Emmanuel Nunez is not your typical Houstonian. In a city where the average commuter drives nearly an hour a day, he almost never gets in his car. He does nearly all of his travel by bike and public transit, giving him a relationship with the city and his close-in neighborhood very different from most commuters. Just over 10 years ago he identified two missing links in Houston’s growing bicycle infrastructure. He decided to push for the construction of two bike bridges in the Heights, and ended up becoming an advocate for Houston’s urban infrastructure at large. Let’s find out how he ended up here and the future he envisions for one of Houston’s most iconic neighborhoods.

I lived in Spring Branch 20 years ago, I'm glad to see stuff like this because I always wished Houston had more car alternatives.

I made that trail with my buddies on our Dirtbikes. 😂😂 We called it “The flat track” for many years and rode countless loops around that flood control area before all those apartments were built and people started walking their dogs back there. The shot at 2:46 was all created by our Dirtbikes around 2013. Now the local dog walkers yell at us for riding our Dirtbikes back there.

The bridges are being put in good places to expand usage, but I think he made the best point when speaking about secure bike parking. To get more cars off the road, we need to reduce bike theft. Good places to lock them up would be nice, but having cops who respond to thefts where there’s a working tracker would seem to be a good idea as well. Seriously, it should be a no brainer way to catch actual thieves and deter crime.

I often think other modes of transport are forgotten. I drive but I love riding my electric scooter, and not only is it forgotten and discouraged, it is becoming unwelcome by many officials. Problems created by scooters and more easily be solved with education and minor inclusion efforts. Here isn Houston, I have to drive but I'd love it if bike, rail and scooter considerations were also part of the over all growth and improvement plans. I'm not much of a bus fan.
Except very few days, taking a bike for transportation is just not possible due to the weather. Things are more casual now, but it is still unacceptable to show up drenched in perspiration.
So he's adding bike routes in the heights? That's not Houston. Thats basically one extremely small area.
If we want to make Houston bike friendly there needs to be trails all the way out to Katy from downtown.

So was was he one of the folks that influenced the bike route on 11th street? Which made that street heavily congested for vehicles due to that. I'm all for a dedicated bike route as long as it doesn't make vehicle traffic worse as the after affect.
The heights trails get a good amount of traffic. They get used. One reason for that is high density. A trail from Katy to Downtown will cost millions, and will likely only be used by a few hardcore cyclists. It’s not going to get many walkers either. OTOH, one that connects shopping, schools, jobs, and homes that would be reasonably used to walk or ride is worthwhile.
If you want a trail or bike lane, first identify a place where one would get a lot of use. Then, talk to the organizations that work on issues in that area of town to get it funded. If it gets a lot of use, then you can more easily get it expanded. Then, it’s an easier matter to connect different local networks in a way that would get you across town with or without a bus or rail connection.
What we do not need, which the city even put in the heights to much disapproval, is more lanes that are not going to be used. It’s just not true that if you build it, they will come.
