    man I just randomly had thought about this and the whole onslaught it brought of people explaining their lives through these little cards. I was fairly young maybe 8-9 or so but I was so sad that people could feel those ways with no one to talk to. Man the 2010s were crazy. I pray any and everyone dealing with mental health challenges makes it over that hump, you aren’t alone!

    Thank you for mentioning how much the author took from Black women's lived experiences as enslaved people right here in this country. We should also talk about the enforced breeding practices since enslaved women were considered of value only if they were regular producers of "product" (enslaved children), so they were required to get pregnant as much as possible (or were just SA' d by the slave-masters and overseers) so that slave holders could grow wealthier. Those women who like to have their weddings at these beautiful looking plantations need to give some thought to the idea that those were basically "(r) ape camps", where women were forced to have children for sale.

    • @DaisyFoko
      @DaisyFoko 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I actually really wanted to talk about this. I just couldn’t find any direct sources for her taking inspiration from the breading plantations, but I’ve talked about it separately on TikTok just as the history lesson. Also people who have weddings at plantations are weirdos. I’m from Texas originally and the south has plenty of beautiful venues without any antebellum ties. There’s literally no reason to have a plantation wedding in my opinion.

    I've always found it a bit of a flawed approach to mesh up things that have already happened, yes, but in widely different circumstances, times and areas of the world. To me, it was less impactful while reading than if Atwood had built on just one phenomenon, because it felt like a bad faith thought experiment. However, this was ten years ago, and I'm astonished at how this book gets more and more relevant by the year, because these wildly different forms of oppression really do seem to be concentrated in current US politics. So there's probably more to this approach than I initially thought.

    • @DaisyFoko
      @DaisyFoko 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s a very valid perspective and I like that you were like maybe there’s more to this approach than I thought because I think a lot of people who read the book in school echoed that sentiment of like yes these are all extreme instances, but it’s even more extreme for them to be happening simultaneously. I talked about that a lot with my dad actually and he pretty much shared your perspective in the last few years. He has also been like hmmmm

    Very good video, but I have to add the clarification that during the totalitarian regime in Argentina, the "breeding" wasn't done for racial purposes nor did that play a factor, just as a form of general control, since the people executed and tortured weren't discriminated per se, everyone living under dictatorships was a target. If anything, it depended whether the commanders in charge of the torture centers felt like keeping the children.

    Also on the forced surrogacy aspect, in American Slavery, black women were forced to give birth to create more laborers for the white masters. And on another note when Fred takes June to the secret men's club, it reminds me of when white masters would take on black women as mistresses.

      @ that isn’t to say other religions aren’t a problem. However Islam is inherently much worse not only because of the beliefs many of its followers hold (a moderate Muslim is about as bad as a right wing evangelical) Any ideology that attempts to deny basic rights like free speech, bodily autonomy, equality, is a problem. IMO we should not be trying to force people not to say bad things. Fascism is never brought about by a majority. Fascism is always the socially acceptable view and if you take the premises of various fascist ideologies to be true then they make sense. Any ideology that otherises people and strips them of their rights for the benefit of society as a whole is fascist. It doesn’t matter if we have intolerant people saying intolerant things provided rights are constitutionally guaranteed for all. History shows it is when rights are selectively denied for groups “everyone knows are bad” that you introduce loopholes whereby you can deny certain people rights like free speech or bodily autonomy because they are supposedly intolerant or dangerous. The “paradox of tolerance” and those who promote denying rights of people they disagree with IMO is a gateway to fascism. Equal rights guaranteed by a constitution, democracy, free speech, and rights to bodily autonomy and no death penalty. These are the most important aspects to a free society. Trying to punish people for breaking social taboo or for speech is what leads to fascism, as does religion or strictly held and tautological moral standards. Any ideology that uses its own doctrine as justification is dangerous and is ideology over pragmatism. Islam is the biggest threat to women’s rights in my country certainly. In American it is probably Christianity, but here in the UK we are sleepwalking into the medieval era with laws protecting the religious feelings of people who worship a rapist. Religion can easily be twisted to do evil. Vigilance in the form of maintaining the freedoms of those we despise the most is imperative. Women are not property, they are feiends

    • @coethiel

    Mormons to this day also employ the "snitch on your partner" tactic. When they go on mission, they can't EVER be alone, not even to go to the bathroom (the partner doesn't look, but is in the same room). This is to prevent them from "sinning", and snitching is heavily encouraged

    My MiL is one of the indigenous who was forcibly taken from her mother upon birth and grew up in a white home. She didn't even have the chance to meet her biological mother until she was an adult.

    Émile is not pronounced like Emily. the -e is silent, as in all french words or names ending on -e. the way you pronounced it, it would be a female name, but Émile Zola was a man
