It's strange because I feel we used to make shows where there was a clear line, more or less, between the protagonist and the villain. I also feel like the truly awful people were punished in the end. They weren't cool. More recently, though, I've noticed more shows where the villain is the protagonist. More specifically, the "loveable/sympathetic villains" are often pathological and dangerous. They're people you would never actually want to know. But if you put a Hollywood sheen on it and if the actor is pretty, funny or very commanding, we want to see them survive/ find love etc. Look at Walter White and the main character from killing Eve. People LOVED those characters. It's great entertainment, but I worry about the shift in lionizing psychopaths and sociopaths on huge shows with global reach. Especially if really young people are watching them uncritically.
This is such a good point especially with Walter. People LOVE Walter and i totally understand why the originally would but by the end of the show i was shocked just how many ppl considered him aspirational. He hurt people, it wasn’t for his family, it was for him!!
