The Japanese Narrative Style of Super Mario Odyssey
Just a tip for Japanese pronunciation, all vowels are always pronounced the same way. A sounds like "ah", i like "ee", u like "ooh", e like "eh", and o like "oh". So Miyamoto is Mee-yah-moh-toh, not Mai-yah-moh-toh.
This helps a lot. Thank you! I'm going to screenshot this and put in my notes app.
Wish somebody would just document how crazy the glitches of the original game was. I discovered HORRIBLE, FREAKY stuff outside the boundaries. Think Pokemon was bad? I had my entire cartridge corrupted with the Ghost from the Bay frozen on my screen. This happened in 2003, and I wish I could prove how bad I broke my game. I stupidly threw the cartridge in the trash.
And won? More like the franchise survived the bad choices they made with II. While I like the concept, the execution wasn't great. If they remade Zelda II today, it would most likely be much like Breath of the Wild with more towns, dungeons, etc.. Even though Zelda II could be considered as the direct ancestor that inspired these two, I never liked that game. Too difficult, annoying, tedious. All those barely avoidable fights. Anyway, there's a good reason why Zelda 3 and 4 and 5 and so on forth returned to the Zelda 1 formula. ☝☝☝☝
Zelda II was well-received, so there was nothing to, "survive."
@@MalabarTheGreatIf it was so great and well received as you say, why did it return to the Zelda 1 formula and the one ones that resemble Zelda 2 are BOTW and TOTK? ☝☝☝☝
Zelda II sold 4.61 million units on the FAMICOM/NES back in the day. Which is about the same amount for Link to the Past (4.61) and Phantom Hourglass (4.76). And more than Link's Awakening (3.83), Majora's Mask (3.36), Oracle of Seasons and Ages combined (3.99), Wind Waker (4.43), Minish Cap (1.76), Spirit Tracks (2.96), Skyward Sword (3.67), and A Link Between Worlds (4.28). To answer your question about why Nintendo went back to the Zelda 1 formula you have to look at how game development worked/works at Nintendo and at the time it was made. There was no set formula yet. And the game at the time didn't begin as a Zelda title but was experimenting with sword play. Miyamoto wasn't involved with the project as the director. When he saw what the others were working on he thought it would be a good idea to make it a Zelda title to boost sales since that game was doing well and it could easily be tied to that franchise. So Zelda elements were added in as development progressed. Obviously it sold well enough and was received well enough. And even though the style went back to Zelda 1, there are still a lot of elements of Zelda II that have been carried over to the swords combat. Especially in the 3D Zeldas where its influence will be seen a lot more.
Yeah. I mean, I get it. Zelda II is down there near the bottom of my list, but I also see why some people really like it. I just try to have a nuanced and pragmatic approach. But that doesn't always get 'dem hearty juicy engagement clicks 'n comments.
@@SuperMetaFun It's at the very bottom of my list. I also didn't much like Majora's Mask, even though I beat that. It's like the least Zelda game there is IMO. ☝☝☝☝ Btw, I don't remember the sword pogo sticking carrying over to any other games from Zelda II. ☝☝☝☝ Which sword tricks were you saying that carried over? Slashing with the sword? That can be traced back to Zelda 1 anyways. ☝☝☝☝
Starting to think the whole egg thing is inspired by the 1985 Anime Film Angel's Egg
You should go watch that movie btw
I looked it up. Looks beautiful! And it's going to get a theatrical release stateside this year for it's 40th anniversary. www.yahoo.com/entertainment/angel-egg-us-theatrical-release-170723204.html I'll have to watch it.
The DX version is more of a remaster than a remake
True statement.
It's a much better game than Metroid 1, but I just cannot like it as either a standalone game or a remake. It is a bad mush of Super Metroid and Fusion(All the decent parts carried over from those games are better there, not here), it changes the structure of Metroid 1's progression too much to provide an experience that is "similar, but more polished"(The only time a sequence break is fun and natural feeling is when you can break into Ridley's lair from an alternate entrance and skip the miniboss giving you super missiles. Which is wild because "open map, find your own sequence" is the whole essence of Metroid 1) and its original parts(e. g. stealth section) are decent ideas executed meh at best.
Hmmm, honestly I feel like you undersold how much the Switch remake changes the gameplay. In the original and DX game, you had to choose which two items you had equipped, including the sword. In the new game, though, you can have two items equipped at all times, and the sword isn't unequipped ever, near as I can tell.
You may be right there. I think more than that quality of life improvement with the buttons and equiping is the movement in general. They kept Link's movement restrained to the 8 directions like the original. Except now with the 3D model he can actually face in 8 directions and not just in the cardinal four. That small change really changes how you can attack and approach enemies. It's a huge change. Retrospectively, (ha!) I wish I took a moment to discuss that.
3:25 why does he keep pronouncing "consoles" as "councils"? even the auto-generated captions are hearing it.
one minute in and i can tell you like movies with mikey :)
To say that Movies with Mikey was a huge influence to my approach and style would be an understatement.
This was a fantastic look at Link's Awakening! Thanks for sharing your analysis.
I absolutely love Link's Awakening, its my favourite Zelda and I love seeing content like this that shouts about how amazing it is. My only nitpick is that neither Link or the Player know it is a dream and that destroying the bosses destroys the world until the Face Shrine. That's a big and powerful reveal and I think you should've recognised the impact of that on the plot.
The use of other Nintendo characters from other games helps lend to the surreal feel and dream like qualities of the game. Probably a happy accident. Great vid man!
Link’s awakening is by far my favorite and in my opinion, the best Zelda game.
Sitting in the playroom playing A links awakening in the house I own with my kids, 9 ,8 and 5. Then I notice in the corner of my eyes the lamp. The lamp. ....
RIP David Lynch... 😥
A true great.
Nintendo being "who cares" about IP in the past sure is funny considering how they act today.
At the very least it was their own IP so...
Are these re-uploads? I swear I've seen all of your videos previously, and yet I keep watching new uploads anyway! That's how good they are.
Yes. When I first started I was a little heavy with copyrighted assets so I've been removing them to see if they would fair better in reach. Also I wanted to fix some of the effect issues. I am glad you are enjoying all of them still!
If Link to the Past really defined the gameplay of Zelda, Link's Awakening defined the feeling of Zelda. The goofy, weird characters with their own stories, the expressive sprite work, the bombastic adventure masking the lingering feeling of melancholy. Pretty impressive that a Gameboy game accomplished all that.
This game was definitely a labor of love from the team.
Fantastic video! Love your content

What's a secret to everybody?! Lol
The reason mother brain sounds like Audrey 2 is because I’m pretty sure it was the same actor. Great video my guy! 💪💪☺️👊😎 Confirmed: Levi Stubbs actor and singer voiced BOTH Mother Brain and Audrey 2. 😃 He passed in 2008. 🙏
A Link to the past is what got me into playing Zelda it just glues you in
So people shit on Zelda 2 but consider this, lots of enemies in Zelda 2 have remained mainstays including goriyas, zols, and lizalfos, towns and variety of that started in Zelda 2, spells in Zelda 2 have continued to stay in future Zelda’s including shield, fire, and thunder, and dark link who continues to pop up in different contexts started from Zelda 2. I could go on but you get the point. Yeah Zelda 2 is tough, it’s cryptic and sometimes it’s flat out unfair death mountain and great palace are the PRIME examples but the rpg elements of leveling up were innovative as hell at that time, the music is absolute fire, and honestly the combat for a game from 1988 was wild! Just something to consider from someone who played Zelda 2 as a kid when it was first out!! 😁😁💪👊 Big add though, Zelda 3 is amazing and still to this day is my favorite Zelda ever! I know it’s nostalgia and I don’t care. That game was magical to me at age 11!! 😍😍
Awesome video 🥂
Zelda 2 is amazers. It just has a bad rap for changing the formula. I enjoy the game and if they remade it in the style of a Metroid Dread... I'd buy it now.
Adventure of linknis the best of any zelda... I'd trade all other titles to get a sequel to it
14:53 I'm sorry. Did they miss a memo or something because Mario's weapon IS JUMPING ON HIS ENEMIES!!!
20:30 Actually there are three possible locations for the lamp. The chest in Link's house, the chest in the secret entrance just past your uncle, and the chest next to Zelda. Opening up any of these chests when you already have the lamp yields some rupees instead. Main reason for this is if you are defeated after rescuing Zelda, your starting point is in the cell with her (right where the chest is). So if you didn't grab the lamp before rescuing Zelda, you'd be screwed if the lamp wasn't there.
Is that Paul Rudd at 7:19??
Yes it most certainly is.
What's the music you used for the closing?
You made a Zelda video essay fun… I subscribed
10:46 Don't forget, having a map in general was innovative on it own!
You've got like 20 seconds of dead air around the 3:15 mark
That four-hooked symbol is a swastika when it’s oriented diagonally. It is a manji when it’s oriented horizontally, which is an ancient Vedic charm adopted by Buddhism and as such has no connection to white supremacy or fascism.
I'm loving this series, great analysis, but can the "clipping volume, too loud because funny" joke please be done already?
9:03 - Just casually showing how to finish Super Mario World. 😁 I'd been unable to figure that out! I'm actually rather happy to discover the solution by paying attention to the background of a video like this.
Great video! Link and Samus also jave parallel power-ups, like bombs to find hidden areas and a grappling mechanic to cross gaps. I've also always loved how when Metroid hit 3D, it basically turned into a FPS version of Zelda 1 with Prime.
why do people treat zelda 2 like garbage??? the game litteraly only asks for skill an patience, just like the first zelda, yes the translation is cryptic... JUST LIKE THE FIRST ZELDA idk dude the game has done so much for the series you cannot do a video on what made zelda by just dunking on this game. And what??? the game isn't fun?? learning to the ennemy patterns, solving the dungeons, the overworld quests, discovering the multiple fighting techniques isn't fun? You didn't understand it or maybe you don't have the patience to develop the skill needed to handle the fights, then it's fine, just don't dunk on it for that reason, people love dark souls nowadays yet zelda 2 still gets dunked on? fuck this world.
Zelda 2 discourse got you black pilled I see? For me it's like using every bit of energy I have just to make it to the next day and be in the same situation.
That hole in the dungeon floor had me puzzled for days! I kept falling in and missing the platform. It took me days as a kid to figure out you had to actually fall from the top to reach.
Zelda || was my first Zelda game. How dare you skip this one? As a kid I loved it! The shift between over-world and side scrolling was amazing. Shame!
Your videos are excellent! I'm certain you'll become more well-known soon! I've been binging through your catalog and loving it--so thank you
let’s all admit it, a modern 2d zelda could be pretty sweet theoretically
💙
I am liking, commenting, and subscribing.
Ehem... It's pronounced "Mee-yah-moh-toh" spelled Miyamoto
At this point I'm convinced he's doing it to get a reaction. The sad thing is that it takes away from the video and makes me less interested in watching. Great videos to be sure, but with the mispronounciations and audio dropout I feel like there are better video essays out there that pretty much say the same thing.
Skipping Zelda 2 is bad. It's foundational. Themes and mechanics from Zelda 2 were carried over and informed the Design of Ocarina of time. You know, the core mainline foundation of Zelda. You need to correct this error. It's a diamond in the rough for sure but its a very important title establishing Zelda as a whole.
Honestly Zelda 2 is amazing and the terrible switch open world games would have been better if they were rpgs like Zelda 2.
Ocarina as a foundation whaaaaaaat
You know I’m not going to disagree with you there. As I played that one I realized I didn’t have anything to really say about outside the context of other Zelda’s. So rather than dedicate its own video I will bring more of it up in its influence on Ocarina of Time and the trajectory of 3D Zeldas.
Yeah Zelda 2 is 🔥and was WAY ahead of it’s time when it first came out, despite the difficulty, unfairness at times and cryptic nature! 👊👊
@@SuperMetaFun An interesting bit of trivia is that the sages in OoT were named after the towns in Zelda 2. But given their respective places in the timeline, the lore would be that the towns were named after the sages instead.
It defined my childhood, that’s for sure. What an amazing game.
i’m just now discovering you and the video quality you keep consistently is very impressive. keep it up!!
Thank you very much!
