E35 Saving My 100 y/o Windows l Bedroom Reno Pt4
The window sashes in the bedroom looked terrible and hadn't been properly maintained for decades. Join me as I try to save them so they can last 100 more years.
To be able for the linseed oil paint to work properly I needed to remove all old acrylic paint. I succesfully restore most of the original hardware and repair one window sash that needed some extra attention.
Since renovating these windows I have learnt that I should oil the rebates before shellack. You never stop learning ;-)

I made all of the rookie mistakes when painting with lime paint. In the end, it all work out fine, I just needed to redo it a couple of times. E27 Hallway Transformation pt 1

The prep work is ending and we can start seeing some results here. First up is the ceiling of the hallway. I removed the old lime plaster that was all cracked up and needed a lot of repairing. I decided to take it down, but since I didn't feel comfortable enough to redo the lime plaster in the ceiling I used leftover drywall I had in the attic. I did two layers as a fire hazard prevention. Hi Moaboa. I am excited to come across your window restoration. I too am contemplating restoring my old windows. The paint in my windows has lead in it. That makes me afraid to do the stripping myself. Did you have to deal with lead paint on your windows? Also, that infrared paint remover looks like it works well. Would you recommend it to others that want to strip old woodwork? Thanks and keep up the good work.

    • @old_school_moaboa
      @old_school_moaboa 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No I didn't have led. However the speedheater is perfect for it because the actual stripping is safe also when dealing with led. They have had independent researchers to test the fumes and it's perfectly safe to scrape the paint off without protection. The study is on their website www.speedheater.com. the price for one is hefty but considering the cost of properly restoring windows bh a professional, then it's worth it many times over. If you are only doing windows i would recommend the cobra or the slim variant. Also you have to follow @gantelius_fonsterhantverk on instagram for tips. He is local to me but he is a global influencer when it comes to window restoration. Such skill and expertise.

    Hi, We tried the såpning method according to your instructions as have heard that the scrubbing of the traditional såpskura method can break the soft fibres in pine. However, after six washes some parts of our floor look almost like they did after sanding. Should we have added water to the soap before brushing it on? Any advice greatly appreciated!

      Well I have only done my own floors so that's my only experience. But some small parts of my floor remained the same and on my floor my mistake was that I left some remains of the old varnish. Because the floor were so uneven it was hard to remove 100 %. Also there are some uneveness because parts of the floor had been covered up for decades. White paint of that age (1920s) often contains lead. Have you checked for it ? And use mask ?

    • @old_school_moaboa
      @old_school_moaboa 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In Sweden it's been forbidden to use indoors since the 19th Century so about 150 years. Either way these windows only seem to have acrylic paint on them today. It's not that common to test for lead here I guess, if your house is only 100 year old like mine because it's unlikely it contains lead. So no I didn't test and, knock wood, I am fine. If there was lead I would be very sick by now 🤢 also the speedheater I use is great for removing paint safely. But I should be better when sanding to use a mask, I once got m sinusitis when sanding a floor with a faulty dust mask

    I thought you were going to move the driveway to the other side?

      Yes in the future, but before that I probably need to build a new garage and a permit from the municipality to move the entrance. Until then I needed to clean up this one as it was so muddy in bad weather.

    Thank for sharing your project with the world! I can imagine how hard it is to do all this by yourself. And on the other hand I can see benefits for such an approach also: not have disagreements can be one of them. I have such respect for your work and how you handle it all. Much Love and Many Blessings!

      Oh yes, I was quite annoyed at my ex for having opinions about our home (well aware he was entitled to these). We had so different styles that we agreed on dividing the decoration choices to one level for each of us, He had free hands in the basement and I on the first floor and then we had to compromize on the 2nd floor :-)

      Thank you :-) I have never in my life been accused of attention to detail, I guess this is the only part of my life where I have that kind of focus. It's the opposite at work for example :-) There I rush more and try to apply "good enough" to get more done
