Macabre, In English I pronounce it more like Macaab with the re being silent. Whereas in French I definitely roll the "re" at the end. (I like odd words like this)
Seems like Tarantino is one of the few filmmakers capable of throwing a surprise at Lucia. I remember when this movie opened the reviews were not great, but I liked it. The heist/double cross genre is one of my favorite plots and I like guessing where the story is going. I'm very seldom right, but most often (if the story and script are good) I'm entertained. The cast in this film is uniformly good and that's another reason I like it. Always fun to watch Sam Jackson and Robert DeNiro work. Pam Grier is the cherry on top. Nice reaction guys.
Thank you :) Yop, Lucia is not able to guess all that will happen when watching a Tarantino movie 😜 and I think that is one of the reasons she likes them so much!
Been a while since I've seen this but it's one of my favourite tarantino films. The heist/final act of the film is a microcosm of the rest, and of its lead. Jackie isn't the fastest gun in town, or a larger than life con-man bombastically sweeping everyone up in her charisma. She is dignified, unassumingly intelligent, quietly charming, and with her slow social scheming eventually outmaneuvers everyone. She triumphs through the mundane.
Elmore Leonard was an acclaimed western and mystery writer known for his dialogue. Hombre with Paul Newman, Get Shorty Travolta Gene Hackman, out of Sight George Clooney and J Lo are three examples of movies adapted from his writing. Get Shorty is a lot of fun
As Mozart asks the Emperor (in Milos Foreman's Amadeus), "Too many notes? Which ones would you have me take out?" In other words, I think you're shortchanging this Tarantino masterpiece... a bit. You haven't hurt my feelings, and I value your honesty, but I genuinely think you've missed something... and I have a theory as to how that happened... Compared to a lot of other Tarantino films, Jackie Brown is a bit of a slow burn, but I find that I'm captivated by every minute of this film (such good dialogue, music, suspense, cinematography...!). It's a perfectly crafted and paced film, IMO -- with SO much style -- but on a first-time viewing it can run counter to expectations -- especially if you're expecting something along the lines of Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, or Inglourious Basterds (blam! pow! splat! gurgle! kaboom!). I suggest you two (delightful psychos) return to this film at some point, as it gets better with each viewing. DeNiro's performance is like a metaphor for the film: subdued/not flashy, but brilliant.
Yes, it's the same reason I say it the same way; "what 20 minutes; what hour?" They won't know. Yes, they didn't even touch on DeNiro! Would he be part of the hour that gets cut out?
Might very well be, I liked it more when I was rewatching the movie while editing this reaction xD Still not my favourite Tarantino film, but it does have a lot of style for sure
What a joy to see you react to this. It is one of my favorites. Pam Grier is amazing. And what a cast, it's just super fun. (And I disagree that the movie was too long and that it was slow going. I really don't know how you could cut this down by an hour. HOW??? The beginning was necessary to set things up, to explain who the characters were and their motivations and relationships. I think that sometimes younger people have little patience for slow burns and build ups, that they need to have more and faster paced action to stay interested. But to each his own!)
Its strange because in my case for instances I love some slow burn movies that are quite long! I do think this is one that actually gets better when you rewatch it to be honest ☺️
Samual L Jackson's hairstyle is what pimps and old school gangsters wore in the 70s-90s. Look at old photos of Ice T when he was coming up. He was a gangster and wore the same style.
Elmore Leonard is one of my favourite writers, he creates some super characters. Several of his books have been turned into movies with varying degrees of success. Besides Jackie Brown (Rum Punch), my favourites are Get Shorty, Out of Sight and 3:10 to Yuma (both the original and the 2007 remake). I like slower paced movies if it is warranted, but i agree that maybe Jackie Brown could be a little shorter.
Check out "Curdled." Tarantino produced it, and I'd describe it as a Tarantino love story between a serial killer and a post-forensic maid. It stars Angela Jones, who played the Colombian taxi driver who drove for Butch in "Pulp Fiction." There's considerable speculation that "Curdled" is her backstory, and if so, it's hilarious. I also think that you two would enjoy Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin in "House Sitter." Both of these films are excellent, but mostly overlooked by other reactors.
Saw this in the theatre when it came out. Blew me away! 50:57: NO, NO! Never say that it's unnecessary! It's character development and building up to the moment! Tarantino's story arc is perfection! 52:29: I hate it when people say they would take 20 minutes out. What 20 minutes? What hour would you take out? Try to do it and you will realize how wrong you are, omg. 57:00: I think what Tarantino was doing was certainly more blacksploitation but also, in the tone of Elaine May's Mikey & Nicky, although not as unsettling because of the angle. Perhaps part of what you want taken out has to do with how her character changes when she's playing Ordell, Max and Ray. It's not split personality but she's walking a fine line with all of them and how she plays each and chances it all. She doubles down in the end. You need that development to get there. Whoa. Tarantino's best.
Although we seemed a bit harsh on the film, it is and impressive work 👌🏻 and it gets better on each viewings! Jackie Brown is definitely one of my favourite characters
Thank you. Elmore Leonard, who wrote "Rum Punch" (1992) the novel that was adapted into the movie "Jackie Brown," has written more than a few novels and screenplays that have been made into movies. "Out of Sight" (1998), which is a personal favourite, shares a character with "Jackie Brown" though the stories are completely independent of each other. "Get Shorty" (1995) and "3.10 to Yuma" (2007) are both very good though I have a soft spot for the earlier "Valdez Is Coming" (1971).
Tarantino in my opinion always makes movies that are his version off other genres or old movies. Jackie Brown is his version of waht in the 1970s was referd to as Blackexplotiation films. Films were black people were the protagonists. Pam Grier the protagonist was part of that era. As an example of my opinion you should watch the 1967 film The Dirty Dozen and later Tarantinos movie Inglorious Bastard.
The dirt dozen is NOT a blaxploitation movie. Lol! I don't think the are even any black people in that movie so you clearly don't understand what blaxploitation is. They one thing you got write is she was the queen of that drama. Maybe Google blaxploitation movie list.
Tarantino also wrote From DUSK TILL Dawn with Robert Rodriguez. They’re friends and have a very similar writing style. Dont look into that one watch it blind. Also my fav Rodriguez film is Desperado. Hardly anyone reacts to that one.
Never seen From Dusk Till Dawn (although I know about the twist in the middle of the movie 😬) but Desperado is quite know around here! Maybe its because the main villain is played by a very known portuguese actor: Joaquim de Almeida.
@@ptthatswhatshesaid If you like scary stuff with a little dark humor and crime sprinkled into it and a lot of violence. I mention it, as it's a Quentin Tarantino movie from 1996.
Tarantino mixes up the order of chapters to keep the build ip of characters from getting boring, but he didn't here. I think if he went that way it would be better for you but then it's just more of the same he did before (and after).
You might be right 🤷🏻♂️ its not very Often that I think that a movie could have been shorter. Usually Im the opposite 😅 Still love the movie, just not in love with the pace
I think he was thinking about going with her. He was thinking about retirement anyway so i think he was taking that time to think. Jackie only told the entire truth to Ray. They really were partners.
She does seem to be very practically minded, unsentimental, and an enjoyer of violence. I like her but the kind of clever that she is can be off-putting at times.
The only Tarantino film I liked and I can rewatch it over and over again.
I’ve always thought this movie has aged better than a lot of his, what we’re considered mega hits.
True Romance next please...
Oohh this
So fucking cool
I do need to add movies that were written by Tarantino to the list of him that she as not seen yet yeah!
True Romance is the best movie Quentin Tarantino never directed.

I think Lucy would enjoy the insanity of Pam Grier's exploitation era - Coffy, Foxy Brown, and Black Mama White Mama are some of her best.
