    That scrolling speed is great. Reminds me a bit of Supercars for Amiga. I bought my Amiga 500 in 1991 after two years of delivering newspapers. I was tired of sharing our 64 with my brother and sisters, so I wanted my own. In 1996 I bought my first PC, but the Amiga was stiil in use after that. I still have it and still use it from time to time.

      This scroll is much better than scroll in Amiga's Super Cars.

      Yeah it's pretty similar but much faster than supercars. I did a review of Super Cars II on the channel, love that game. Also search for 'Indy Heat'... another great game also on the channel. All on the racing games playlist - some greats there 😇🕹👍🏁🏁

    Sadly, by 1992 I'd not only left the C64 behind, I'd even left my Amiga 500 behind and bought my first PC (386DX-40Mhz, 4mb RAM 105mb HDD) the joys of Wing Commander, Wolfenstein 3D and especially Star Control II were not to be denied! This looks like a solid little racer and reminds me in many ways of The Last V8, even in it's soundtrack! Time to bust it out on VICE and see how it handles. Thanks Cheeky!

    This looks like a fun little game. By this time, I had switched over to the PC I needed for school, so I wasn't collecting as many C64 games at the time. This reminds me a bit of Racing Destruction Set... but faster and without the ramps and weapons.

      It still holds up as a great game too, pretty challenging and super 'slick'.. ad the title suggests! It actually lives up to its name... which was unusual for a codemasters boast on their cassette inlays! 😁🕹👍🏁🏁

    I missed out on some of the best C64 games that came out towards the end of it's commercial life since I owned an Amiga by then, this was when some programmers had learnt to squeeze every last drop out of the now aging hardware to make C64 games look as much 16 bit as possible despite the limitations, sometimes they failed miserably, other times the games were ground breaking. Love how Codemasters put "New Release" on the box.

    • @CheekyCommodoreGamer
      @CheekyCommodoreGamer  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Codemasters definitely had some 'forward thinkers' in their marketing team... but to plaster 'New Release' on every single game probably wouldnt be allowed now haha. Maybe a removable sticker on the front... but they hard-printed it directly onto the inlay, so even though this game is 32 years old it's still a new release for those who see it for the first time haha 😇🕹️👌

      @CheekyCommodoreGamer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      They're easy to pick up and play aren't they. I particularly enjoyed the single screen top down racers as I could always see what turns were coming next... but in this game, the cornering was something you'd need to learn as part of trial and error, which was a good replayability factor 😇🕹️👌

  • @cybermodo
    @cybermodo หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    At that point my C64 was no more, unfortunately. I would've liked this one, I love top-down racers. I am an avid Micro Machines fan, and this one supposed to be compensation for not having MM on C64. Seems to me that some tweaking of driving mechanics into Rally Speedway kind of thing - would've made it truly amazing. Having cool visuals of former, and smooth driving in later - winning combo. And perhaps adding some manager aspects, like tweaking cars, tires, engines. Some oil marks and other physical obstacles on the road, pitstops,... yap, I know, this was made to be clean little racer. But game engine is so good that we really want some next CarWars game - yes, put canons and rocket launchers there. Kids love that!

    • @CheekyCommodoreGamer
      @CheekyCommodoreGamer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ivan 'Ironman' Stewarts Super Off-Road was another game I loved for the Commodore 64, because you could upgrade your vehicles after each race - but the ability to swap cars was a nice touch with this game and kept the challenges fresh 😇🕹️👌

      It's a bit of a steep learning curve judging how much joystick to push for the cornering. But after 2 or 3 goes it becomes muscle memory and then the fun starts 😇🕹👍🏁

    Now we're talking. Possibly the last game I bought (or it could have been creatures 2) on the c64 before moving to an A600. Happy days in the twilight of the c64 waiting on very few new games and hoping the covertapes on the few surviving (and thinning) magazines had something of interest.

    • @CheekyCommodoreGamer
      @CheekyCommodoreGamer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some good memories from the latter days of the C64. At this stage I had boxes upon boxes of games... felt a shame to move to the Amiga and start my collection all again. But little did I know just how awesome the continuation of the journey was to become! 😇🕹👍💾🖱

      It's great in 2 player mode too even though scoring against your opponent happens very frequently. But when you get an evenly matched 2nd player the races can become intense! A shame I had nobody to play with for the video to showcase this in better detail 😇🕹👍🏁

    As far as I know, this game was never released for Amiga (or PC etc ...) . Reason being that 2D top down games were becoming obsolete. Year before Microprose released their Formula One Grand Prix. This title run a bit sluggish on regular Amiga 500, but compared to it, Slicks look like game for children. Thus Codemasters released this only on already waning C-64, to grab some more cash but it must be said that this game was sold at discount from the start.

      I had loads of these top down games on the Amiga. Then it sort of switched to a slightly isometric angle and thats where the graphical style really ramped up, with games like 'Skidmarks' and Team17's 'ATR Racing'. I love both of those games too by the way... definitely cover those someday 😇🕹️👌

    I never had this. It looks like a decently made game. Unfortunately, I've never liked top-video racing games. Even with games like Nitro on the Amiga, I always found them more frustrating than fun. While the steering is logical, when the car is facing in any direction other than up the screen, it seems like the controls are changed. The car is pointing down the screen and I want to go toward the right, which means I have to steer left. That's just counter-intuitive to me.

    • @CheekyCommodoreGamer
      @CheekyCommodoreGamer  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nooo 'You need to keep your eye out for arrows on the track which sometimes help you know which turn is coming next' Slicks is joystick controlled only I'm afraid...
