Appreciate the history on Gilman and the mines. The first mine you went into, you called it a mineshaft, mine shafts go straight down you went into what's called an adit. I went into the same adit and stopped right where it turned, so you went a few feet farther than I did. Usually, the most dangerous part of a mine is the adit. It looked like this mine was definitely safer as you went deeper, but I bet it didn't go much farther looked more exploratory, probably never had ore carts in it.

I went to school here k-3. Mrs smith was my 1st grade teacher, my second grade teacher used to be into garfield and give out awards for prizes. Aww the good ol days

You know, you go to your local mall dozens, perhaps hundreds of times, taking for granted that it'll just always be there, and it's so routine that you never think to record things until they're gone. Even by the time I was in college, it was simply a glorified Target with the mall entrance boarded over and blocked off. Now the Southridge of my childhood exists only in memory, lost to time.

They did some remodeling but chiseled out a little area on the left of the gate if you still want to get in, there is also another entrance a bit further but it requires an angle grinder and is pretty sketchy.

I went to school here! Just drove by the old site today and started looking online to find photos and came across this. I attended probably 1991-1993. It was only Kindergarten - 3rd when I was there. It's been demolished now. People kept breaking in doing thousands of dollars worth of damage. Someone even started a fire there.

I love the spot. I take my dog there every morning to run the football field. Nobody looks after it though. Transients sneak in and out smh

My grandparents lived in Gilman from some time in the 1950's until about 1970. I used to visit them there. My grandfather worked in the mine, first as a miner and later as a "carwhacker" (maintenance mechanic), and after that as a school teacher. My grandmother was also a school teacher there. Gilman was a "company town", owned by New Jersey Zinc comapany. Gilman was pretty much buried in feet of snow from December until April. In snows a lot there, and it's at a high enough altitude that the snow doesn't really melt until April or May.

I grew up in Kansas as a child, my mother would take me and my brother to this park almost every summer, but I'll be honest, it wasn't as great of a waterpark as other people thought, I've been to way better waterparks as a kid compared to here. But besides that fact, I was a sophomore in high school when this event occurred. One of my classmates, was also a lifeguard working there, I believe she wasn't working the date the event took place, but I do remember her making a "now deleted" post about the event on her Instagram at the time, because her coworkers were also her friends that were working as lifeguards that day, I remember her writing in the post that she felt very sad for her co workers who had to witness that event unfold. Overall everyone at school was talking about that event not to long after it happened.

it hurts to see the place in this abandoned condition. this was my favorite place to go to. I understand they had to close but i wish they never did.
