Remote Life Alaska
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 12 ก.ค. 2022
Hello!
Welcome to our journey.
We have decided to take our small family on a big change. Moving from city life in Wisconsin where everything is given to you, to the off grid life in Alaska where everything takes time and lots of hard work. Our goal is to appreciate everything we have, and build a life we are proud of.
In only one years time we managed to deal with an unexpected amount of challenges where our grit and determination was tested. Within this first year we also learned we were expecting and welcomed our daughter into the family. If there is one thing we have learned so far it is to expect the unexpected. Let's see what happens next!

A Realistic Week of Meals - Food on the Homestead
Meals look different for us throughout the winter months. We make meals off of main staples we keep on hand with a lot less fresh fruits and veggies. We have a few handful of our favorites that we frequently rotate through to share with you all.
Our meals are simple and easy which works perfectly for us on busy days. We slowly try new foods and cooking techniques as we are definitely not chefs - but sometimes it is fun to try.

Sourdough - Our simple method to the popular bread
มุมมอง 11K16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
After years of being hesitant to start sourdough we finally did it. What better time than during a terrible winter where we want to hide inside all day. We fully understand there are many ways to do this! Here is our take with what works best for us. We also have our amazing yeast bread recipe that we certainly wont forget about. The more options the better in our minds. Our Mailing Address: PO...
Framing the Closet - Installing the bi-fold door we built
มุมมอง 14Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Another rainy day in Alaska means another day working inside the house. This time we chose to work on our closet and get the door hung that we built a couple weeks ago. We installed tongue and groove siding on the back inside wall and will finish the rest of the closet walls with drywall once summer hits and we can haul it to the property. Woodshed Siding - Covering the freezer and generator room
มุมมอง 24K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Alaska has been having some wild weather this January and we have been feeling cooped up hiding from it. This week we decided to head outside for some work on the woodshed. We put up some siding to cover the freezers and generators, as well as half of our storage area in the loft above. While we did not have enough lumber on hand to finish the job, Cody will be getting his cast off in a week an...
Entry Closet Doors - Our second attempt to build!
มุมมอง 17K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Last winter we made an attempt to build our closet doors. It did not go entirely as planned and while we liked how they looked overall they simply were not up to the standard we hoped. So this winter we are tackling the project with a simpler design. It is a whole new ball game when your building project starts with a tree. The amount of work and time spent on these doors forces you to apprecia...
A Winter Day in the Life - Off grid in remote Alaska
มุมมอง 43Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This is our typical day in the life during our winter season. The pace is a lot slower with the given sunlight hours and can vary based on the temperatures outside. Today it was very cold so we spent the majority of our time inside. Daily chores consist of firewood, laundry, dishes, and making sure the dog gets to run around with us. There is always a long list of bigger projects that we do our...

Cabin Wall Progress - Insulation, Wires, and Wallcovering
มุมมอง 20Kหลายเดือนก่อน
With an endless amount of work to be done, this week we shifted our focus back inside the cabin. We ran wires for the upstairs outlets, filled insulation gaps, and continued to install tongue and groove wallcovering. As always we wish we accomplished more this week but we are also pleased with any progress towards the completion of this house. With the holidays fast approaching we will be takin...
Splitting Firewood - Adding more to our woodshed
มุมมอง 26Kหลายเดือนก่อน
As we progress into our second winter in Alaska, the need for more firewood has not gone away. We have plenty of wood to make it through winter - it just needs to be cut into rounds and split in order to use it. Cody wants to be outside doing the work but he is under strict orders to stay inside and rest so that his hand can fully heal back to normal. This week we also got a surprise visit from...
Alaska Moose Harvest - A Thanksgiving surprise
มุมมอง 101K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
After being a part of the Alaska Roadkill List for almost one year we finally got the call! Thanksgiving night, in negative 18 degree F weather, we set out to pick up our first moose. With temperatures being so cold we rushed to process the moose as quickly as possible. We are very grateful for getting this moose. Our freezer is now full of many meals to last us until hunting season next year. ...
Cody's Hand Injury - Thankful for our community
มุมมอง 14K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here is the deal with Cody's hand injury. He had a small snow machine accident that resulted in his Scaphoid bone breaking in his wrist. We got him into surgery and he is now on the road to recovery. Secondly, we hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday. We appreciate everyone who watches our videos and is along for the ride with this crazy life of ours. Canning Beef Broth - Rendering beef Tallow
มุมมอง 14K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
A perfect winter day activity around the wood cook stove. The cold temperatures are the perfect time for slow cooking of broths and fats. Not everything happens perfectly, and we strive to show the good and the bad. Two jars broke this go around - very sad - but we will keep an eye and see if we can detect the reasoning. Either way there is a lot more canning and preserving in our future. Our M...
Water Tank Loft - Installing flooring and a winter refill
มุมมอง 18K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
For the first time we are able to fill our big water tank during the winter. Getting a well drilled is going to allow us to use more water at home and take less trips to town for hauling and laundromat services. While the tank was low enough on water to move around, this was our chance to also get the flooring installed. Hopes were to install flooring in our second loft as well but due to an in...
Tongue and Groove Wallcovering - Starting work inside the cabin
มุมมอง 27K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
We frequently change our minds on what project we are working on next, and putting up our interior wallcovering was a spur of the moment decision. We started about a month ago and ended up needing to take a few weeks break so the wood could acclimate to our cabin before continuing. Getting the walls covered may not help us save space, but visually it makes a huge difference. Being able to cover...

I can't find Remote Life Unscripted.
It might be because the channel is new and so small that it won’t come up in a regular search. You might have to filter the search to channels only.
Amazing progression you two! Truly an inspiration 😊
Always excited to see your next video!!
Lori, I found a cool hack for you if you use oil to grease a pan. Clean an empty catsup bottle, if you have one, and put oil in it. Great way to control how much you want to use
It good to see you both smiling and enjoying!!

Home cooked meals are the best. Great video.
I just found your channel. I love all things Alaska and homesteading! What an amazing life you are creating with your little family! Very blessed!
Sourdough makes a beautiful pizza base and sourdough rolls are delicious with a stew. Either way your starter is looking like it’s going to last for a good long while 😊.
Thanks Lori. I completed making my starter a week ago now and have since been trying out recipes. Tried this one of yours today and it's fab. I put mine in a small loaf tin and cooked it up in an instant pot. I don't have an oven. It turned out my best tasting loaf yet. I used white rye and wholemeal flours. Fabulous. I am also going to adopt your starter keeping method. Why faff eh? I will never win awards for the best "correct" looking loaf but I do not care. It's only my households opinion I need.
As long as you like it that is all that matters! I’m happy it worked out for you.
Can you post the recipe she showed on tablet I took a screenshot its to blurry to make out. Ty in advance.
250g water 150g starter 25g olive oil 500g flour 10f salt Mix and let sit 30-60 minutes Shape dough and let sit until it double in size 4-8 hours Bake covered at 375 for 30 minutes Uncover and bake until golden brown.

Bread looked great!
Lots of hard dedicated work. , but well worth it, you guys are great!
Great video, all your dishes looked delicious! The grouse meat was different for sure. Does it taste like chicken? Have a great week.
You could mix a little water on your tomato sauce to get all the sauce out for your lasagna.
Enjoyed your video. Also enjoyed the video on your unscripted channel. Why not just post those on this channel as vlogs or shorts?
I have been feeling the same way about the sourdough 'wagon'. Really wanted to, but always felt like it would be a big commitment. I'm gonna do it this summer... thanks for the post! We have just subscribed and invite you to check out our journey too (we bought a 62 acre island on a lake in BC). Do you need to put the little clamps back on the lid each time you put it back in the fridge?
That's what we do too!
Loved your video
Looks good I tried to make some but it was hard as a rock! Most people say stretch and knead but yours turned out perfectly without doing it! Love your channel ❤ just found it ! Beautiful family
Enjoyed your video on the new site "Remote Life Unscripted". Hope this means we'll get to see even more videos!
Loved the video
Great video Lori! I cooked like that everyday for 20 years while my kids were growing up. They loved goulash(MN)
I’ve never had acorn squash need to try, do you ever stuff it? Would be good
we use sprouts and micro greens for a fresh taste in winter. yogurt is very versatile, breakfast and sour cream, ect. You guys do great. it is a learning curve.
I’ve grown sprouts in the past but haven’t gotten back into it since our move yet. That would have been a great addition!
@@remotelifealaska we have had better luck with sprouts and we use them faster.
Why don’t you all keep seeds to grow your own acorn squash
We do keep seeds to grow our own food. We have a large tote full of seeds for the coming growing season and don’t have a need to keep more right now so a tasty snack it is.
now thats how you cook proper chips ,lovely colour and crispy, i always cook mine in lard and in the chip pan xx
It all looked so good, Lori. Rowan is just too cute! Thank you for sharing. I enjoy your videos.
Ok. Rowan(not sure of spelling) is my absolute favorite..lol
you guys. should cook more on your wood stove
In the winter we usually use the wood stove (and we love it!), however right now we are in the middle of a project inside the house so there is more space around the propane stove as well as it usually cooks our food a bit quicker and more consistently while we may be distracted. We’ve considered showing wood stove cooking only in a future video.
Lori put a toothpick in your mouth while chopping onions. You will not be crying. I learned this a long time ago. I really enjoyed watching the meal preps for daily use 👏👏👏👏👏. Baby girl sure is growing fast
Great video Lori, that lasagna dish looked soooo good ! I've never had moose , so I'll take your word on that !! hahah. Rowan is adorable !
You all are doing some good eatin'!
Great video
Been watching from the beginning, great channel!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👋

Lemon Balm makes a great tea. It also helps lower a fever and helps relieve stomach cramps.
I really like your show. Y’all do a lot of canning & butchering of animals so there is sharp knives. Glass jars that could cut her. That little girl could get to. She goes to be crawling if not all really. For the safety baby girl and gets bigger Y’all could put like half wall on the side of the kitchen where the stairs go up to the bedroom to keep the sweet ❤baby girl out of the kitchen while you’re cooking. The other side you can put a gate so you can go in and out. I know how it is when your cooking. But when your canning she doesn’t need to any where near the kitchen. Even though I know you’re very wonderful caring parents & but a accidents can happen in a matter of minutes and you live so far out. She will learn to play with herself maybe get her some learning toys like the being number & abc blocks or toys to start teaching her schooling even though she’s young is never to young
Love love love ❤️ ❤
Food looked delicious x x and a very cute baby x x ❤
You could build a green house to plant stuff like turn ups radishes beets carrots squash cucumbers zucchini peppers tomatoes things like that in the greenhouse that take warm hot weather that you have you can stay early & that needs a little bet of a longer growing season also potato Broccoli cauliflower
Do you save seeds out of veg to plant like the Acorn squash our any kind of squash or Zucchini that can be saved over the two months or canned
I have saved seeds in the past, we have plenty of seeds for our coming garden season though so the tasty snack is preferred.
Nice job on the meal preps. They all looked delicious. Love your channel 🥰
Can you make a video of youre grocery haul😊
We just did a big Costco haul right before winter, we might do another shopping trip showing a local grocery that we make more frequently.
I loved this video - seeing what a weekly meal looks like. So pleased to see Rowan eating the same meals as yourselves. She’s such a happy baby ❤️Healthy, simple meals. We got spoilt this week - 2 videos. Thanks for sharing. 🇦🇺 fan
10:50 what is that against the wall? Can't decide if it's a branchy burl or a burly branch, or if I'm just seeing things😵💫 Anywho... I just love sticks (and stones)🤩😆
It’s a spruce branch with a burls in it. Not sure what we will use it for yet.
@@remotelifealaska Excellent! If you have willows, maybe check them for diamonds🤩
Onions make me cry too. Great video, enjoyed this a lot 😁❤️
Lori, just a quick easy recipe you might like for salmon, put in a frying pay with a little oil, and put salmon skin side down, place slices on butter on top of each filet, then sprinkle dry Italian salad dressing mix over it pretty liberal, let it cook until you see it's only about 1/4 inch from being cooked through, flip each filet over into the yummy butter sauce that has melted off and let it cook only about 3 minutes to finish it off and flip it back over, and serve. Skin is actually pretty good as it's gotten crispy during the frying. But if you don't like it, it comes off very easy. Was nice getting two video's this week. Thanks for taking us along on your week of meals.
I’ve been thinking about trying to do a crispy skin version of salmon - usually we peel it off and feed it to the dog. I’ll have to try your recipe and see how we like it. Anything with butter is usually good!
@remotelifealaska I hope you like it! I can't believe how big the baby girl is getting. Rowen is so beautiful.
