An AMERICAN COLONIA::: The Battle Over Colony Ridge
Just 8 miles north of the manicured lawns of Lake Houston is a neighborhood a world away. A community defined by minimal infrastructure, a distinct lack of building codes and deed restrictions, a place where you can build, live, and open a business in just about whatever you want. This may not be what you picture when you think of the Houston suburbs, but it’s been estimated 50,000 people live here, and it’s one of the fastest growing communities in the state. In just over ten years a Texas developer has turned tens of thousands of acres of timber farm into a massive and controversial exurb, sprawling out for miles into the East Texas forest. But there is more to the story of colony ridge than that. A story that would involve a pro boxer turned real estate developer, a legendary investigative journalist, a political football catching national attention, and thousands of residents caught in the crossfire. This is the story of Colony Ridge.

POISONED PICHER - Everything That Remains
มุมมอง 5944 หลายเดือนก่อน
Once a booming mining town, Picher was long in decline after mining ceased, before being slowly poisoned in a decades-long environmental catastrophe. It was designated as an EPA superfund site in 1983 with the goal of remediating the town’s toxicity, but in the 1990s they deemed the entire town uninhabitable, and began buying the residents out of their land. If Picher had not been dealt enough ...

Beyond the glitz and glamor of the strip, A half mile east of old downtown is a cluster of abandoned motels essentially frozen in time. They had names like the Star View and the Lucky, one story themed buildings wrapped around parking lots and swimming pools, their neon signs harkening back to a mid century vegas boom. It’s been 80 years since the first motels appeared on East Fremont Street, a...
BATTLE WON, Fight to Save the Luther Hotel Continues

Almost a year ago, I made a video about the Luther Hotel, a historic 120 year old seaside hotel in the small texas town of palacios that was about to be torn down, an unfortunate but not uncommon outcome for buildings like this. Just when the hotel was on the brink of demolition, and crews had begun cleaning out the interior, a dedicated cohort of preservationists teamed up to imagine a differe...
Emancipation, Education, & Abandoned Buildings - The Mary Allen Seminary

On a hill in the north end of Crockett, Texas, are the crumbling remains of a grand, seemingly out of place structure. The four story second empire building towers over the surrounding landscape, and although it’s been abandoned for fifty years now, when it was conceived it was a revolutionary institution for the state of Texas. This is the Mary Allen Seminary, and in 1886 it became the first c...

NYC's HIDDEN FAIRYLAND: Forest Hills, Queens

Ghosts of American Steel [PA] [Carrie Furnace] [Abandoned]

Looming over the Monongahela River Southeast of Pittsburgh is an awe inspiring relic of a bygone era in the city’s life. It’s been 45 years since the final piece of iron left the Carrie Furnace, and these rusted husks are nearly all that remains of what was once the largest steel mill in the world, and a critical piece of the region’s former industrial might. Why DALLAS Was Almost a PORT | [TX]

Over 200 miles inland, Dallas, Texas is an unlikely port city. Nonetheless, for a hundred years of the city’s history, on and off efforts to make the Trinity River navigable resulted in what is today six abandoned dams and locks intended to be part of a network leading from Dallas to Trinity Bay. Historic, Abandoned Luther Hotel TO BE DEMOLISHED

Built in 1903, the Luther Hotel in Palacios, Texas is a historic seaside escape fronting the town's shoreline. This wood clad three story building dates back to the establishment of the settlement as a railroad and resort town in the early 1900s, and has been a fixture of the city’s waterscape ever since. after the katy boondoggle, i thought i had seen the worse of wasteful DOT spending but this new 45 project takes the cake of stupidity.
Developers, big monied interests, and the DINKS just south and west of the Pierce Elevated will be the big winners in this plan. Inner City families (remember them?) will continue to be pushed out to the suburbs.
Midway is now home to the Laysan Albatross, including its most famous resident, Wisdom. Wisdom was born a few years after WWII and was first banded in 1956. At 74 years old, she is now known as the world's oldest bird and has survived through decades of pollution and climate change.
This project is exactly what the city needs. Bravo!
Merry Xmas Scott. Looking forward to your videos in 2025. Great site.
Thank you!
Are you Luke from modern family?
hahaha no
Wonderful, now we won’t have the lemmings clogging the streets, staring at the gaudy non-art, such as the block of Leeland/St. Emanuel. I’m amazed at what people consider art.
I hope when they start the deportation, they start here.
I used to live near the area! I remember visiting before they put up the fence to keep you out... It was so eerie and I rarely get creeped out by that stuff. But a completely empty and evacuated town will give you the creeps when you stroll through
This story is a whitewash of the communities; they are full of illegals, it is Mexico inside of Texas. The snob talking in the video looks down on people living poor and like many snobs in Texas he despises the homes of the poor. I have no problem with the homes in the subdivision, but I have a huge problem with all the illegals living there. It was published in one Texas newspaper that Governor Abbot receives $800,000 per year from the promoters of this area. It also said the people promoting the area is not some boxer but the Mexican cartels.
👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
I encourage everyone who reads this to start framing ANY youtube video that you view with one question: were we a freer, stronger people then? Or now? Because even if we chose the cowardly way-or the meandering path of the dullard -we owe something to those we brought into this world. The age old outdoors maxim: ALWAYS LEAVE THE CAMPSITE CLEANER THAN YOU FOUND IT
The biggest problem is White people don't want Public Transit especially Light Rail Transit near their neighborhood let alone in them u seen where the Light Rail goes nowhere near
Man, you screwed up from the beginning by calling it “a highway widening plan” when it’s actually a “highway REMOVAL” plan. This plan is all about the removal of the Pierce Elevated portion of I-45, come on now man!!
Okay y’all, this particular project has….the POTENTIAL ….to really alter the fabric of the eastern portion of our City of Houston in a REALLY good way. It really does. …..BUT…… It’s gonna take soooo gaddamn long and be soooo gaddamn disruptive to actually accomplish, that it’s gonna be ridiculous, and there will definitely be doubts spawned about whether or not it’s even worth it. And this is understandable. Right? NOW, to the business at hand::::::: The park to be on top of this highway, if done “right” has the possibility to really make this a complete city-game changer. Again, if it is done ➡️➡️RIGHT‼️⬅️⬅️ Houston has a very valid and long history of doing things the functional, but CHEAPEST way. 🤦♂️-Buildings (are just boxes), roads (plain, no palm trees, shrubs or other trees planted to “pretty” it up, or stone features, nothing etc), parks(just basic plots of grass, no decorative gates or statues or big artwork), monuments and all. These things are all cheap as possible, visually unattractive, BUT they’re all functional. The “park” Houston eventually places on top will be an easy comparison to what Dallas has already done. We shalt ALL see for sure if what I’m saying is a hundred percent true or if we’re dealing with a whole new City of Houston. I mean, they all do indeed get the intended job done right, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯? 🤦♂️🙄 Just really look around and then compare what you see here in Houston to other “MAJOR” cities and you will see a crystal-clear difference. With Houston being on the downside. Just take a really GOOD LOOK AND COMPARE. 🤦♂️ I wish with everything in me, that that will NOT be the case here. Now is really NOT the time nor ESPECIALLY the place to pull that cheap, but functional, ahh dumb stunt. Please, oh please 🙏 don’t do this, Houston. Actually do actually LOOKS GOOD and that FUNCTIONS WELL AND actually LOOKS GOOD and this time 🙏. Dallas even though it’s number THREE city in Texas, has the far larger reputation and popularity vs Houston. Even in skylines people say they prefer Dallas even though Houston’s is 4X bigger AND it’s much taller. And Austin is soon to pass us up in both y’all! Look it up!! Dallas just LOOKS better as a city because they actually TRY to. Houston just doesn’t even try. Basic Betty. And let’s not even compare the light rail systems 🤦♂️, embarrassing to say the least. Whew. I just hope and pray that Houston at least TRIES to get this one not only right, but make it GOOD!! Houston has FLAVOR and natural culture that Austin and Dallas WISH they had. They’re both bland CULTURALLY and that’s where Houston wins and what makes it special it just doesn’t use it to its full potential. PLEASE get this one right HOUSTON. PLEASE 🙏
i have been inside this place. it really did not seem that bad, my wife and I did notice a lack of street lights& several round abouts. infact I even leaned into aquiring some land in it. ...umtill I learned about the torential rains & flooding. so here i am looking into more on houston terrenos & the flooding
It seems like if you buy a lot but don't finance/buy through them it is not as bad. The flooding is worth looking in to though!
@ScottDaileyTH-cam thank you for making this Informative video. I served In the military, so the whole building you Own home in. Some cheap land seemed good. I have& am learning alot. We will be looking elsewhere to protect our investment.
Trey Harris my cousin has donated millions to Governor Greg Abbots campaign fund as well as most all local amd state elected officials to keep them from giving them any "trouble" ...
The developers Trey and John Harris in pics are my cousins. Robin Lane my brother and Kevin Harris my cousin are also owners are part owners too. I have been "banned" at family events for posting my openly not supporting my family targeting illegals who can't get loans in America. John took over ... Trey getting a few DWI''s in the last year. My brother Robin told me they target illegals....
This it is complete BS! Money grab and waste of time and a major traffic nightmare!
I could spend all day reading peoples comments about their time on midway atoll. I know we have all this great technology now, right at our fingertips, but I would’ve loved to been alive back then and share similar experiences.
It will help commuters in North Houston (Huntsville) get to their jobs in South Houston (Dickinson). The city center is just flyover country now and a place to receive all the floodwater runoff from the new developments surrounding it.
I stayed in that hotel when it was a Holiday Inn. It was very nice.
i want one....
I used to frequent St. Emanuel almost daily when I worked downtown. I’m really disappointed to hear of this regressive plan. Houston city leadership is so self-destructive. It’s almost as if they don’t want people living and investing into the area.
TXDOT is very powerful and pro suburbia
This is actually about improving downtown and creating more connectivity and space. i feel many of you are missing the entire point of this project.
That's where the old Bordon Dairy Building used to be. A below grade freeway next to a bayou that floods the whole downtown. What could go wrong? Some developer wants the land that I-45 sits on.
The highway is already below grade is it not??
This is the East End. Not East Houston
Born in Port Arthur at the historic St. Mary's hospital, a beautiful building, now torn down like so many of the others.

I live here now, I love it.
I spent my child hood and teen yrz at the north west mall those were Good times my mom sister grand parents or aunt or cousins . Thanks to all for a great family history . And the north west mall for giving us the good times I miss all of it.
That's the BEST condition I've ever seen that place in....
The “battle” just like Pearl Harbor was fake.
Very interesting video Scott. Never been to Texas myself so I find your site informative. Great work.
Thank you! It's a fascinating place.
Got in this building in my urban exploring days back in 2018. This building and the Old Houston Post on Polk were some my most memorable explores. Amazing views of south downtown including the old Enron tower. The security back then was a joke. Multiple points of access. The building is very dangerous though lots of Random holes in the floor dropping multiple floors. I could tell other people were in the building I could hear them talking and screaming. Since then they beefed up security, added cameras, buffed all the graffiti and now I’ve even noticed they are removing all those walls in the center.
I watch a Farm channel that Lives on Plum Grove Road. It’s land that has been in the family since way back in the Wars. Passed down from Father, To Son, over and over. He has spoken on this multiple times. He did end up purchasing land outside of there as it is now Flooding every time it rains. His Parents live there & a couple of his siblings, along with Niece & Nephews. Ima Survivor Sanctuary, Longhorn Lester’s & Hanging With PawPaw is the 3 channels. I Pray something is done with all this. 🙏🏼♥️
I know this place from Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. I wish I could visit this place in real life.
Americans don’t care about pubic transport
That street it's on Ashford point is a crazy street as well
The bottom line is no one likes it because some stupid city government can't tax them and put law enforcement in there to pull them over for speeding and hassle everybody leave these people alone That's what's wrong with America today everywhere you move you got to eat your way You've got this you've got that leave these people alone
You're very confused and mislead..... You obviously don't live next to this trash....
So I live around the corner from this place 10 years it was very nice years ago they are building smaller orbs on this property today 2024. I'm curious to see what they will be??
@@allysonperry1740 keep us updated! I haven’t been by in a while!
Thanks for the great description. I see from the comments that Colony Ridge has some good and some bad. I appreciate you providing the history that explains why it is like that.
Wow! Was not expecting this rabbit hole when clicking on this video. Very insightful. Keep up the good work, Scott!
Voted there yesterday!!!
Forest Hills and Forest Hills Gardens are two totally different creatures for sure. Very pretty. Very strict rules to keep it that way. The Gardens also have original street lamp type things to keep the vibe going, which are cool looking. But it means some of those paths can get pretty dark at night if you're walking through there at 11 at night to get home, which can be almost a mile from Continental Ave if your house is one of the ones closer to Metropolitan Ave.
The ilegal mexicans cut every tree down, not one on a lot, so they can recreate the desert they csme from.
If you go to that area everything is in Spanish. You feel like you are in Mexico. It is basically a haven for illegal aliens. And the population has exploded.
The heart of cancer alley!😢😢😢
