to upgrade my setup taking a grandmother? My idea was: for bass/leads Grandmother and Model D (1 for bass and 1 for leads) and Take 5 for Strings,pads, etc. I really love pastel colored version and the name and that sound but in italy costs around 1.300 euros now and from my beginner point of view the sound of my model D seems very similar. • @IanWaugh
      @IanWaugh  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Francesco - When you're just building a studio or starting out it's a good idea to get synths that complement each other and don't duplicate sounds that the other synths can do. Although the Model D and Grandmother are different they also have a lot of overlap.

    Hey Ian. Great review of objectively knob-y features vs price. However, sonic features of GM, Matriach, and other synths although arguably subjective, are at least 50% of the reason to buy one synth over another. I've had my GM for almost 5 years and it was a love-hate relationship until I added three off-board hardware effects: reverb, delay, and audio preamp. Now i have a synth that delivers the punch and other-worldliness i hoped for with GM out of the box. I completely agree that GM is a fickle machine but certainly through perseverance and a few off board effects, it is now quite wonderful to play. Full disclosure: my GM made two return trips for in-warranty repair. I purchased the extended warranty.

    • @IanWaugh
      @IanWaugh  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hey Ernest - Sorry to hear you've had probs. In spite of the hand-made/made in the USA claims, I don't think Moog is any more reliable than any other synth

    I had been tossing back n forth between the grandmother and the matriarch.
    So I seriously look at the grandmother on video to see how high the ceiling is as far as sound goes. I already have a micromoog. It seems the grandmother is an updated version of the micromoog with reverb and modern design and patch/sync features.
    Then I just watched you here. The money will strapped me in/down, but I. have to go with matriarch.
    Not all that happy as far as the price goes.
    But I'll buy it once, take care of the bloody thing. It's my last synth that I ever buy. I always wanted a mini moog. Just too much money now, and there's an abundance of synths out there now. I always wanted the alesis A6. I cant trust the hardware cause of the age. Again, also the price. I might as well buy the software version. I bought the moog soundset in hopes one day, getting the matriarch to satisfy my lust for moog gear. All because I just couldn't afford the mini moog when I was younger. Well the matriarch, dfam, mother 32, and subharmonicon should do it for the money
    Love watching ya speak on this. It was confirmation for me.👍
